Nathan Jones to undergo neck surgery

back injury, wasn't it?

But maybe neck related...

It was the first couple of vertebrae so I think it was classified as a neck injury; but I could be wrong... my memory isn't what it used to be.

Give it a rest Neeldy.

Rating a player with a letter is ridiculous. The facts are that he is a three time BNF winner, much loved by the supporters and has been our best player for a long time. Unfairly rated by 'supporters' like yourself, and the AFL in general.

IMO.

I was being facetious :)

He's A+ for me and always will be.

I want him to lead this club out of the darkness.

PS Neeldy brought us a once in a generation player...

Not a huge fan of the pain the neck headline, this is pretty serious stuff.

Really hoping for the best for Nathan's sake. The good news I guess is he's played through it so hopefully it's a more minor procedure to reduce pain, but either way anything neck related is full on.

The good news I guess is we can be really conservative as he's got the build up of preseasons to regain fitness quickly once his neck is ok.

Big test for our young leaders and other mature leaders to set the standard that Jonesy does over preseason.

I'm not surprised he's having neck surgery.

The only thing that surprises me is that he ISN'T having spinal surgery.

After most stoppages , he gets up last, after about three oppos. take their arms off his neck, and their knees out of his back. It's either a ball up, or holding the ball against him.. He just shakes his head in disbelief, then gets on with it. Somehow Sellwood throws himself at the ball like Nathan, and gets frees.

"Chunk" deserves a Brownlow for courage and persistence beyond that of most players in AFL history.

Does this mean his head is removed during the procedure?

Reminds me of an old British film i love called "Britainia Hospital" :)

Great film, but not as good as the first two in the trilogy, "If" and "O Lucky Man".

“MAN CARRYING ENTIRE FOOTBALL SIDE INJURES NECK"

News at eleven.

In all seriousness, Nathan Jones is and has been one of our brightest lights in a very dark period for the Club. He’s like a beautiful bald flower that grew out of a pot of dirt.

Acquired from sticking it out for the club and carrying a huge weight around it.

Those who knocked him /suggested he relinquish the captaincy are not the types you would want on your side in a war.

Sounds like this is his first experience of long rehab so will be a real challenge for him but of course if anyone's up for it it'll be him.

All the best Chunk!

Our skipper plans to be ok for rnd 1, 2016: http://www.melbournefc.com.au/news/2015-09-17/jones-certain-hell-play-in-round-one

A long recovery but he draws on Trengove and Petracca for inspiration during rehab.

He has clearly been under enormous physical stress for the whole of 2015. In some games it showed but there were never excuses, never apologies. Great example to get in there and play each week.

Warrior.

I'd be interested to know when this issue was known to the club medicos. Reading the article where he say he'll be playing rnd 1 but in his own words probably won't be 100%, if this issue was known any time before the seasons end I'd like to know why they didn't just put him away for the year and give him the surgery he needs.

Not trying to open a can of worms here but I'd be furious if they kept him playing knowing he'd have this long lay up over the off season.

Pates, from the article above:, it seems Jones injured himself preseason and 'regretted playing' rnd 2 vs GWS so the club knew quite early in 2015: “The doctors’ reports and their assumptions was that I had [injured] it previously, but the things I did in the weekend before the season [started] aggravated it and inflamed the area – that’s why I got the real bad nerve pain.”

An article on Jones and his captaincy:

http://www.melbournefc.com.au/news/2015-09-18/ill-be-a-better-captain-next-year-jones

His injury aside, Jones has identified the two things he really needs to improve on:

1. "...two years in the role – albeit in varying situations – would allow him to have a greater understanding of the key playing leadership role next year".

2. “I was reasonably happy with how I went … but I found myself struggling at times with the tags and that’s something I’ll really work on over pre-season.”

Our team needs better on field leadership so Jones improving this will really help us win/be more competitive in games.

Looking forward to Jones achieving these goals in 2016.

Given Jones’ track record at improving other areas of his game, I’ll back him to get better at these ones too.

regretted playing' rnd 2 vs GWS

Makes total sense.

It was another Nathan Jones out there V's GWS. I remember everyone couldn't believe how bad he was that game.

I recall he was rested in the forward pocket for the majority of the second half.

    REDEEM by Meggs

How will Mick Stinear and his dwindling list of fit and available Demons respond to last week’s 65-point capitulation to the Bombers, the team’s biggest loss in history?   As a minimum he will expect genuine effort from all of his players when Melbourne takes on the GWS Giants at Ikon Park this Thursday.  Happily, the ground remains a favourite Melbourne venue of players and spectators alike and will provide an opportunity for the Demons to redeem themselves. Injuries to star play

    EASYBEATS by Meggs

A beautiful sunny Friday afternoon, with a light breeze and a strong Windy Hill crowd set the scene, inviting one team to seize the day and take the important four points on offer. For the Demons it was not a good Friday, easily beaten by an all-time largest losing margin of 65 points.   Essendon threw themselves into action today, winning most of the contests and had three early goals with Daria Bannister on fire.  In contrast the Demons were dropping marks, hesitant in close and comm

    DEFUSE THE BOMBERS by Meggs

Last Saturday’s crushing loss to Fremantle, after being three goals ahead at three quarter time, should be motivation enough to bounce back for this very winnable Round 5 clash at Windy Hill. A first-time venue for the Melbourne AFLW team, this should be a familiar suburban, windy, footy environment for the players.   Essendon were brave and competitive last week against ladder leader Adelaide at Sturt’s home ground. A familiar name, Maddison Gay, was the Bombers best player with

    BLOW THE SIREN by Meggs

Fremantle hosted the Demons on a sunny 20-degree Saturdayafternoon winning the toss and electing to defend in the first quarter against the 3-goal breeze favouring the Parry Street end. There was method here, as this would give the comeback queens, the Dockers, last use of the breeze. The Melbourne Coach had promised an improved performance, and we did start better than previous weeks, winning the ball out of the middle, using the breeze advantage and connecting to the forwards.

    GETAWAY by Meggs

Calling all fit players. Expect every available Melbourne player to board the Virgin cross-continent flight to Perth for this Round 4 clash on Saturday afternoon at Fremantle Oval. It promises to be keenly contested, though Fremantle is the bookies clear favourite.  If we lose, finals could be remoter than Rottnest Island especially following on from the Dees 50-point dismantlement by North Melbourne last Sunday.  There are 8 remaining matches, over the next 7 weeks.  To Meggs’

    DRUBBING by Meggs

With Casey Fields basking in sunshine, an enthusiastic throng of young Demons fans formed a guard of honour for the evergreen and much admired 75-gamer Paxy Paxman. As the home team ran out to play, Paxy’s banner promised that the Demons would bounce back from last week’s loss to Brisbane and reign supreme.   Disappointingly, the Kangaroos dominated the match to win by 50 points, but our Paxy certainly did her bit.  She was clearly our best player, sweeping well in defence.

    GARNER STRENGTH by Meggs

In keeping with our tough draw theme, Week 3 sees Melbourne take on flag favourites, North Melbourne, at Casey Fields this Sunday at 1:05pm.  The weather forecast looks dry, a coolish 14 degrees and will be characteristically gusty.  Remember when Casey Fields was considered our fortress?  The Demons have lost two of their past three matches at the Field of Dreams, so opposition teams commute down the Princes Highway with more optimism these days.  The Dees held the highe

    ALLY’S FIELDS by Meggs

It was a sunny morning at Casey Fields, as Demon supporters young and old formed a guard of honour for fan favourite and 50-gamer Alyssa Bannan.  Banno’s banner stated the speedster was the ‘fastest 50 games’ by an AFLW player ever.   For Dees supporters, today was not our day and unfortunately not for Banno either. A couple of opportunities emerged for our number 6 but alas there was no sizzle.   Brisbane atoned for last week’s record loss to North Melbourne, comprehensively out

    GOOD MORNING by Meggs

If you are driving or training it to Cranbourne on Saturday, don’t forget to set your alarm clock. The Melbourne Demons play the reigning premiers Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields this Saturday, with the bounce of the ball at 11:05am.  Yes, that’s AM.   The AFLW fixture shows deference to the AFL men’s finals games.  So, for the men it’s good afternoon and good evening and for the women it’s good morning.     The Lions were wounded last week by 44 points, their highest ever los
