POST MATCH DISCUSSION - Round 12

Too many handballs, especially 1-2 meter handballs.

Spread was good today, lots of good attack at the footy.

if Petracca can fix his goal kicking he will be a star.

haven't beaten them twince in a season since 88 - when, funnily enough, we beat them three times in a season of football!

i was super happy with the way it all played out today.

we started like a house on fire, couldn't put it on the board, they got momentum for ten minutes, it evened out for the last quarter, and from the push-and-shove onwards we were absolutely dominant. it was so good to watch.

i thought conditions were really tough out there - super swirly wind.

gawn is a colossus. if he's not better than goldstein, he's close.

vince and jones wasted possession early on but settled into their groove, tyson and viney were excellent, i thought kennedy was really quiet early but as the game moved on he started bobbing up everywhere - had more marks than any other player on the ground. he just kept running.

probably my biggest disappointment was the crowd - i had hoped it might approach 70k - we fell 10k short. there was 65k there last time we played them, when it was their home ground i think?

No not 65k last time, it was 47,558 in the round 4 Collingwood home game. 65k+ today would have been good, but it was largely the Collingwood supporters who didn't turn up today - I think a number of them had already put their cue in the rack for this season.

I am informed that we have not beaten the Pies twice in the same season for 28 years.

The Single malt taste very good tonight.

Well you'd also be pleased that we have beaten them 3 times in the past 18 games!!

Vince must wish he could play Collingwood every week.

They should consider a name change to Bernie's B! tch FC.

Bernie's Bunnies. They sure played like them today.

I read that as witts is playing and im going to have a big day, meaning he really is no good. Which he wasnt in the end. Ok so he did mean it the right way.

By the way How good was that mark Hogan took in front of Howe. Loved it. I reckon Howe thought he had the sit. By the way Howe are u enjoying your new club where you are losing and your coach is under constant scrutiny. Bet you thought you would be relieved of that.

Well, yes, he is enjoying it at Magpie land. They have a defined roll for him in their forward line don't you know? Just wait until he gets down there, see him dominate.

No argument from me Deever. Watching from the bleeches can often dent your perspective of what has actually happened especially when you're down one of the field and can't see properly until the change of ends. Even then i wonder if i see things as well as i used to! They were both very serviceable albeit some ugly foot passes from Tmac may have put a dent in some of his run & carry efforts. The effort was def there from both though.

The last time Melbourne won QB, I started school. So long ago.

First quarter aside, it was brilliant watching Melbourne crush the Filth, the pressure around the ball was immense. Also got after game selfies with Omac and Dawes to round out a mighty fine day.

That is a good day Left. Nice change hearing these positive stories after such bleak times a year or 2 back.

Not sure if it's been specifically mentioned, but how good was Petracca's goal in the second term?  The pick up, spin, push off and then goal was sublime.  His sure hands at both ground level and in the air, as well as his explosiveness and ability to quickly change direction in a pack make him such an exciting prospect.  Really looking forward to his second half of the year.

And just quietly, I'm confident we can push the Swans all the way this Sunday as well.  With a few players going down and their confidence taking a hit they are ripe for the picking.  Could it be our turning point heading into the bye?

Collingwood are utter slop.

Does that mean they slurp their tea from the saucer?

Everything needs to be kept in perspective - Collingwood are rubbish.

Nonetheless, we did a lot right, we had very few passengers if any, and we won by 8 goals despite turning it over a stack. We also fought off a couple of small Collingwood fightbacks (as well as righting the ship after quarter time).

Our team defence has improved since the Port game. We're applying a lot more pressure through the middle. Kent, Kennedy and Petracca were all great in that area today. Kent's workrate was right where it needs to be - now it's about consistency.

Gawn is a superstar. Jones, Vince and Tyson are doing some wonderful work at stoppages. OMac's clearly improving as is Frost I think. I also thought Dawes played a great game. Much more mobile, cleaner hands, and a lot of good support work up the ground. And a shout out to Trengove who did not look out of place at all today.

We'll need to limit the turn overs next week if we are any chance against Sydney (far too many no-pressure missed kicks) but we did what we needed to do, and more, today.

No. That's utter slurp.

Very, very happy. I was invited to a corporate box today. I arrived to find myself the only Dee supporter amongst 15 smug Magpie medicos - almost the worst type of supporter. Well it was my lucky day - I managed to guess the first goal kicker and was the only one to pick that Melbourne would be in front at half, 3/4 and full time. Only missed out on the 1/4 time lead.

Go Dees!!!!

Very nice Jane!

Yes.

i thought nothing of it until you mentioned it but now I'm outraged.

I still think Neale should have stayed off the booze until it was all over.

He was slurring his words from the start which is usually something I receive criticism for.

Politically incorrect with a capital P and a capital I Biff but I should expect no less from you and this thread.

Thought it was very poor of Collingwood to leave the ground before the medal/cup was presented to Gawn. Very poor sportsmanship and an insult to Neale Daniher.

I am not sure Neale would have cared. Melbourne won, and he was surrounded by "family"

We really need to give our coaching staff a lot of credit for pulling this rabbit out of the hat.

I know you're being slightly facetious there Clint, but as I think I brought up a few weeks back, at least they admitted their mistake and made the change.  It's easy to be stubborn by trying to force something that clearly isn't working.  Good on the FD for sucking it up and making the necessary changes.

looked like Dawes had a blinder!

He was very good and so was Ben Kennedy.    Suck it filth and suck it Jeremy Howe!

Excellent. Dawes will make us a better side if he can string games together

That was my favorite Melbourne game in a long time.

But Metro can suck my left one for the replacement bus in and suck my right one for the replacement bus home.

Our transport system is worse than Collingwood's system right now....and that's saying something

Was I watching a different game?  I thought Omac missed some easy spoils, failed to make body contact at all a few times - and Wagner's composure was the worst part of his game, i.e quite a few panicked turnovers...

Yes, you were :)

Would have been lovely if he kicked that set shot from the boundary line. The only query on him so far seems to be his set shot kicking. (Though the sample size is very small)

Cant really see any other weakness in his game.

  • REPORT: Port Adelaide

Of course, it’s not the backline, you might argue and you would probably be right. It’s the boot studder (do they still have them?), the midfield, the recruiting staff, the forward line, the kicking coach, the Board, the interchange bench, the supporters, the folk at Casey, the head coach and the club psychologist  It’s all of them and all of us for having expectations that were sufficiently high to have believed three weeks ago that a restoration of the Melbourne team to a position where we might still be in contention for a finals berth when the time for the midseason bye arrived. Now let’s look at what happened over the period of time since Melbourne overwhelmed the Sydney Swans at the MCG in late May when it kicked 8.2 to 5.3 in the final quarter (and that was after scoring 3.8 to two straight goals in the second term).

  • CASEY: Essendon

Casey’s unbeaten run was extended for at least another fortnight after the Demons overran a persistent Essendon line up by 29 points at ETU Stadium in Port Melbourne last night. After conceding the first goal of the evening, Casey went on a scoring spree from about ten minutes in, with five unanswered majors with its fleet of midsized runners headed by the much improved Paddy Cross who kicked two in quick succession and livewire Ricky Mentha who also kicked an early goal. Leading the charge was recruit of the year, Riley Bonner while Bailey Laurie continued his impressive vein of form. With Tom Campbell missing from the lineup, Will Verrall stepped up to the plate demonstrating his improvement under the veteran ruckman’s tutelage. The Demons were looking comfortable for much of the second quarter and held a 25-point lead until the Bombers struck back with two goals in the shadows of half time. On the other side of the main break their revival continued with first three goals of the half. Harry Sharp, who had been quiet scrambled in the Demons’ first score of the third term to bring the margin back to a single point at the 17 minute mark and the game became an arm-wrestle for the remainder of the quarter and into the final moments of the last.
