Good to see the AFL and the political leaders throwing their weight behind Kochie (please note 'sarcasm') 5 years or so after we started the boat! Finally get China Southern on board 2 seasons ago and it appears we have been blindsided by head office with 2 years of backroom deals

I reckon we don't see it as a long term proposition, but necessary at the moment due to our financial state. Others have said on here before that the Chinese couldn't give a flying fig about Aussie Rules footy and I get their point. So perhaps it doesn't have as much potential as Port believes and PJ decided not to push it. I trust in him, but I'd certainly be interested to see the viewer numbers on the Friday night game.

We start winning consistently and you'll see bigger, better sponsors coming on board.

If New Zealand didn't give a fig about AFL, why on earth would the Chinese?

Exactly, and I think you'll find the same thing will happen with the NT deal in the long term. (Provided we start winning that is...)

China's population is rudiculous. All u need is to get a niche crowd and memberships will go through the roof. That said you would need to play the off game their which would be a huge drain on players

I know that Port Adelaide also sponsored the Chinese team at the 2014 International Cup and paid for them to go to Adelaide and have a tour of the facilities despite the tournament being based in Melbourne. I find it strange that Melbourne didn't do anything with the Chinese team given that it could have been done at little to no cost, even if it was as simple as a tour of the facilities. I get the impression that we aren't overly serious about pursuing the Chinese connection.

Is China Southern Airlines still our sponser?

The challenge with China is getting Chinese students on board, not necessarily aiming it at the Chinese market in China. The one and only way you're going to make it in China is if you draft a Chinese-born player. 

I think Melbourne has done a decent job of getting into the eyes and ears of Chinese students in Melbourne, which has among the highest density in the world outside of China of Chinese nationals living in a 1-2km radius. Port simply can't compete in that regard. 

We have already done a lot of what Port is doing now. Koch is two years late.

Nonetheless, China is big enough for more than one team. But I can't imagine Port gaining any more traction with locals than Melbourne have. The key is attracting Chinese nationals at home. Expansion into China is hard without one of them to represent what you're doing (think Yao Ming and what he did for the NBA in China).

Cool. Rather than complain we got shafted we should lobby to go along for the ride with our demonstrated recent history of involvement. We already have a working relationship and regional sponsor which should impress. Present the powers that be with a ready-made rivalry. We can be the team for the politburo and elites and Port can represent the peasants. Perfect. Just leave big Max at home.

We have had a full time liaison working at the club since Schwabs time.

He also works for the State govt in the same capacity.

we are definitely ahead of the pack in this area, as we are with the women's game. 

Nobody in China will want to visit Adelaide anyway. Don't panic.

Seems that China has reacted to the news that Kochie is visiting by banning the cash cow.

Unless they're playing against themselves, good luck with that. The odds of another team agreeing to play over there with only a week to back up for the next game is low.

That is, of course, unless someone is willing to sacrifice short term premiership points for long term gain, so maybe there's a team who will go along with it.
