Didn't see much of the game, but I expect the armchair experts will be gloating about their knowing far more about the game than our selectors, though no doubt had we gone in with one ruckman (and the whole world knows that Dawes won't / ?cant ruck) and the ruck stats had looked as bad as they have, then they would have said 'why didn't we have two rucks'.

I haven't seen much of the game but we were nearly level on clearances (37-40), CPs (116-121) and the inside 50s weren't the disaster they often are in blow outs (45-53).

It would appear to me, then, that West Coast were simply a lot cleaner with the ball going forward (34 scoring shots from 53 inside 50s (which is a score from 65% of each entry) compared to 15 from our 45 (which is 33%)). This is easily explained, really: we went in too tall, exacerbated by losing Brayshaw and therefore not being able to sub someone out, and we are carrying too many substandard players (masked by the Geelong win but exposed by a better side in West Coast) which meant we turned it over too much and couldn't get clean ball inside 50.

I'll say it again. How good was that non-mark from Watts? If the Umpire wasn't a useless maggoty turd that would have been in the running for MOTY.

Seriously? 15 possessions, 7 marks and 3 shots at goal isn't a stinker at the best of times, let alone when you're 20 y/o playing in your 10th game.

32 scoring shots to 15 on only 8 less inside 50's is woeful. While WCE were kicking low darts into their forwards, we were kicking slow, high floaters.

Also, our ability to tackle but still sllow the Eagles player to get their arms free and dispose of the ball was horrendous tonight.

Tonight showed how thin our midfield is. We need 2 x A grade mids and about 4 x B+ mids. Preferably 24 yrs old with 60 games under their belt. Half of these this off season, the other half next. And we need to minimise our injury list. Hopefully Brayshaw comes up ok.

Playing WC really emphasizes how bad our delivery into 50 is. They have superb technique with those low, hard, accurate passes to the forwards. We on the other hand invariably hit them too high and too slow and give the forwards no chance to take the mark. We desperately need to iron that out of our game. If we gave decent service to the forwards, the forwards would have an incentive to lead rather than sit back and try to take a contested mark and we might actually kick a decent score consistently.

Thought the difference was ball use, we butchered it far too often,turnovers after all the hard work to get it.

Losing Brayshaw so early was a blow,but I thought Neal Bullen had a good game.

The dropped chest marks and undisciplined free kicks gifting them goals didn't help either.

Another pre season and we will be better equipped to tackle these top sides.

He was probably in our top 4 or 5. Led hard and made a contest, missed 4 or 5 contested marks that he normally takes but sweaty ball didn't suit. Had the shots on goal (4 I think) and considering the delivery, that is very good. Did what he could.

Dawes was heavily contested as was 2-1 Hogan, so impressed by WC grasscutters inside 50.

Our disposal going forward was the problem, and then we allowed them to transition the ball from these entries far too easily. We went too tall and we couldn't put enough pressure on. Garlett laid 7 tackles though so at least he had a dip in that regard.

Disappointed with the fade out, but, we know where we are at, we know the players we don't need and we can clearly see where the improvement will come from. Let's keep things in perspective with everything that's happened and look towards next week.

No, he stunk it up a fair bit. The reason his stats are still decent is that he still fought like hell even though he was having a stinker. He should have had three goals but missed two sitters, he couldn't buy a mark for most of the first half. His hands were like bricks. He was throwing himself about like Howe and letting his man run off while he was picking himself up.

Importantly though he never stopped fighting. When he couldn't mark the ball in the forward half he led up the wing and got a few easy marks between wing and HB just to get a feel for the ball. He knew he was having a bad day and worked his ass off to push through. I love what that says about him as a player.

Should have left Spencer out and played Fitz back on Sinclair allowing him to go into the ruck when Sinclair did same.

He missed 4 or 5 easy marks that he would normally take. His timing was off. His kicking at goal was off. He did some good things further up the ground but generally I thought he was off. I never doubted that he wa trying hard. He gives 100% and gets frustrated with himsel, but as I said, to me, he looked like he had missed a month of footy
