I never realised the real difference between AFL footballers and us mere mortals, until one day at training on the G, Henry Coles, a 170 cm ( if he was in high heels ) rover, said he would show me a few things. We stood together at one end and an injured player at the other end about 35-40 metres away was kicking the ball to us. I am 175cms and a former hack footballer, but was only about 26 at the time and thought I could get the odd possession against Henry. What came next absolutely stunned me and demonstrated just how good these guys are. No matter where I stood, in front, to the side, behind or simply leading to the kicker, Henry got the ball and stopped me even touching it. He used his body and smarts to move me out of position, or just get around me or simply beat me to the pill. I just couldn't get near it.

I was exhausted and felt like his [censored],as he monstered me. At the end I shook his hand and told him that I would never doubt the ability needed to play AFL. BTW Henry could also hand them out in games when needed. He was old school tough as nails, but a nice bloke.

In addition to the list there is an army of volunteers who assist the club each year. Handing out scarves, making the banner, assisting with membership ringing members who haven't renewed (remember that when someone rings and asks don't dump on a volunteer), selling raffle tickets and a variety of other functions. HR protocols point out volunteer responsibilities and a Working with Children check. These numbers would swell the list of staff and roles even more. AFL club management is huge and expensive and PJ is the master.

That's actually a really funny coincidence because just a couple of days back i was talking a fella who was talking about who he played with as junior. He mentioned Laurie Fowler (one of my favorites) i was trying to remember the other stocky little tough bugger we had in that same team. For the life of me i couldn't recall his name, which is so annoying. It was Henry Coles i was trying to remember. Thanks. Good player. Was his number 9?

Edit; no of course Fowler was 9, Coles was 13 - thanks Demon Wiki (what an amazing site that is, i just love it).

According to Wikipeadia:'Coles career deteriorated from 1978 onwards, playing only four games in 1979 and seven games in his final season of 1980. His VFL career ended in disgrace when he was fined $600 and suspended for a week after getting into a fight with his captain-coach, Carl Ditterich. He played his last game for Melbourne in round 18 against North Melbourne.'

Getting into afight with yout captain coach is never a good career move. Brave man though. Big Carl was one scary dude when angry

Basically in todays game much of the research is done via statistical analysis and countless hours of breaking down potential recruits on-field and off-field strengths and weaknesses. Think Champion Data type info.

Often its games from all around Australia at all levels including draft camp results from around the country.

They do a ton of video work and break each potential recruits games apart. Also another major component is "phantom drafting analysis" - basically trying to pick where players will land so you achieve the best suite of picks.

Another element that has really moved forward in recent years is ranking trades vs keeping the picks and selecting draftees - especially with the advent of free agency this area cannot be under estimated.

Plus lets not forget the old phycology testing - its huge work load collecting all the statistical analysis, coordinating all the software then delivery all the analysis in a readable comparable format.

I was standing a few feet from Henry when he was challenging Big Carl to step outside. He would have been giving away at least 26cms and 25 kilos. It wouldn't have worried him though.

Thanks T&W, very helpful advice.

No problems - should also add your tech guys acts like a conduit from your recruiters to your development staff. ie

Recruiter might say " I really like this kid" tech guy will come back with strengths and weakness often both video & statistical analysis - then your development staff come in and say " well we are confident we can improve the following weakness etc" or " maybe they cant"

Coach may go to recruiters and say " I want somebody to play role x ie small forward" - recruiters will go and create list of who is available - then again your tech guys will create full packages on the listed players sometimes including interview notes and information.

What you are trying to avoid is placing all the power of a decision in the hands of one person - the more information you have the better quality decisions you can make.

I think you will find it was The Prince that said that. Dawes joined in 2012 before Tammy arrived.
