Around The Grounds - Round 13

Featured Replies

The quickest way to fix the ducking and staging is to charge the offending players using video evidence ... asking the umpires to sort it all out when they've already got an impossible job to do is unrealistic.

The AFL needs to act but they won't (at least not for now) ... they are poor custodians when being good custodians is their basic task/job.  If there isn't a dollar in it for them, they either won't act or are super-slow to act.

The latest controversy could easily be viewed as helping to maintain high interest (from the AFL's point of view) ... they'll act when these sort of things effects the viewer numbers (eg the rotations and how the high rotations led to numerous stoppages & congestion)

Can some explain the free to air fixture for this week?

Is it so 7 can show five games the next two weeks making 12 over 3 weeks to average 4? Or something else...?

Brad Scott complaining about the terrible standard of umpiring.

Sicily modeling his game on Ducker Thomas.

Hawks just continue getting away with it.

Cyril's throws, blocking the man standing on the mark, creeping over the mark, plays on all favour Hawks.

Take away their skill at cheating and blowing the umps and they are nothing special.

Clarkson and Mitchell have piggish faces on their short stupid bodies. They speak through their noses and have bogan monotones.

Strike them down with thunder , Thor, and end them.

I hate  Smiley Mitchell more than  No mates Harvey

I think I just hate short ,skillful footballers who need a punch in the head.

I want these guys targeted with EXTREME PREJUDICE.

Sicily is my newest object of hatred-I am the boot of Italy and he is the Shyte on the end.

I think I just woke up hating short men-they are nearly all detestable.

Put them in a Hawks/North jumper and it compounds.

Sicily was my first named Biffen in my (admittedly watered down to suit the masses) punchable players list.

An insightful rant.

Could not agree more. In fact was going to post the same thing.

In fact they alresdy have the mechanism in the staging/diving report the mrp have as an option. I know it is never used and has not resulted in any suspensions but the threat as being found guilty of being a cheat seems yo have addressed the issue

Re the last 'incident' ... neither the crowd, commentators nor the viewers were sure if the North player had been tackled high or not.  The commentators needed the replay facility for confirmation.

So what possible chance do the umpires have? ... zero chance if we're looking for consistent outcomes.  The sport doesn't have a replay facility for these types of incidents (hundreds of times per game) so we either put up with this sort of thing getting completely out of control or we try and knock it on the head.

The umpires could start pinging players for staging/ducking but they'll miss plenty because it's another grey area of the sport that can never have consistent outcomes.  The better way is to charge players retrospectively and rub them out.

Just being reported for ducking may have a shaming effect on a player. Will be hard to live down the jibes and ridicule.

Two teams with 'elite' duckers. Last night was a duck off (Thomas, Harvey, the bloke in the final seconds who looked like Lee Harvey Oswald had nailed him from the stands v Sicily, Poppy, Gunston) to see who plays Geelong (Selwood, Motlop) in the final.

Good.

They ruin the whole code of football.

Name them,Shame them. Ban them

I've said before. Use video after games, give a warning, then a $1000 fine, then. $5000 fine, then if a fourth time suspend them.

They won't though Biffen. There was a clear case last night where Sicily initiated above shoulder contact. It was blatant and opportunistic and ultimately changed the course of the game. He was then awarded BOG.

I have no doubt that the umpire knew what he did but did not have the courage of his convictions to call it. And yet they now make ludicrous deliberate out of bounce calls.

But this can be stamped out. Blatant stage should equal automatic 50 metre penalty and put on report. Problem solved.

And the call for the tackler to get low in the tackle doesn't hold water because these dishonest footballers initiate the contact with their heads.

Ha Ha Brad Scott and Nth have backed away from the umpire comments about Thomas. Apparently an official told Scott but has since retracted. I would expect Brad to get a big fine.

But it must have been the runner because what other official could have said they heard it on the ground?

Anyone who is looking stupid now?

Thomas has been getting academy awards for years. So the League have finally noticed.

All players who stage for frees should be fined $10,000 and put on report.

Lindsay Thomas should retire now

his career is over

he will be a liability in September when it heats up...

This, in my opinion, is far worse than what James Hird said on the Footy Show back in '04 about Scott McLaren.  Attacks the umpires' integrity and spreads a complete lie.

A fine and an apology is not enough- he needs to serve weeks.

Oh dear Scotty, you really shouldn't start slandering umpires with untrue statements right before your vanilla team of geriatrics starts playing teams in the top 8.

How delicious to see them being found out. They'll struggle to stay in the 8 if this keeps up, much less top 4.

I don't mind him, but can go missing....

It's inmy early in his career and he has Waite and the P dish to fit in next too. Just like the way he goes about it with no fuss.

  • PREVIEW: Carlton

Good evening, Demon fans and welcome back to the Demonland Podcast ... it’s time to discuss this week’s game against the Blues. Will the Demons celebrate Clayton Oliver’s 200th game with a victory? We have a number of callers waiting on line … Leopold Bloom: Carlton and Melbourne are both out of finals contention with six wins and eleven losses, and are undoubtedly the two most underwhelming and disappointing teams of 2025. Both had high expectations at the start of participating and advancing deep into the finals, but instead, they have consistently underperformed and disappointed themselves and their supporters throughout the year. However, I am inclined to give the Demons the benefit of the doubt, as they have made some progress in addressing their issues after a disastrous start. In contrast, the Blues are struggling across the board and do not appear to be making any notable improvements. They are regressing, and a significant loss is looming on Saturday night. Max Gawn in the ruck will be huge and the Demon midfield have a point to prove after lowering their colours in so many close calls.
