GWS went down the road of recruiting blokes from the same junior club to keep a tight bond of draftees, rather than taking those who were rated at going No.1 and 2. Consequently seeing Toumpas slide to us at 4 when realistically he should have gone higher..

GWS mads the mistake of recruiting players from the same junior club, or the same state, as a way of attempting to alleviate the "go home" factor. They should have backed themselves, and taken best available.

They avoided Toumpass with this strategy though:cool:

No they didn't, at all..

O'Rourke was expected to go to Richmond at around pick 9 and Plowman no early then six but potentially outside the top 10,

they simply wanted to keep mates together to avoid the go home factor

Imagine if they had Whitfield, Wines and Stringer with those three picks now.

We would've had Wines if they'd taken Toumpas. Sliding doors!

Always so many "ifs"

IF we had picked Wines, or Stringer, we may have won a few more games and never had a look in at Brayshaw and Petracca.

Time to move on.

Oh I agree, I'm just pointing out the futility of dwelling on the past. We can't change it so why worry about it? It is what it is.

reminds me of the spartans. Philip ii of macedon sent a message to the spartans " "You are advised to submit without further delay, for if I bring my army into your land, I will destroy your farms, slay your people, and raze your city."  to which the spartans replied "if". philip and his son alexander (the great) declined to invade sparta.

I don't believe that it is a recruiting failure, simply because someone taken after your selection ends up a better player, but rather, it is when you take someone with a high pick, who is never going to make it in the  AFL and as we have seen in the past, even at VFL level.

Obviously players develop at different levels and will do differently if in good clubs or poor clubs.

But when you waste a high pick, on a bloke who just can't play at an AFL standard, after being given time to develop, that is when you have a recruiting failure IMO.

"The past is a foreign country; they do things differently there." The opening line from The Go Between, L.P. Hartley.

I never miss an opportunity to trot that one out. And clearly readers of a football supporters' forum will be very receptive to that information.

A previous coach misread his name as Clarence rather than Clayton.  It was mentioned in an article a while back.

C&B in the MCC it will inevitably be "Jordie Mckenzie" or "Number 13" for  the first half of the year.

You can use either then.  ?

I'm also in the MCC, but I expect to hear a few renditions of "well done Bater!" and "wow, Blease has bulked up a bit!"

I don't know why the MCC members, the ones who fork out the most every year to see the Dees play, are considered to be the least knowledgeable supporters

There's an obvious level of commitment/dedication there, simply by virtue of the cash you have to fork out

MATCH SIM: Friday 7th February 2025

Demonland Trackwatcher Gator ventured down the freeway to bring you his observations from Friday morning's Match Simulation out at Casey Fields. Rehab: Jake Lever and Charlie Spargo running laps.  Lever was running short distances at a fast click as well as having kick to kick with a trainer. He seems unimpeded. Christian Petracca, Kade Chandler, Shane McAdam and Tom Fullarton doing non-contact kicking and handball drills on the adjacent oval.  All moving freely at pace.  I didn’

THAT WAS THE YEAR THAT WAS: 2024

Whichever way you look at it, the Melbourne Football Club’s 2024 season can only be characterized as the year of its fall from grace. Whispering Jack looks back at the season from hell that was. After its 2021 benchmark premiership triumph, the men’s team still managed top four finishes in the next two seasons but straight sets finals losses consigned them to sixth place in both years. The big fall came in 2024 with a collapse into the bottom six and a 14th placing. At Casey, the 2022 VFL p
