We have to win contested ball to win the game, they will destroy us on the outside like gws did

Because when the said person, who sees himself as an authority on the game just because he regularly attends training, starts making snide comments of a personal nature, I'll tear apart his arguments till the cows come home. Just like he'd derail his own training reports by getting personal, he does the same with match previews and reviews.

We all have differing opinions, and sometimes we gets things right, and sometimes we get things wrong. But in baseball terms, he's batting .001.

don't think he sees himself as any more of an authority than you seem to think you are, mo

your constant nit picking is a constant irritation

you need to ignore him if you can't cope with different opinions and give the rest of us a break

sadly i think you will probably decide to ignore this advice instead

we were paying 9.50 against the Crows and we got within 4 goals

we were paying 3.50 last week and we won by 5 goals

this week we are paying 4.85

will we be surprising everyone again, or is it a case that they should not be surprised

I think GWS at $2.45 is worth a look against the Eagles. Eagles lost to the dogs, beat Carlton, got flogged by Freo(don't worry about the final score, Freo had put the cue away knowing they had Sydney the following week) then they beat the Lions. They are the crows of last week. They've beaten no one of value.

agreed, those odds seem way off the mark for mine, Freo had the Eagles by 11 goals at half time they are ordinary at best

I disagree. Most on here got excited by the selection of our round 1 team because we'd seen what the 4 players mentioned had to offer plus 2 or 3 others, and understood that for Melbourne to get better, these guys had to be replaced. Personally, based on how we were structuring and our match sims during preseason training, I thought that Hogan, JKH, Kent, plus Garlett and Salem, were locks for round 1. I was also hopeful that at least 2 of Brayshaw, Petracca, ABN and Stretch may be considered for round 1, and barring injury to Petracca and ABN, that may have occured.

Of the 4 mentioned, I still think that Grimes still has alot to offer, but I've given up on the other 3 becoming regular AFL players.

......what's this an authoritative tone

but you didn't mention Newton, Frost and Vandenburg. Brayshaw playing every game since R1 was also very unlikely. Not arguing for the sake of it, just saying that if you went back to a pre-NAB thread naming best22s, I'm sure you'd find a hell of a lot of people other than Saty naming those 4 players (Grimes on the field, 1 or 2 of the others on the bench). Don't get me wrong, I agree with your assessment of these players and am thrilled that these newbies have stepped up to replace them, and we are a better side for it, but its a bit rough to sledge Saty on that basis.

No it's not, I have had the temerity to disagree with the Mo-ster again, I am still waiting for his definition of how a player impacts a game of AFL, I would try it as I am the authority on things like that, but I asked first

I'm bullish about our chances on the weekend and I think we can give Freo a bit of a scare... but I hope we don't forget that Freo are a brilliant side and, if the inevitable 7 goal loss happens, that we don't lose sight of that fact. It would be very, very easy to slam the side after a loss like that but we need to remember where we are coming from and just who we are playing. As long as the side puts in the exact same effort as last Friday night then I don't think we can fault them.

I'll be quietly confident that we can give it a real crack but won't be disappointed if Freo show us why they are a few rungs above us in class and skill.

Nailed it perfectly.

I tried baseball but I didn't like it, everytime I swung the racquet, I fell off the horse

Jetta is a huge loss when we have to contain Walters AND Ballantyne.

Tyson may be a huge loss when we have to counter Barlow, Mundy, Fyfe, Neale, Hill, etc.

Kent is a huge loss when we have to contain Mzungu, Ibbotson, Pearce, Suban, Johnson, etc.

There is too much of what we really need missing this week.

Getting more used to the idea of Fitzpatrick as Jamar's backup while defending against the resting rucks - if Zac Clarke & Sandi play forward when they're not on the ball, we simply don't have another physical match-up for them. Unless the plan is for someone like Dunn to run off them as much as possible, which would be a big gamble.

Spencer playing most of the game in defence would just be too great a risk. Tho' Frost could have been perfect for this game.

I don't like T.Mac on Pav, not to start anyway. He won't be able to risk running off Pav, but he should be able to run off Tabberner. If our recent games against Freo are any guide, we'll need everything we can muster to avoid getting strangled, and this will include T.Mac's run out of defence. Considering Garland's been in such great form, I'd like him to get first crack at the Pav, though it does takes him away from the resting mids. It may have to be Dunn.

Fitzpatrick is not in the mix, its Jamar solo or Spencer & Jamar

What junk?

He has been out of form for 3 weeks and if hes not getting the ball hes useless.

Well let's just say he's getting enough scoring involvements to keep his spot.

I'd like us to crack 100 tackles this weekend. Really bring a tenacity to Freo and hopefully our decision making will be a lot better this week.

There are big problems with all three of those options. The best option - Frost, who was brought in to cover just this situation - isn't available.

Jamar solo would be far too great a risk. Sandi was largely responsible for Freo being 48 points in front of Sydney at half time.

Whoever supports Jamar will be on the ball for 20% game time, and in the back pocket against Clarke for 60-70% game time. Neither of them fill anyone with confidence in that scenario. Spencer is better on the ball, but in defence??

I think we need a balance. We need to break even in uncontested ball too as we did against Adelaide. They're quicker than us, but their pace doesn't worry me as much as GWS's does.

The other way to look at it is that TMac is a running machine, if we force Pav to try to keep him with him going the other way, his aging legs will be run ragged, and TMac could setup a lot of rebound play while simultaneously wearing out the Pav. He's also one of the best spoilers in the comp and should hardly let any space get between and his man so Pav's contested marking should be just about nullified

Or, rather than get into a d*ck-measuring contest about who is or isn't an authority on the game, or who does or doesn't understand footy ...you could just ignore them.

I am still very concerned about our ruck stocks and we will be smashed on Sunday

Jamar probably his last year.

Gawn the ruck game has changed and he is nowhere good enough around the ground

Spencer not skilled enough. King he his in Casey seconds.

Fitzpatrick cant ruck.

We have given a good ruckman away in Martin. Every time he rucked on his own with us he starred.

When Jamar came back in he was second ruck and didnt play well. Eventually he asked to me moved on.

I really wish we had him now! I believe we will trade for a ready made Ruck at years end

Who besides Leuenberger should we target?

Is it just me.. Or has anyone ever lsr noticed Tyson has been getting caught holding the ball alot?

I noticed and posted the same in the post match forum

He looks a little rushed in his disposal to me. Maybe he is carrying an injury concern.

Tysons holding the ball issues aren't injury related, he did it last year, it's just some technical stuff, he finds space in tight which is great but probably Looks to do a little too much at the moment

After a great season last year, he is now being targeted by the opposition.

He was great in and under, but now I think maybe the time to spend a bit more time outside.

Bring in Riley to do the hard stuff at the bottom of the packs. He didn't get the name PIG DOG for nothing.

Tyson is just going through what Nathan Jones went through in his first years.. with more experience and a bigger body he won't get caught so often. I said back then that Jonesy must have been under orders to back himself so he could develop into a hard midfielder, the short term negative was that he gave away frees but now he's become a gem. It's the only way for Tyson (and Viney) to learn

Think you are right; he looks for the perfect option rather than going with his first.

Daniel Currie at North might be another to look at. Can't break in with Goldy playing such good footy.

RETURN TO NORMAL by Whispering Jack

One of my prized possessions is a framed, autographed guernsey bearing the number 31 worn by my childhood hero, Melbourne’s champion six time premiership player Ronald Dale Barassi who passed away on 16 September 2023, aged 87. The former captain who went on to a successful coaching career, mainly with other clubs, came back to the fold in his later years as a staunch Demon supporter who often sat across the way from me in the Northern Stand of the MCG cheering on the team. Barassi died the
