I hope to see the development of our list as a whole particularly our young but still only potential guns.   It is all about the team not the individual despite the focus on Hogan. Like all supporters I want Hogan to stay but not at all cost. The club has to develop a team and manage its list and contracts/remuneration in a sensible and professional manner. It's not much point having a gun like Jesse if we lose our midfield because of salary issues resulting from overcompensating one player. It's why team success is so important over the next 2 years. If we have success if will all work out.

I'd be surprised if he wanted to leave, his choice.

One thing is for sure, it's officially time to panic!!

I'd been planning to wait until a disappointing loss, where JH trudges off the ground without smiling.

But now's a good time too!

The official rumormongers are at work remember.

No one wants Melbourne to succeed.

I'm intrigued why ?

Regrettably, looks like he is 'going, going, gone'

Better enjoy the next 44 games..........

Way too early to come to this  MD. If he puts off talks this time NEXT year then Im with you. What it does do is underline what a massive year this is going to be for our club. We have to either make or get close to the finals.

Putting off talks until the end of the season almost always spells trouble, although luckily this scenario is different to the previous examples of it.

Whether it's smart for Jesse or not (and it probably is), this is NOT good news to be reading as a fan on the eve of another season. Let's be honest about that.

I think he'll stay, he signed an extension not that long ago, but if his manager trots out the same line and he's unsigned 12 months from now I think we all know what's going to happen.

Doesn't sound like a long-term contract to me.

If we're offering him $700K we're lunatics. Don't turn around and [censored] when his manager puts talks off for the season.

Where did the 700k figure come from?

Still trying to work out which word for censored.

I'd be more worried if his managers first name was Ben.

I'd be more worried if it was his last yr if his contract.

If we r in the same position this time next yr we r in trouble.

Signing a long term contract 9 months before a CBA would be extremely foolish when you are the talent that is Jesse Hogan.

Hell, even the great Yze Magic would put contract talks on hold!!!

Not ideal for my stress levels, but makes perfect sense

If he's worth a million a year now, just imagine what he will be worth this time next year. He has two years left. If he signs with a year to go, that's pretty good.

Here is hoping we start getting our [censored] together on the field. It's the only way to keep our good players, not just Jesse.

100% reasonable and sensible decision by Jesse, his management and the MFC.  I would wager that there wouldn't be a single sound-minded Demonlander who wouldn't make the same decision if faced with the same predicament.

With his contract in place until the end of the 2017 season he would be absolutely insane to sign something at this stage unless it was the largest contract ever offered. He has to wait. The club are obviously wanted to sign him up but he is wise to put off the talks until at least the end of this season. If he has a great season and kicks over fifty the club will have to offer him something more substantial than what they are offering now. I don't like the speculation and would be devastated if we lost him, but the future strength of this club must be built on more than just one star.

Absolutely... Freo pays him 1.2 million over 6 years..gets to go home to his mates and his old house next to the beach.

good post, but the sad reality is that if he does in fact it leave it will just about be curtains for the club. Do you realise how many of our already-diminishing supporter base are just hanging on by a thread after all we have been through? They won't be able to see your logic through the emotion and nobody could blame them. A huge number will simply give the game away if we lose a superstar after waiting decades for one to come along

He would have been offered something ridiculous by us, so given he has put off talks, that says he's gone. As if we wouldn't have offered him $10mill over 10 years or even more. Really disappointing. I'll find it very difficult watching him run around this season.

Some of your neuroses are showing again people.

If we want to keep players of his ilk then acting like he will leave will not help.

He has 2 years left FCS.

Some of you are so effing embarrassing...

Start winning some games and offer him his rightful amount and he will stick around to play with the talent we have surrounded him, and he has bonded, with.

PS. I have talked about this previously but the AFL salary cap is about to have the biggest jump in history - FYI.

Read into that what you will, or just continue to hand-wring.

Jesse is doing the right thing with new bargaining agreement in the pipeline.  He has only played 20 games, I am not panicking because we will have Roos, Jackson and Goody who will do everything in their power to sign him to the club long term.  Peter Jacksons most important task before he leaves us is to sign up all our young stars on long term contracts.  Otherwise all his work to date will be in vain.

in PJ we trust!

RETURN TO NORMAL by Whispering Jack

One of my prized possessions is a framed, autographed guernsey bearing the number 31 worn by my childhood hero, Melbourne’s champion six time premiership player Ronald Dale Barassi who passed away on 16 September 2023, aged 87. The former captain who went on to a successful coaching career, mainly with other clubs, came back to the fold in his later years as a staunch Demon supporter who often sat across the way from me in the Northern Stand of the MCG cheering on the team. Barassi died the
