Could have had him for a draft pick years ago, he trained with us and we promised him we'd take him and then didn't last minute (I forget who we went with instead). We are lucky he is even taking our calls.

Benell I think it was.

Sloane too

Sloane never trained with us mate...

He was a very big saints supporter as a kid and apparently still has a soft spot for them

Would both Sloane AND Dangerfield leave... ? I'm pretty sure one will go but I don't think the Crows would allow both to leave. With Thompson's impending retirement it would leave a major hole in their midfield.

But I wouldn't say no mind you, he would be a terrific get for the club.

We didn't want Thompson to leave either. In the end, there's only so much a club can do.

Different era, in that Thompson left when there was no free agency and we were very proactive about it, but I do agree with the sentiments.

Would you swap our first pick (let's say for argument's sake that it's pick 5) for Sloane?

26 years old at the start of 2016.

I would.

For a B grader? I wouldn't.

The Ox just said Sloane to saints and take that to the bank.

Interesting.

They will want Dunstan in return.

Will the Saints deal?

He's on the cusp, but a B grader, IMO.

He's certainly not the bloke I'd be giving up a top 5 pick for.

B grader? Wtf?

Agree with 'Adam', I wouldn't be handing over a top 5 for him.

For a player coming on 26 you would be looking to pick up as a free agent which he isn't, then no or like for like player.

If we're trading high picks then we're looking for a player with a few years in the system around 21 - 23 max.

Not for Dunstan. That's culture killing stuff. They have already been comparing him to Lenny Hayes.

Well he's not up to Tyson's level... ;)

Wowee. You get the opportunity to pick up Rory Sloane you ask how high. Hypothetically Pick 5, done. He's a star. Saints will be very, very happy indeed.

A lot hinges on Dangerfield I think, if he goes it frees up a lot of extra $, having said that it might not all be about money for Sloane. If he does want to return to Melbourne the fact that he has to be traded is important (unless the Saints finish last and the PSD is an option - which I don't think it will be). I imagine if it is both us and the Saints in the mix then it will depend on what the Crows will want in compensation. (I think we'd be better placed to offer up our first round draft pick than the rebuilding Saints - but maybe not) If he does come to Melbourne he can always go surfing with Nat and Gerard.

He's B+ I reckon. Below the Ablett, Fyfe, Pendlebury, Selwood, MItchell level (A grade) but on a par with the rest (including our very own Nathan Jones). He's an absolute gun.

At 26, you'd expect 100 games from him barring a catastrophe.

What are the chances of getting 100 games and a B+ player with pick 5? It's a lottery and all you can really do is hope for one (well... you hope for A grade and 250 games, but that's bloody rare).

That's who they will ask for, they won't want a pick for Sloane. I'm not saying the Saints will do that deal and they might not be in a position to deal.

Who will we give up, or should we offer up?

Thought id start a thread on something i received today. An old high school friend of mine just started a digital media job at AFL house, sent me an email saying that the word going around strongly is that we along with St Kilda are two clubs pushing really hard for his signature at the end of the year. Roosy and Goodwin are massive fans of him and rate his leadership highly. The signs are that its a possible chance that he might return home as his GF is starting a new job in Melbourne aswell.

The Simon Goodwin factor could be huge in this.

Watch this space.

we really need his run & dash. his maturity would be fantastic as this club climbs its way back to power.

offer him the 40 jumper & 5 years of $$$$$; the Roryng 40's blowing thru the AFL again. :)

Sloane went @ Pick44

we went with Bennell instead @ Pick 35

to think we could have had both Sloane & Jetta.

lets make amends Dees, go hard or go home Melbounre. prove we are serious,,, get him

before we win onfield; we have to start beating our opponents, off-field.

But I think you back yourself in to draft a 250 game A grader, otherwise what are we doing? We need A graders. If our recruiting department think there's a ten year A grade prospect in the top 5, I'd rather go for them. Unless of course there's a chance we can get Shiel, Prestia or Treloar, which I can't see happening.

Given that our other early picks were Jack Watts, Sam Blease and James Strauss, the entire draft is starting to look even more of a disaster than the Tom Scully one that succeeded it.

What concerns me is the story I once heard about our dealings with Sloane and his family and certain promises that might have been made at the time which might even rule us out of contention if we wanted him now, some seven years after the fact.

Can't blame him if that's the case. Some might call it petty but at that point it was a dream to play AFL footy and sounds as though we really shafted him... and ourselves. Wouldn't blame him at all if that was a reason for not entertaining our offers (even though different people are in charge now).

RETURN TO NORMAL by Whispering Jack

One of my prized possessions is a framed, autographed guernsey bearing the number 31 worn by my childhood hero, Melbourne’s champion six time premiership player Ronald Dale Barassi who passed away on 16 September 2023, aged 87. The former captain who went on to a successful coaching career, mainly with other clubs, came back to the fold in his later years as a staunch Demon supporter who often sat across the way from me in the Northern Stand of the MCG cheering on the team. Barassi died the
