Not sure why we are signing on first year players for extensions just 8 games into their career, is it just to Create this impression of every Dee signing up for the future to put more pressure on Hoges?

That's what I thought. Not knocking it but I would've thought this early in his career contracts would be the last thing on a players mind.  Was anyone even worried that he might leave?

It's more the manner in which he did it.

Absolute stamp of approval regarding the Dees.

He's Clarry and he's excited !!

This is good. I imagine Oliver in his second season, he will be an animal.

I said the same about Brayshaw last year ?

You don't think he will be around the 22 in 2019?

AFL asks clubs to invest in players, teenagers, with a maximum 2 year deal. We have essentially turned Oliver's into a 4 year deal.

It is so smart. Why bother waiting and pay more in a year's time?

Seraph - I suspect that barring injury, Brayshaw's second season would be as impressive as his first, but of course we will never know.

Oliver: "It was a very easy decision ... I thought I'd get it out of the way and get it done with because I was going to sign eventually."

I wish some of our other players took this approach.

*cough* hogan *cough*

Can't be too careful these days. Players are brazen enough to walk after their first contract is up. Scully left in a flash. Aish requested a trade after 2 years, Boyd after 1. It's good to lock them away early.

Don't disagree rpfc, good strategy maybe but just a bit odd. The last time we were desperate to extend first year players was in 2010 and as I remember things Trengove signed on but not Scully, so I believe MFC is well aware that Hoges is going to be a problematic signing.

The inference is that we did this to juxtapose what Hogan isn't doing...

We can't extend a promising young player's contract? Can it be about him and not another promising kid?

Just good list management. The dees are identifying who will be a part of their future and locking them up.

Can't recall a first year player getting an extension this early. He is that good!

That was how I saw it.

Any other advantages are just good fortune surely :unsure:

You're honestly not sure why we've moved to re-contract Oliver this early?

I think the evidence is relatively clear.

Thrilled with these recent signings. Hunt, Spencer, Viney and now Clarry! Now to lock away TMac, Watts, Tyson and give Jesse the club's bank account details.

Still absolutely stoked that we chose Oliver over Parish. While I believe that Parish will be a fantastic player, Oliver has a much higher ceiling and could be absolutely anything.

Clarry is still only 18 years old and already built like a brick outhouse with jet engines attached to the sides. Seriously scary to think where he'll be in terms of physicality and skill in five years time.

The club and its invested believers are making a statement.  Ooooooh rah !!

Now all we have to do is win games  ^_^

It's because we are in a great position to front load contracts.

We advertise they it's a contract extension. But that's not really accurate. It's more likely that we have renegotiated his original contract from 2 years to 4. Instead of paying him the standard new player salary for 2 years, we can pay him a heap more now and next year and then greatly lower the amount in the final year/s of the contract.

Oliver wins because we give him a massive pay rise right now based on potential, and ends up getting paid slightly more than he would have by waiting. And we end up winning because we have front loaded the hell out of the contract a d have more to splash around later on.

The big risk for the club is if Oliver doesn't kick on like expected, or if he gets a serious injury.

There is a reason why his manager has recommended he takes it. It's a great deal for his client.

The only reason why we can do this is because we have been rubbish for a decade and struggled to meet minimum salary cap spending. We have been employing this tactic for a long time now and won't be able to do it if all the young players on our list kick on like expected over the next few years. A good problem to have.

Fairly certain you can't do this.  New draftees earn set wages, which you can't increase.

C.f. Tom Boyd in first year at the Dogs was still on rookie wages, with the promise of $millions later.

Collective Bargaining Agreement

9. First Year Draft Choice Players

(f) When a First Year Draft Choice Player is first listed by an AFL Club, that Player and the AFL Club shall enter into a Standard Playing Contract for a minimum term of two years except in the case of a Player who has previously been listed as a Rookie at any AFL Club.

22. Player’s Contract

22.1 Standard Playing Contract (a) All contracts for the playing of Australian Football entered into between a Player, an AFL Club and the AFL shall be in the form of the Standard Playing Contract.

(d) The parties to a Standard Playing Contract, which contract has not been terminated, may vary the terms of the contract or renew the contract for a further term/s, by written agreement of the parties.

22.2 Restructure of Standard Playing Contract (a) Subject to clause 22.2(b), the Parties agree that the Standard Playing Contract shall be restructured to apportion Players’ value for personal services, as distinct from the value for use of Players’ Image, with the restructured Standard Playing Contract to be in operation by no later than 1 November 2014, or such later date as agreed between the Parties. (b) The Parties shall jointly develop the guidelines to apply to the apportioning of players’ value after appropriate consultation with the Australian Taxation Office.

You need to skip to Schedule C.
2. First Year Players
(a) An AFL Club shall pay each first year draft choice Player it employs in 2015 and 2016 the base payments and Senior Match payments per Senior Match set out in the following table:

2 (d) A first year draft choice Player shall not be entitled to, nor shall an AFL Club, pay a first year Player more than the amounts prescribed by this item 2, other than: (i) reasonable relocation expenses and living allowances as set out in item 13 of this Schedule C; (ii) bereavement assistance of up to $2,000 per Player; and (iii) any incentive bonus a Player receives for finishing in the top ten of the AFL Club’s best and fairest award.

Same wording is there under Second Year Players.

Bottom Line - definitely can't pay more than the mandated amounts to 1st/2nd year players.

Wow I must have skimmed that whole section as I remember reading the end once.

You are 100% correct

Wouldn't mind seeing him play forward for parts of some games. Particularly towards the end of the year as he gets tired.  He is a beautiful set shot and is a strong mark.

  • REPORT: Carlton

I am now certain that the decline in fortunes of the Melbourne Football Club from a premiership power with the potential for more success to come in the future, started when the team ran out for their Round 9 match up against Carlton last year. After knocking over the Cats in a fierce contest the week before, the Demons looked uninterested at the start of play and gave the Blues a six goal start. They recovered to almost snatch victory but lost narrowly with a score of 11.10.76 to 12.5.77. Yesterday, they revisited the scene and provided their fans with a similar display of ineptitude early in the proceedings. Their attitude at the start was poor, given that the game was so winnable. Unsurprisingly, the resulting score was almost identical to that of last year and for the fourth time in succession, the club has lost a game against Carlton despite having more scoring opportunities.

  • CASEY: Carlton

The Casey Demons smashed the Carlton Reserves off the park at Casey Fields on Sunday to retain a hold on an end of season wild card place. It was a comprehensive 108 point victory in which the home side was dominant and several of its players stood out but, in spite of the positivity of such a display, we need to place an asterisk over the outcome which saw a net 100 point advantage to the combined scores in the two contests between Demons and Blues over the weekend.
