This post has been designed for one specific purpose: to congratulate the MFC for creating a great match day atmosphere. Those who have followed my posts (and to that I must say poor you), you will know that I have been critical of how we have handled pre match and post match entertainment. Let's not retread old ground but you all know what I am talking about.
Yesterday was bloody brilliant on that front.

1) The bells tolling before we came out was magnificent and in the future might sound foreboding for those who play us. They did segue into the 'Grand Old Flag' a bit quickly but I loved that.

2) The interview with Watts on the ground was great as well. The crowd was clearly on cloud nine and to hear from Jack over the PA was even better. How good must it have made him feel to receive the love and adoration of the masses rather than their hisses and catcalls?

3) The bugler was, and I can't believe I am typing this, used perfectly yesterday. He was sent back to the cheer squad to play the song on his trumpet when it was clear we were certainties.
4) The newly installed LED fences helped but I also loved the 'Game Over' on the fence when we won. It had a nice tinge of arrogance that we have lacked in previous years.
5) The air guitaring Demon on the scoreboard was amusing as well. It took me back to the days when channel 7 had those animations jump on to the screen when certain teams won. That was a cherished part of my childhood for sure.
PJ said we were going to rebrand the club and I would say they have kicked a fair few goals thus far. Along with the new ad, I am pretty bloody pleased!
Keep it up boys!

I can't help but agree with all that you have said! I turned to my friend before the start of the match yesterday and said to her this is the most pumped I have felt in years before the start of the match. The bells and the music as the boys ran onto the grand was awesome and the make some noise for the demons banners going around the ground as they ran out were great as well! I loved the whole thing, felt like our home game for the first time in years. Well Done Demons!!

Spot on Colin. It was fantastic yesterday.

Extra kudos to the club for hiring a guy with a brilliant mullet - he was helping out during the warm up by kicking the ball out to the players, and it was seriously a special mullet. Felt like a good omen heading into the game. He needs to be there every week.

I have been banging on a lot this summer about the match day experience. I thought yesterday was spot on. Superb. The bells tolling was sensational and really got me going. Hats off MFC.

I don't mean to be negative, coz yesterday was about as perfect a day at the footy as I have in years, but I thought the Robbie Flower thing coulda been done a little better. Could hardly hear robbo interviewing brad flower and it was a pretty rushed video presentation. But glad we honoured him and did something to recognise the greatest MFC player ever

Bloody AFL live pass cut out yesterdays celebrations and even singing the song in the rooms! If anyone has video of the 5 minutes after the siren, I would be extremely greatful

Keep the bells, what a way to get everyone pumped up and psyche out the opposition.Reminded me of the Undertaker's entrance from the WWE.

Shudder to think how big Collingwood's or Hawthorn's will be.

We did have the 'make some noise' graphics up on the screen which I don't have a problem with so long as the are put up on the scoreboard at appropriate times. The Collingwood equivalent that is played at their home games is bloody annoying. They constantly pipe in crowd noise and play it after every goal. It was apropos for us at 3 quarter time but don't overdo it MFC (not suggesting they are but just a friendly reminder).

For those that live interstate and did not see or experience this- Was the bells from the song Hells Bells (ACDC?)

Hells Bells was the first time I've enjoyed hearing AC/DC since I was about 14. It was perfect.

It's nice to see some attempts to make the experience better. Hells Bells was a massive tick. Interview after the game was a tick. Using the LED signs to say 'game over', almost as a taunt, was a tick.

I think even the bugler - used like that, only when the result is beyond doubt - was a tick. Can't really believe I'm saying that.

Isn't the bugler just a bloke who plays the bugle (who was unfortunately used by the club for a while)? Can't imagine we hire him to play it if we are about to win?

Posted

I also liked pre match that they played songs chosen by the players and it said which player selected each song. Was a nice personal touch.

Also much better to have Robbo doing the on ground stuff. He's a natural.

I hope you're right. The trumpeter as a pre-game organised performance was absolute plonk, but I welcome anyone in red and blue to bring an instrument along, be it trumpet, bass drum or jazz flute if it's going to contribute to the atmosphere and crowd noise when it's advantageous for the team.

I loved the bells tolling and the ACDC song - my hairs were standing up on end. Every supporter around me was going crazy. I thought it was all great.

I really liked the players to watch on the big screen before the bounce. The crowd roar when Hogan's name was read out sent a shiver down my spine.

He did on Saturday (though it may not have been the same bloke).

Couldn't he have just done it because he wanted to?

Well that's true. It's also the club's prerogative to make sure he isn't on the oval at the start of the match. Regardless of that, whoever decided that he would play the trumpet at the end of the game rather than before the players ran onto the ground needs to be commended.

It is what "he" did originally - before the club plucked him out and gave him a terrible role.

Why do people on here want to pluck an argument out of nothing?

Yes, I am aware that is what happened prior to 2007 and I am glad that they have returned him to the cheersquad.

The entry with 'Hells Bells' was just AWESOME. I too thought it was similar to when 'The Undertaker' from WWE enters the arena. Great work MFC!

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
