2015 Player Review - # 48 Jack Fitzpatrick

Beat the Bulldogs' great hope Tom Boyd pointless but two weeks later, his tunnel ball throw against the Magpies was costly for the team and for his future at the club. He spent the rest of the season at Casey and was delisted soon after season's end.

Not sure if anyone had the misfortune of watching Bounce last night, but Jack was on the show as the winner of Danny Frawley's "Don't Come Monday" segment, and it was honestly some of the most awkward television I have seen.

Can you go into more detail FD?

As bad as that error was from Fitz (and it was shocking!) I thought he was harshly done by. Other then that incident he played well that day taking the points against Jesse White, and we know what he did to Boyd.

Watched him several times at Casey this year and he was often in the best. I'll be amazed if someone doesn't pick him up as a delisted free agent. Bulldogs and Freo especially.

I watched it. It was pretty awkward.

Fitz basically won coach killer moment of the year with his tunnelball effort. He accepted his award and tried to make light of it by saying it was up there with him getting diabetes. He then revealed he'd been delisted which came as news to Frawley. Dunstall tried to salvage something with some questions about what his best position was and where he saw his career going from here i.e. being delisted. Fitz said he had no preference for either end of the ground and that he hoped another club would pick him up.

Dawes won the other joke award (cause lol Melbourne amirite?) with the worst dribble kick of the year. Dunstall asked him essentially when Melbourne were not going to be [censored] anymore. He said it would happen eventually, and that he hoped he'd be around for it.

Compare this with Alex Rance winning the golden fist and getting a big kiss on the cheek from Frawley with cheers all round.

It wasn't pretty viewing as a Melbourne fan.

Does sound cringe worthy.

All the best to Fitz with his future. He's had a lot to overcome in his career to date.

Another player that has had two year under Roos and one under McCartney. Players were clearly told where they stood and what was required.

Again I take this as a sign that our list is getting stronger.

I worry about our key position depth, and thought Fitzy might have got enough year. Having said that he has had plenty long enough to cement a spot in the senior side, and hasn't been able to do so. I guess he could get a rookie spot elsewhere if the planets align for him.

I disagree. Unless the key position forward is an A-B grader, they're a liability (Dawes). Clubs rarely have key position forward depth. As for KP backmen, we have plenty.

I never shared the love for Fitzpatrick from day 1, so not surprised to see him delisted.

Pretty much as P-Man put it. Fitzy took the mickey out of himself, which is a good quality, but Frawley in particular treated him pretty disrespectfully I thought. And the fact he did actually get delisted and they seemed none the wiser, made it a lot worse. Dunstall tried to restore some dignity, but Frawley dragged it back down to his level pretty quickly. It's hard to explain, but it just didn't feel right when the bloke has just lost his job.

I think Jack's a smart enough bloke not to be bothered watching that rubbish programme anyway.

I think the FD issue with Fitzy was that he was not hard enough at the ball, and need to get more aggression /hardness into his play.

I also saw some good results at Casey and his performance on Boyd was commensurate to Frawely's coup against Kennedy on the weekend (however it was not the GF was it?). I just feel that we could have packaged him up somehow and seen if we could market him during the trade period and then making the call if no bites.

Gaze is a smug bandwagon Hawthorn supporter who makes morning radio intolerable.

SEN is reporting that Hawthorn are looking for Fitzy to replace Roughead.  He is another guy who will be better for being in a high quality team.

He can enjoy some wins, heaven knows any player who battled away with the Dees during the hard times then let go, deserves everything the game can give him.

I fully understand and support why we let him go but he has always been one of my faves and would love for him to get a long run in the seniors with the Hawks.

Agree, battled hard IMO. Just as long as he doesn't kick a goal against us, I'll be happy.

Another VFL player that was on the list for far too long.

No animosity, but never good enough.

as long as he doesn't turn into another stefan martin

I think he might. Has great speed for a big bloke, and bot a bad mark. Facing the Hawk's elite mid field as a forward I think he might be very effective.

Good on him if he succeeds

He won't turn into a Stefan Martin. Martin had already shown a fair bit before he left particularly when used as the sole ruck. Fitz has really only shown he is a good VFL standard player.

I may be being harsh but if Hawthorn are honestly looking at Jack for a tall forward role I may have to reevaluate their chances of a 4peat.

  • PREVIEW: Gold Coast

The Gold Coast Suns find themselves outside of the top eight for the first time since Round 1 with pressure is mounting on the entire organisation. Their coach Damien Hardwick expressed his frustration at his team’s condition last week by making a middle-finger gesture on television that earned him a fine for his troubles. He showed his desperation by claiming that Fox should pick up the tab.  There’s little doubt the Suns have shown improvement in 2025, and their position on the ladder is influenced to some extent by having played fewer games than their rivals for a playoff role at the end of the season, courtesy of the disruption caused by Cyclone Alfred in March.  However, they are following the same trajectory that hindered the club in past years whenever they appeared to be nearing their potential. As a consequence, that Hardwick gesture should be considered as more than a mere behavioral lapse. It’s a distress signal that does not bode well for the Queenslanders. While the Suns are eager to remain in contention with the top eight, Melbourne faces its own crisis, which is similarly deep-seated but in a much different way. After recovering from a disappointing start to the season and nearing a return to respectability among its peer clubs, the Demons have experienced a decline in status, driven by the fact that while their form has been reasonable (see their performance against the ladder leader in the Kings Birthday match), their conversion in front of goal is poor enough to rank last in the competition. Furthermore, their opponents find them exceptionally easy to score against. As a result, they have effectively eliminated themselves from the finals race and are again positioned to finish in the bottom half of the ladder.

  • REPORT: Port Adelaide

Of course, it’s not the backline, you might argue and you would probably be right. It’s the boot studder (do they still have them?), the midfield, the recruiting staff, the forward line, the kicking coach, the Board, the interchange bench, the supporters, the folk at Casey, the head coach and the club psychologist  It’s all of them and all of us for having expectations that were sufficiently high to have believed three weeks ago that a restoration of the Melbourne team to a position where we might still be in contention for a finals berth when the time for the midseason bye arrived. Now let’s look at what happened over the period of time since Melbourne overwhelmed the Sydney Swans at the MCG in late May when it kicked 8.2 to 5.3 in the final quarter (and that was after scoring 3.8 to two straight goals in the second term).

  • CASEY: Essendon

Casey’s unbeaten run was extended for at least another fortnight after the Demons overran a persistent Essendon line up by 29 points at ETU Stadium in Port Melbourne last night. After conceding the first goal of the evening, Casey went on a scoring spree from about ten minutes in, with five unanswered majors with its fleet of midsized runners headed by the much improved Paddy Cross who kicked two in quick succession and livewire Ricky Mentha who also kicked an early goal. Leading the charge was recruit of the year, Riley Bonner while Bailey Laurie continued his impressive vein of form. With Tom Campbell missing from the lineup, Will Verrall stepped up to the plate demonstrating his improvement under the veteran ruckman’s tutelage. The Demons were looking comfortable for much of the second quarter and held a 25-point lead until the Bombers struck back with two goals in the shadows of half time. On the other side of the main break their revival continued with first three goals of the half. Harry Sharp, who had been quiet scrambled in the Demons’ first score of the third term to bring the margin back to a single point at the 17 minute mark and the game became an arm-wrestle for the remainder of the quarter and into the final moments of the last.
