I watched Trenners pretty closely today from level 2 behind the goals. Most of the above are spot on but ill add some thoughts:

- he only played 90 minutes (of the >120 minutes), about the same as Mellsham and Salem, with JKH our lowest at 82.

-he effectively played on the left back pocket on Sam Grey for 90% of his time on ground. Picked up Boak a couple of times.

- Acted as a structural general, pointing and setting players and positions constantly

- Didn't attack much: only left his place in the zone when his direct opponent ran into the contest. This happened less info the second half. 

- Mostly got possessions linking across half back either when we switched our as a safe option.  Got involved a couple of times when he was in the play. 

- I saw him get beaten by his specific man twice.  Once by Grey up the field on the HFF (the ball went out of centre bounce, Grey got their first, and got an inside 50 that resulted in a goal) and once during a run on play by Boak I think, as a chain of possessions caught our structure out

- He obviously isnt fast. That didn't matter when our structure was working.  He wasn't going to chase guys down but was fine in general play.

 

 

 

My thoughts are he offers more than many.  I think there is a role for him when Vince and Lewis decline but unsure where he sits in the coaches eyes behind Wagner and Smith in the longer term. Does Melksham fit into this group too or is he a forward now? Trenners didn't play mid, and he didn't attack much, so it's clear to me what his role is at the moment. Just wait and see if they think he is handy depth. 

I also watched Trenners closely from the top deck, which is good for seeing running patterns  etc.  I agree with Deanox observations especially his role as a 'structural general', he was very assertive at this and considering Port didn't kick a goal till close to half time you would have to say he was very effective.  Seemed to slot in much better than Smith or Wagner.

I think Trengove compliments Hunt at half back. We all love Hunt's dash but often he gets himself in a tight spot and kicks it to the opposition.  Trenners provides a get out option, doesn't panic and almost every time hit a target.  This was a big improvement to last week and Trenners really contributed to it.

There's no doubt he still wants an AFL career and as much as I'd love him to stay at the club, I think he's going to get greater game time elsewhere.

Trenners is only 25.  So if we keep him on, he may end up surprising all over again, with the freedom to just play & play smart. with his maturity & experiences.

Remember also that we got blokes like Riggers, McDonald (Anthony) and Cell at the age of 24 and all had respectable careers.

That is a really good article, if Jack can hold on to his place in the ones, all power to him. 

 

He has the smarts and skills to be very handy across half back.  Tough when needed as does not miss a tackle.

He's in an interesting circumstance I reckon.

With Lewis, Vince and Jones to a lesser degree all approaching the end of their careers, Trengove must be thinking hard about staying on and enjoying the potential spoils over the next decade should he get back to best 22. The other side of the coin is accepting that he's probably going to be battling his backside off in the magoos more often than not and remaining frustrated.

If his body is back to AFL standard and capable of very good footy, he surely must put himself out in the open market - particularly as a free agent.

Watched him from the top deck as well. l counted 3 times almost in succession early in the last quarter when port was getting on top where he didn't appear to be able to keep up with his opponent. Was given a break shortly after. Overall game was good and rapt to see him playing again but am a little concerned he will get exposed in big games. Will need to excel at anticipating ball movement up the ground to make up for being a little slow

I think they will offer him another year however might be as a rookie. Also, they probably won't guarantee him game time.

Don't disagree with the best case scenario being that he gets a rookie spot. However I think the fact the club hasn't actually stated his development areas publicly might be an acknowledgement that they want to protect his currency in the market place as he might not be there next year and others might be interested.

Having said all that, like everyone, I hope he can improve further in the next few games and get a chance to keep working on regaining his speed in the pre-season. In the meantime, he needs to make up for his speed by continuing to improve and become elite at anticipating, reading the play, making decisions, and getting more possessions like Lewis does. Don't think he is there yet but its only his 1st game back and should get better

I've always been a Jack Trengove fan, so adjust for bias as necessary. I thought he was solid on Saturday, without being brilliant, which is fine given that he has barely played at this level for four years. Jack probably needs to step up a level or two to be a regular player in a full strength side, but he was miles ahead of guys like White & Wagner who have been preferred to him at various stages.

Ultimately he was one of 22 who played their role, in a strong team performance. He is not a Viney who can drag a team along with him, nor a but few are. He was cool & calm in possession, did his job defensively, and didn't give me any heart palpitations. He certainly earned a second game next week, and I will be disappointed if he doesn't get it.

Beyond that, he is one of a group of 8-10 players who will probably come in and out of the side as form and match ups demand. I have an in form Stretch & Brayshaw ahead of him, Vince at a similar level, and the likes of Bugg, Wagner and Vandenberg below. The likes of Harmes, Kennedy-Harris and Neal-Bullen have earned their spots on form, but could easily fall out with a couple of quiet games.

 

 

If the Trengove of 2011/12 turned up he would stroll back into our current best 22. The Jack from five seasons ago was Bartel-like with his marking, could run all day, could read the play, had above average disposal and could kick 50m. Aside from his leadership qualities he was made captain because he was a very good player. 

Asde from the obvious emotional desire for a Phoenix rebirth a fully fit and firing Trengove could give us pretty much a free hit at a bloody good player. It still freaks me out to think he is only 25. I would be tempted to give him one more season to see where it takes him.

Congratulations to Jess Trengove for a fantastic effort finishing 9th in the marathon at the World Championships. She and Jack are obviously very close and this result must have given him a real boost.

It seems Jack played a big part in her run, albeit in absentia:

"This is my ninth marathon and I had a little thing about number nine, it is my brother's footy number, Adam [Didyk] my coach wrote me a little letter before the race saying 'I think there is something special about this number nine thing, run proud out there knowing its your brother's footy number' and then to finish ninth, it's a fairytale," she said.

I found that quite moving. 

Well done for doing yourself, your family and our country proud.

No, he was too slow back then as well.

I really wanted Trengove to succeed because he is such a great guy and he was solid against Port Adelaide, but sadly he has played his last game at AFL level which is a shame.

You were saying this before he made it back to play in two more games and you've always banged on about how slow you think he is.

Clearly that's my opinion, what you quoted was factually incorrect, you just made it up.

It is an interesting one.  We all would love to see the story develop and him find his place.  Perhaps he is the backline general aka Lewis - what would one more preseason do for development (since he has been stuffed for so long).  He didn't look to have explosive acceleration and was burned off by a few players in the port game (I actually breathed a sigh of relief when he was swapped to the bench and Hunt came back on).

However, he may have a future as the 'steady head' in the back half, that is the 100% reliable outlet passer.  He can take a tough grab, we know he can stick a tackle, he has footy smarts and is a good ball user.  If he was able to run both ways and hold the structure, as well as break for outlet passes, he could be a real beauty for us.

That is all a big 'if'.  I would like to know what the footy department thought about what an additional preseason would offer him.  If they thought he could add some speed to his tank, then I say offer him another contract.  Otherwise, like Lyndon Dunn, he doesn't really fit the game style that Goody is trying to build at the club.
