NATIONAL DRAFT PICKS 3 & 7

Featured Replies

Great news ... to offset the loss of our first rounder next year we can just bring in a couple of decent free agents - the club could very well have that all that mapped out as a default move. If that happens, we're miles in front on the deal (providing we draft well of course - fingers crossed)

The best part about this whole trade period is we seem to have a clear plan on what we want and what we need ... well played to all involved! I wonder if there's more to come?

Might be one person's opinion on Weideman but I can't recall a less inspiring write up for a potential top 10er - http://www.boundforg...e-sam-weideman/

Yeah he's not an inspiring prospect. Feel like he's only climbed the phantom draft's because he is the only other 'true key forward'. Would he be an option as a forward/backup ruck type player? I don't think his running is good enough to ruck.

Dream would be if Curnow or Francis somehow slipped so we could get them as well as Parish. mmmmm dreaming....

There is. I feel like Big Kev, I am excited.

They said similar things about Darling and we know how that ended.

With him filling his shorts on grand final day? :)

That's not true, either. Darling has always had an excellent tank for a start. He also broke a data points record in the u16s with an all round performance. What scared the clubs away was his off field issues.

That Weideman write up is an eyebrow raiser. But the FD will make the right call.

That's comforting!

i will never forget watching Matthew Richardson playing his first game.

Awkward, slight, gangly etc etc

Shane Warne too - he bowled way too fast and flat for his leg spin to be of any effect in his first game for Victoria.

Hats off to those who can view the future through the thick glass at the end of a bottle

He helped get them there.

What was Cook doing again?

Getting a bit sidetracked here. No-one is arguing that clubs weren't silly to overlook Darling for the reasons they did.

That's new P-man?

I hope no one says he could be our next Cook or Toumpas.

You just did!

I doubt it is possible to pick that badly again Mr. Leg.

Isn't it good to be worrying about who to pick at Pick 3, only because we have just acquired that pick today, and not by Round 5?!

Darling was made out to be some sort of animal. It was all overblown, he was made out to be an undisciplined thug. Then we later find out that Darling is a black belt in Taekwondo and quite a reserved character. I only mention the black belt because that alone takes some form of discipline.

What they have done, is exactly what they intended to do and what they communicated. To improve the list getting in certain age players who will add and strengthen our list and improve our draft position. They've worked hard and haven't sat still like many have been spruiking on these boards.

Just the first two picks alone from 6 and 25 to 3 and 10 (maybe 3 and 7 given what has been mooted) is a massive improvement netting two high quality picks for the Draft.

I was pleased with the Melksham trade and at the time very displeased with the Kennedy trade. However it makes much more sense after this move. Add Bugg, and I'm personally very happy with this trade period.

Me too and it is improved further by having another top pick in the first ten. Non other than Christian Petracca. He surely must be regarded as a new addition to our squad. If he is as good as Brayshaw I will be delighted. Fancy, 3 recruits in the top ten. Wow!!!

The narrative will be:

the player we are really keen on won't slip past 3 and the player we were looking 6 will be available at 10.

Happy with the deal.

Might be able to add Trengove to that list of new recruits. Fingers crossed.

Whoever we pick at 10 the narrative will be the player slid to 10.

That is past.

We have a totally different recruiting panel, that puts in 9 months per year looking at all the different propositions under match conditions.

Totally different than what we did 4 - 10 years ago.

I know Barney but I could not help myself when P-man was criticising Darling.

I think Essendon are in the great position we were in last year.

Last year we had the choice of three combinations Mccartin/Brayshaw or Mccartin/Petracca, ended up with Petracca/Brayshaw :)

Essendon have the choice of Parish/Curnow or Parish/Francis or Curnow/Francis. They are in a good position with those two back to back picks.

Whoever we pick at 10 the narrative will be the player slid to 10.

Or, "i can't believe he was still available at pick10. We rated him at #4"

It's such a departure on how we've done things previously ... to get better the list builders need to use all avenues at their disposal.

Free agency is the next step and to me it looks like we've put pressure on ourselves (next year) to go down that path - and that's a good thing. Or, as someone else suggested, we may trade to get back into the first round of drafting next year.

I know Barney but I could not help myself when P-man was criticising Darling.

Haha ffs. YOU brought up Darling in saying that similar criticisms were made of him before he was drafted as were being made of Weideman, which I pointed out wasn't exactly the case.

Edit: If you're referring to the GF comment as "criticism", it was a light hearted jab. Darling is obviously a gun.

This is a bizarre tangent.

Or, as someone else suggested, we may trade to get back into the first round of drafting next year.

We can still go after Prestia next year by trading another future 1st rounder to GC (2017), we may even give up our 2nd rounder (2016) to help give them points for their Academy player's they have next year.

It just mean we won't be able to do any future picks trading of 1st rounders for the next 2 years afterwards.

CONFIRMED:

Tomas Bugg and Pick 7 go to the Dees

Dees lose: Picks 10, 43 and 64!

Hot diggity dog!

Ok pick 3 and 7 now ?

  • DRAFT: The Next Generation

It was not long after the announcement that Melbourne's former number 1 draft pick Tom Scully was departing the club following 31 games and two relatively unremarkable seasons to join expansion team, the Greater Western Giants, on a six-year contract worth about $6 million, that a parody song based on Adele's hit "Someone Like You" surfaced on social media. The artist expressed lament over Scully's departure in song, culminating in the promise, "Never mind, we'll find someone like you," although I suspect that the undertone of bitterness in this version exceeded that of the original.

  • AFLW REPORT: Brisbane

A steamy Springfield evening set the stage for a blockbuster top-four clash between two AFLW heavyweights. Brisbane, the bookies’ favourites, hosted Melbourne at a heaving Brighton Homes Arena, with 5,022 fans packing in—the biggest crowd for a Melbourne game this season. It was the 11th meeting between these fierce rivals, with the Dees holding a narrow 6–4 edge. But while the Lions brought the chaos and roared loudest, the Demons aren’t done yet.
