FAREWELL DANIEL CROSS

I was sad to see him go and thought we had made a mistake.

We lost Melksham, Salem, and Lumumba to suspension and injury. Garland has proved Stevethemanjordan correct and Dunn has mysteriously fallen completely out of favour after a good season last year.

Yet we still managed to uncover Hunt and Wagner. Plus White is waiting in the wings.

There is no doubt it was the right desision to move him on.

It is your opinion, the role he was playing didn't require him to do a lot of kicking, his role was to float around pissing on fires which he did exceptionally well

One last time for the simpleton like yourself. The question was put forward that Should Daniel Cross stayed on another year to help down back to utilize his kicking skills which i pointed out that no it wouldn't because, 

1. His penetration and skill level was starting to decline and on the back half of the year was kicking floaters and turning it over.

2. Him staying on another year would mean less games for a Josh Wagner and Jayden Hunt. It stalls development. 

And yes he was good at intercepting marks and chopping off forward entries. But so is Josh Wagner who is starting to show those glimpse.

I have great admiration for Cross and was filthy he was let go but now hindsight is that club made right choice.

I still dont understand why you are being a spoilt little brat over this. I'm a massive Cross fan and was NOT 'denigrate' towards him at all.

I had a chat with Crossy at training over summer. He had been working on the side oval with Tracc doing run throughs. Asked him if it was good to be back working at the club and he said he was loving it. Big smile. Clearly the disappointment of not getting another year didn't last long.

With the rise of Hunt and Wagner, we made the right call. And the competition across the backline will increase next year as Salem, Milkshake and (hopefully) Lumumba come back into the mix.

I would've been very happy for him to stay on but if you look at how Grimes has been an emergency for much of this year it's not hard to imagine Crossy being in and out of the side. We've had emergence from some good young talent and while we might not get the consistency we got with Cross I think we'll benefit from the development and those young guys will benefit from having Crossy as a mentor.

It was the right decision at the time and it remains the right decision. Any player who is not part of our next finals side is on borrowed time, irrespective of their qualities as a player and person.

Cross was one of the least selfish players I think the AFL has ever known.

He may have been personally disappointed with his career coming to an end, but my god I doubt he holds a single grudge and can't see that him leaving has allowed a number of young players to develop a year earlier. 

If he had such a massive problem with the decision, he wouldn't still be working at the club.

For once we made the right decision, and were able to continue to utilize Crossy in the best possible way.

If you wanna bring up past mistakes made with senior players, why don't we reopen the old wound that is James McDonald... now that was one awful mess!

Interesting - To this day I am not sure if it was mistake or if it wasn't - all i know it was handled appallingly

Probably the right decision to move him on, but we could use his experience, cool head and superb contested marking in our defensive 50 these days.

Massive mistake, ripped the cultural heart out of the club and he still had a couple of years left to give. After he left we were left with a massive void of experience to help guide the young players and the youngsters suffered as a result. We have a similar issue now but we have more experienced leaders around the club now, even they aren't paying in the firsts.

Fawning over players from behind the fence at training with autograph book in hand is not even in the same ball park as Dazzle playing alongside Crossy and then having social beers with him afterwards. Like comparing Asti Riccadonna with a well aged Heathcote red.

Wish i played alongside him Moon but it was a game earlier on the year. Tore our midfield a new [censored] to be perfectly honest.

I think the biggest difference was that Crossy had approached the club asking them for a response on his playing future in the next week or so. The club may have done things a bit differently if given a different time frame but with the situation being what it was, they were honest and said no. The fact that Crossy returned to the club after the decision (after a period of understandable disappointment) shows that the club handled it right.
I have to say this is a rumour but from what I have heard is that Junior was told on a flight to (or from?) Adelaide that next week would be his last game. No consultation, no time to respond. Against a backdrop of constant veteran delistings, it was like throwing petrol on a bonfire; basically telling the group that loyalty, record or effort didn't really amount to a pile of beans. Like a draft horse who had outlived it's usefulness, we will put a slug in your head as soon as we deem your time is up.
I think the turning point on how we treat long term servants changed to some extent when Flash retired. As far as I can tell, he was fully informed and was given a decent farewell upon leaving.

On a plane ride? Most times someone is going to be let go (sacked) in any line of work, unless you have arsed up magnificently, they will do you the courtesy of of sitting you down at a pre arranged meeting to tell you why you are being let go (at least if you are a legitimate organization).
