Did anyone notice Paul Roos say in his presser today that there was an offer already put forward to Tom but his 'Manager' knocked it back..

Sounds like the same [censored] that manages Jeremy Howe.

Maybe he really is worth $700K? :)

He's been outstanding in this first half. His best footy is elite.

Wouldn't get the 2 completely intertwined.

Roos clearly viewed Howe as expendable last year, especially with the footy department desire to bring in competitors. Macca is a competitor, is on the leadership group and is our number one key back. My mail is and has been for a while that he will sign soon as well as an extension to oscar, around the bye.

Just out of curiosity, have you or anyone else ever seen a player contract? I mean, there are literally pages of criteria and elements that go with the salary. My pet hate of the media is saying "player X is on a deal for 750,000 a season." For example. That's never the case, unless player X played all 22 games, plus media contributions, kpi's met and so on. 750k is the absolute maximum speculated. Very rarely is it accurate.

Who does this bloke think he is?? Whatever the club thinks he is worth then that's it !! Take what's on offer or he can go back to Edenhope for all I care.

He clearly overates his ability BIG TIME!

Time to play Hard Ball DEES! Please!

I am seriously over worrying about  what players stay or go.

If they want to be here they will stay if not then don't let the door hit u on the way out.

if nothing else a career in politics is there for the taking for Mr Roos...lol.... very clever with his words...and realigning the direction of discussion. His defelctions are quite masterful as are his little "insertions"

Yep! Love this line of thinking!

TMac is not the most important cog in our game.  The club has worked out to a penny I reckon where he sits. That will be what he's paid should he decide to stay...all good. ( not as main back though ) .. If he walks...no sleep lost for mine

tbh  i thinks hes a few tickets on himself.. Thats not in and of itself a bad thing in footy....  but you have to back it up...he cant

Think hard Tom..

I was being facetious. Player contract amounts aren't something I give any real thought towards. As long as we are fitting all our key players under the cap, I'm happy. It's why I've never understood the complaints over what we were/are paying Dawes. We had a minimum spend, and Dawes was around at the right time to be deemed worthy of the reported salary he was given. Good luck to him.

Maybe the offer is below what he thinks he is worth and he is trying to play a better 2nd half of the year to boost his contract offer... That might make sense...

Speculating / inferring again???  What gives you that right?

So a manager that tries to do the best by his client is a ... What if it was a lowball offer to test the waters?

what if it wasn't ?

You may be right but the club seems to have a pretty good handle on player's worth these last few years. Maybe little Tommy got a bit of a reality check !!

Deciphering the Roo's speak of his latest presser I got the distinct impression  Tmac needs to pull his socks up and keep them up. The standard the club requires of him ( and all ) is what you put out on a really good day...but make that EVERY game !!

Currently his brother is playing as there's no direct choice.  I think  Tom might be playing somewhat on his laurels. Needs a rocket

Of course a manager aint going to up his worth at all is he? After all, it won't benefit the manager in any way shape or form!

Oh Wait a minute??

Here we go again!  http://www.afl.com.au/news/2016-06-10/tom-mcdonald-in-no-rush-to-resign-with-demons?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=RSS+feed%3A+AFL+Latest+News

Tom is quoted:

"I just hope they don't see me in a different light because I haven't got a contract sorted yet. I'm not too worried about what others are saying about me on the outside," McDonald said.

"I hope the club rates me and thinks of me as a long-term player at the club, but that's to be done behind closed doors.

"I'm loving playing at Melbourne this year and I've got such great mates here. That (contract situation) can be worked out at a later date."

I don't know why he would doubt the club sees him as a 'long-term player at the club'.  The last report was he had been offered a contract out to 2020.

This sort of stuff is just fueling doubt by everyone, even tho Roos said recently he would be staggered if TMc didn't sign.

If TMc isn't prepared to sign, fine, but I wish he would shut up about it!

"I just hope they don't see me in a different light because I haven't got a contract sorted yet. I'm not too worried about what others are saying about me on the outside," McDonald said.

"I hope the club rates me and thinks of me as a long-term player at the club, but that's to be done behind closed doors."

That's code for "give me more money or I'll go somewhere that rates me higher  (ie offers more $$$$)

He's handling this as poorly as Frawley did in his final year. Fortunately there's no, "If Roosy signs on for another year, I'll sign on!" quote yet, but it's heading that way.

I agree with the poster that said the club have probably offered him a contract reflective of his mediocre output so far this year, so he wants to get his numbers up to justify asking for more money.

I reckon that guy was spot on! :)

You have already made it clear that English isn't your strong suit so I'll try and use small words for you.

This site is for opinions but when you say its "clear from what Gerard Healy says...' and go on to make statements that give your assumptions (is that too big a word for you?) about you think GH means and then claiming it as virtual fact what Tom's manager did or didn't say means you are taking the leap into speculation. Then you go on to deny it and accuse others of being breathtakingly arrogant. Good stuff pal.

Our free education system clearly isn't working.

If you want to have opinions, great. Just don't claim them to be something other than that.

You do realize Dazzle that in any negotiation there will be offer and counter offer, it's the way things work.

Something I've always wondered ...

Are there people here who believe that the player should accept the club's first offer?

No speculative element in "maybe" of course, just opinion!  I am relieved nonetheless to see you've discovered the proper noun "English".  Trust you're aware what constitutes a proper noun?

I reiterate that Healy's comments weren't open to multiple interpretations - go back and read the verbatim quote.  Moreover, subsequent events in recent days (including the Paul Roos observations) would tend to vindicate my assessment that McDonald's manager has been overreaching in the discussions to date with the MFC.  Seemingly that is now the consensus view in this thread!

The "jnr" component of your Demonland handle seems most apt!

and who's to say this is the opening offer from the club ? Just saying :o

This is a bloke's career and he and his Manager are entitled to take their time and get the best outcome, without any concern to supporters impatience.

I find it funny that supporters think they know what salaries players should get and get affronted when players want to get what they think they are worth in the marketplace.

FWIW i think both Macs will be with us for some time yet.

AND.....when players put the team ahead of the size of individual contracts you can start to build a premiership list eg Geelong and Hawthorn. All players say they want to be involved in that kind of culture but you gotta take a hit to be in. So you cant really have it both ways.  In fact you cant really a premiership list any other way.  So he and Watts either see the possibility here or they don't but if they do they need to demonstrate that.

We used to be a club that had to offer massive overs to get players even slightly  interested in coming to us. Managers would check in with us to get the best offer and go back to the clubs that they knew their players wanted to go to and bargain. We CANT be that kind of a club if we're serious.
