we clearly need that type of player, I think Kennedy fills that role to an extent and Salem certainly playing through the middle, but Anderson would walk into our best 22 imo and really add a whole new dimension

I know very little about him. In fact, I don't recall seeing him play, but if he has any toe, his disposal is neat and he's strong in the contest, he'd certainly fill a role.

I have no doubt that if Roos/Goodwin think JA would fit into our plans they'd have a red hot crack. That we haven't heard much noise about who the Club is going after is good news to me. Melksham aside, we haven't said too much (and a lot of that noise is from JM and his manager). Going to be an interesting trade period.

10 games in 3 seasons. 4 this year, 0 last year.

If he hasn't been injured, I'm tipping this guy is another Michie/Newton/Riley.

Edit: I see he was injured last year. Still, regarding this year, I believe that if the player is good enough, they can force their way in to sides. Hawthorn used plenty of their VFL players through the year and this guy was clearly a long way down the pecking order. Recent experience has made me very wary of taking players in this position.

completely disagree, watching him in the handful of games he played before getting injured he was great. Tough, has a bit of pace, good size and much liked by hawks fans. Plus trying to crack into a team going for three straight flags whilst coming back from injury (see brendan Whitecross), is a bit harder than getting into port of freo.

Weren't even mentioned in the 5 Melbourne clubs looking at him, so... yeah.

Like I said, do you think the other 12 clubs won't sit down with Hawthorn this week during the routine discussions and enquire about Anderson ??

What none of us know is where a player of Anderson's ilk would fit into the salary cap. Or what he's worth on the free market.

Don't forget we've had to pay way overs to reach the 92.5% minimum. There's VFL-standard scrubbers earning a tidy salary on our list.

Media speculation equivalent of throwing mud on a wall and seeing what sticks. Be the smarter man, yeah ??

He should take whichever damn club will give him 22 games a year provided he works his butt off.

Otherwise he's another spoiled, entitled GenY brat, and I don't want him.

Probably the most ridiculous stance I've seen on this matter.

Why ?

Why should Jed be allowed to pick which club he goes to after 10 games of senior footy ?

If you're going to act all uppity and condescending, at least give me a reason why ?

Sorry, didn't realise you were such a precious little rose petal. Funny though.

The kid is not getting games & wants to leave for opportunity.

Considering he's doing that, and the norm is to state a preference, why should he not be allowed to also?

It doesn't mean necessarily refusing to look at any other options or holding the club over a barrel ensuring they get inequitable compensation.

Simply he's looking for more opportunity elsewhere, and may exercise the now-common option of nominating a preferred destination.

Why that has anything to do with being a spoiled brat or Gen Y is holed up in your little head.

Unless you think he should be made to toil away in the VFL for another few seasons at Box Hill until Hawthorn decides to elevate or delist him because... Just because clubs should have all the power?

Your antiquated logic doesn't apply here anymore.

And to put a line through the kid's name for it would be the height of pigheaded stubbornness & ignorance.

If you're good in a particular line of work and not under contract, it's a given that you have the right to choose your work place. That's not being petulant.

BTW, Anderson IS under contract. And having a draft system goes against that theory. I can't think of another major sporting body that doesn't allow clubs to trade players against their will. Everything is in the players favour at the moment, and the balance needs to be redressed.

Football(soccer) in general.

Without a single competition and an overarching arbiter of the game, soccer has had to incorporate more of an industrial approach to transfers, with the Bosman ruling years ago changing the nature of transfers and compensation for players coming out of contract.

The sport is facing real change to the transfer system again with contract industrial lawyers challenging the very nature of transfers and club ownership of players. The restraint of trade argument will come to the fore, with transfer fees for clubs squarely in the gun (potentially free movement for players regardless of contract status).

Being a relatively small (in world terms) competition helps the AFL in largely avoiding these discussions as its in the AFLPA's best interests to allow the AFL to maintain trading, drafting and a salary cap to manage the competition and division of money.

But clubs have to agree on a transfer amount or the deals off. In the AFL, if clubs don't agree on a trade, the player just walks into the draft, and the team gets nothing.

In soccer? If a player's out of contract, he goes wherever he wants, transfer not an option.

True, but they brought in transfer windows to avoid that very reason. These days, there isn't a chance of the club choosing the best trade deal.

The AFLPA often compare the benefits that US professional sportsmen receive, such as percentage of broadcasting agreement, but never factor in the downfalls, like in the NBA and MLB, where you can be traded anywhere, and cut at any time

Is anyone else worried about the Lake, Hale, Suckling and possibly Anderson departures opening up ~$1m in the Hawks cap (minus any TPP excess they paid this year)?

Could they steal Treloar?

Worth noting that Hawthorn gave JA permission to shop around and test the water. Not unreasonable for him to look for the workplace that best suits him I would've thought.

Something big is going to happen with Hawthorn in trade week. You can just feel it.

Good job there's no Hawkish influence at AFL house

According to the AFL website Hawthorn want a pick around 25 for Anderson, I'd prefer to get him than Melksham.

I completely agree.. Only 21 years of age. He suits our bill to a tee. Youth, has had AFL experience and is a competitor. A must get I believe.

How is a kid who's played 10 AFL games averaging less than 10 possessions, better than a 100 game player who finished 9th in Dons B&F this year and 5th a few years back?

Really!?

Demonland Trackwatcher Gator ventured down the freeway to bring you his observations from Friday morning's Match Simulation out at Casey Fields. THAT WAS THE YEAR THAT WAS: 2024

Whichever way you look at it, the Melbourne Football Club’s 2024 season can only be characterized as the year of its fall from grace. Whispering Jack looks back at the season from hell that was. After its 2021 benchmark premiership triumph, the men’s team still managed top four finishes in the next two seasons but straight sets finals losses consigned them to sixth place in both years. The big fall came in 2024 with a collapse into the bottom six and a 14th placing. At Casey, the 2022 VFL p
