Who is the best team in the league?

There's no excuses for some of the performances we've delivered this year, but it's worth noting that the teams we've lost to have been the best teams so far this year (and will probably all play finals). They are:

GWS (5th)

Adelaide (4th)

Fremantle (1st)

Sydney (3rd)

Hawthorn (6th)

Given that we've all now had a look at these teams, who do we think will go deep into September?

After the Freo game, I was convinced that they would win this year's flag. Their midfield was so strong, and Nathan Fyfe was an absolute beast. But after watching the Hawks yesterday, it's hard to see them not winning the flag again. They converted almost every turnover into a scoring opportunity, and found so much space in their forward line. Sure, we looked like a dumb footy team. But they looked like a very smart footy team.

The other highlight for me (if you can call it that) would be GWS and their pace. That 14-goal patch was about as one-sided as I've seen in years (and we've seen a lot of one-sided contests). They absolutely ran us off our legs, and were really bold in attack. Dylan Shiel will become a superstar, if he isn't one already.

A very tough three weeks.

For mine:

Fremantle

Sydney

Hawthorn

Then a fairly even pack after that; but the above three teams are talented, well coached, work as a unit and are big bodied and battled hardened. Two of these will feature in the last week of September.

Don't judge Hawthorn on the back of how they play against us. Judge them on the entirety of the season so far. They've lost to Essendon and GWS.

Freo are the team to beat. They've never been stronger than they are right now. Remember what they did to West Coast? Everyone wrote West coast off after that game, yet look at them now. West Coast aren't that bad. Freo are just very, very good.

I want to see how GWS play interstate against top teams in the latter half of the season. GC started off similarly strong last season. But GWS have looked scary. I hate them.

Freo by a country mile.

Freo have the slight edge over Hawthorn at the moment on form, but on paper hawthorn are an embarrassment of riches. If hawthorn are all fit and firing then they have it. I would like to see freo get the flag this season.

    TROUBLE by The Oracle

Situated roughly in Australia's geographic centre, Alice Springs has for many years been a troubled town suffering from intermittent crime waves, particularly among its younger residents. There was a time a little while ago when things were so bad that some even doubted the annual AFL game in the town would proceed.  Now, the hope is that this Sunday’s Melbourne vs Fremantle encounter will bring joy to the residents of the town and that through the sport and the example of the participants,

    GALLANT by KC from Casey

The world “gallant” is not one that is readily acceptable to losing teams in our game of football so when it was used in the context of the Casey Demons’ loss to Sandringham in yesterday’s match at Casey Fields, it left a bitter taste in the mouth.  The Demons went into the game against the St Kilda affiliated Zebras with the advantage of playing on their home turf (not that this has been a major asset in 2024) and with very little else going in their favour. The Saints have close to a full
