Cripps is a first-rate midfielder, already in the top 50 of the game and deserves full credit for that in a rubbish group.

Hogan is already in the top 5 of the AFL's key forwards, delivering at least on a level with the likes of Hawkins, Walker, and J. Riewoldt.

It is an easy 'win' for Hogan but we'll just have to see which games the selectors have watched.

Either way, I don't think there's a lot at stake here!

Don't mean to tear Cripps down but he's a 1st rate clearance midfielder, not quite the same as a first rate overall mid IMO. Great around stoppages, but doesn't do a lot of damage in general play. Although, that's not a surprise in a bad team.

Il admit his clearance work is insane but watching him closely over the past 2 months his disposal needs a tidy up and he doesn't damage the opposition enough with them.. Paul Roos was right.. Why is their even a debate? The fact is the media have absolutely pumped up Cripps as a dime in a dozen once in a 10 year midfielder is absolutely laughable. Cripps will be a good midfielder like some of those names but the fact that's its a huge debate against Hogan??

Not saying he will be a dud or anything he will be a super player for Carlton but Hogan is by far the best young key forward I have ever seen that's close to the Great Wayne Carey.

I do think Hogan is more deserving but I suspect the voters will have banded together to orchestrate a tie if there is one. I wouldn't be disappointing. I can't imagine Cripps winning it over Hogan. That would be outrageous.

As much as the game has changed over the past 5, 10, 15, 20 years, going back to the Lockett, Dunstall, Ablett years, fans and pundits still respect a good, consistent key forward. I can't see how you could possibly give Cripps more votes ahead of Hogan if you have at the very least a novice understanding of the game.

i don't disagree with you dd, but someone like matt priddis is similar in being a clearance king but not too damaging in general play and he was good enough for a brownlow.

I hope that changes with Goldstein winning this year but it's unlikely.

Ha ha, if it comes out as a tie, the two will spend the next half a decade being compared, like Naitanui and Watts. And the comparison will be almost as one-sided.

Melbourne kickd 225 goals this season. Hogan kicked 44 of them and had 16 goal assists. That's more than a quarter of our scoring coming through him, and even so, he spent a lot of time well up the ground providing links.

Like the 'Us v St Kilda' thread, having to make this comparison of Hogan v Cripps is a real pleasure and gives me confidence for the future.

The judges had to vote 5,4,3,2,1 by yesterday and provide their votes in a sealed envelope to be opened at the ceremony today. Whether they meet prior to voting to discuss contenders or (heaven forbid) collude to get a "preferred" outcome, I have no idea.

Or the one at the end of the third quarter where I thought the interchange umpire wasn't doing his job as I believed there were 23 Giants players hanging off him as he took the mark?

The mark i really liked was the one he took on the city side wing from a kick from Dunn ( at 22 second mark of this video). I was sitting on that side and said to my mate before Dunn kicked it that Hogan would demand the ball and take the mark. Dunn was a little slow to get it to him but kicked it out in front and with no one in the hole Jesse was never not going to mark it. Great use of the body and super clean hands.

Been said before but he is just a natural footballer and the most talented player we've had at the club since Schwarz markI (ie prior to his first knee injury).

It pretty much can't be a tie when you think about it, because if every voter gives them the top 2 it will be player A (5x5+4x4) = 41 and player B (4x5+5x4) =40

The only way a tie could happen is if someone gives hogan or cripps a 3

It was a very good mark too. What a strange career.

Still remember what I think was his last game, at Etihad against the Roos. Kicked like 2.2 in the first quarter, with about 12 kicks and 6 marks. At quarter time I thought, 'he's finally clicked' and he proceeded to do nothing for the rest of the match and we lost after being in a very commanding position early on.
