Great advice ‘McQ’…a very worthy read.

I can’t imagine how tough times were for working folk during the war years but this: “During the 1916 season, the club (Collingwood) disguised gifts to players and committeemen as presents to soldiers. But Collingwood was not alone. Carlton chose to pay off debt rather than contribute to the (war) Fund” is astounding!

The article puts into a new perspective for me, the feats of our club heroes honoured by our B&F awards.

I felt very, very proud of my football club reading that article.

Unfortunately this isn't well known. It would be great if more light were shed on the facts.

But as it says it's a cash cow and Collingwood is there because they can pull a crowd.

I went last year it was a real buz to walk out a winner on a Friday night especially when year after year all you do is watch other teams in that time slot , we as fans need to take advantage of this and turn up.

Not that Carlton wont have Friday night exposure, but that supposedly an additional "5 or 6" clubs wont have Thursday or Friday night games. Surely that is a load of [censored] or the AFL are an absolute disgrace.

They talk of equalisation, but if this is true, it would mean that 12 teams are getting all the prime slots, meaning that they get massive exposure benefits which leads to increased sponsorship and membership which will ultimately make the competition more uneven.

I'm hoping its not true, as it is a most short-sighted decision which cripples clubs like ours time and time again.

I wait with bated breath to see what the actual fixture looks like......

Surely the AFL wouldn't even consider something so one sided :-(((. (irony)

Agreed. GC, Brisbane, GWS, St Kilda, Melbourne to all have zero Friday nights is what I'm predicting, and maybe Essendon to have zero as well.

I'll be pretty upset if any of the other members of the bottom 6 get one and we don't.

Ess will get one, we won't as a home, maybe an away game. Can't see GWS, GC, Carlton, lions getting a fri home game, or away possibly.

If the AFL think Ess will get little to no suspension they may get one later in the year. Saints maybe a home, but def an away, they are the love child of the bottom teams.

FYI Eddie - A fair amount of European countries celebrate 2 Christmas days!

It's a great move by the two clubs and hopefully remains supported by the AFL. Will be interesting to see how it pans out - I have my reservations, especially how it will work when ANZAC day falls mid week though could help the scheduling with the 4 clubs playing each other the week before/after so each has a similar break. We may have been better off trying fir a permanent Friday game each ANZAC round but you can't fault the clubs for trying.

It's important we try and get as big a crowd as possible to this one. Hopefully the weather helps, from memory last year was drizzling all afternoon with bad weather expected that night so it would have kept some of the neutrals and 50/50's away.

Like you, I think it will be a massive crowd. I think the Anzac Eve concept will work, even mid-week. Getting Richmond & Collingwood at two key times of the year is massive for our club.

This is an event that would allow Richmond, Melbourne & many neutral supporters to get behind it. Even for many that cannot attend the Anzac Day game. The fact that it's a public day the next day, would present an opportunity to allow many to enjoy & remember. I'm expecting this to gather even more momentum if the stakeholders including the AFL continue to get behind it. So it may remain an annual event.
