I just read that and I must be a trainee idiot!!

It must be worse than going for a license again!!!

I read it this morning Jack and I was none the wiser. FMD!!

just as well bitters as that would be a new sensation (wisdom) for you and you might feel disoriented

That is pretty thorough.

Have a cup of tea and read through it properly - it isn't a proposed change - it is here whether you understand it or not.

She's so thorough that it almost becomes more complicated.

A lot of it is for the Northern clubs to consider more than us.

Trade week was where the real damage was done. I expect a pretty smooth bid and match for the highly rated kids come draft night.

1 rule that has to change immediately is the bit about the first round v later round discounts if a team like North bid with their first round pick that has been shuffled back. If it starts the night as a first round pick it should stay a first round pick regardless of how many academy players have jumped ahead of it. That will have wider implications if/when the AFL and AFLPA start bringing in some different length contracts for draftees based on draft round.

Actually was a good read...very illiminating. Smashing stuff !! :)

So it doesn't have to change immediately...

I thought it was very clear.

Even the part where the software overrides the decision of the recruiting manager with NO!

You can't do that. I just hope there aren't any software glitches on the night.

Then again that could be fun to see them panic.

So, if in the draft we do nominate all of the F/S and academy players (assuming that they will definitely be taken by the respective clubs they are attached to...) would that improve the value of our picks 46 & 50? As I read it the clubs involved 'spend' their points, moving those used picks to the back of the draft queue, so if we forced them to spend these early a 46 could become a 30 - 35... Maybe...

If their f/s pick was bid for at say 10 they would have to part with enough selections that add up to whatever pick 10 is worth.

Now that maybe a round 2 and a round 3 ( say 21 & 37) Our picks 46 & 50 would change to 44 & 48.

This could change again if other clubs do that to another f/s or academy player.

I had my doubts about the effectiveness of all of this but it really adds a dynamic, one which of itself has a great leveling effect really.

I really rate Emma Quayle.

Her understanding of the game,it nuances and what effects what is really second to none.

I think in the main he judgements of players is very good but she does have a few biases of sorts and like all us mere mortals gets things askew on occasions. Overall though i find her immensely informative.

The explanation of bidding has allowed me to participate in the thinkings and dialogues in other threads. Rpfc has helped some also.

We could go:

Pick 3 - Mills

4 - Hopper

5 - Kennedy

And see them all matched.

Then go a bit riskier with the Brisbane boys

6 - Eric Hipwood

7 - Ben Keays

But I think that's the draft version of trade weeks "put them in to the PSD". Sounds great in theory, but in reality it screws your relationship with the clubs, risks you missing out on the player you want and getting stuck with the academy kid who doesn't want to be at your club anyway.

Our 46 and 50 should come in to at least 41 and 45 which should still leave us with players we want on our draft list. Taylor mentioned in the AFL Podcast that he had about 45 names on his list worth drafting. With a touch of luck we could be drafting about the 30th-35th best player on our list at those picks.

Posted

So considering we got GWS pick 7 you wouldn't think we would bid for Hopper?

Posted

I think it is our duty to go for Mills at pick 3.

If the Swans want him, they will have to spend some points to get him. (If we don't then the responsibility falls to Essendon.)

Then it's the bombers turn to bid at pick 4 so as to get one of the academy kids or at least get GWS to give points if they want their man.

The more teams don't bid, the less points the northern teams have to cough up.

The only problem lies if we are trying to bluff and get landed with a player that we don't really want.

But We have witnessed our recruiting department over the past month. They play a good game of poker.

I'll be very surprised if we bid on GWS players after trading 10 for 7. Nothing would have been said at the time, but if we do bid on them a deal like that will not be available to us in future.

Another important factor though is recruiter credibilty. Taylor will want to select who he thinks is best player, bid on Heeney, probably bid on Mills.

I'd be a bit surprised if we bid 3 on the GWS boys. But if either of them are there 7 then I think we will have to bid. They are worth it and we did give them a decent amount of points with the 2 picks for that swap of 7-10. It's not like they gave us charity.

Considering we paid top dollar for the Tyson and Frost trades as well I'm not big on the idea that we owe them anything.

Until this, I thought we had picks 3 & 7, but clearly not necessarily so. While I think I get it, it just doesn't seem any more equitable to me.

How about you wait until you see what the Northern clubs get at the draft apart from their Academy kids.

RETURN TO NORMAL by Whispering Jack

One of my prized possessions is a framed, autographed guernsey bearing the number 31 worn by my childhood hero, Melbourne’s champion six time premiership player Ronald Dale Barassi who passed away on 16 September 2023, aged 87. The former captain who went on to a successful coaching career, mainly with other clubs, came back to the fold in his later years as a staunch Demon supporter who often sat across the way from me in the Northern Stand of the MCG cheering on the team. Barassi died the
