Howe is just a cog...lets not get carried away in either direction.

...ok ...he's a 1-1/2 trick pony

Time for Roosy to draw a line in the sand. Sick to death of this club being held to ransom by one trick players getting ahead of themselves.

Take a leaf out of your captain's book.

Said like it is but supporters find it is hard to tolerate players that are put on high pedestals dragging their arses for a whole season or having excuses why they cannot even play to then confirm all the rumours at end of season. As far as I am concerned Gary Ablett has set the bench mark for acceptable departure. He played some of his best ever footy as a parting gift before he left the cats. Not surprising he received a standing ovation on his return back to Kardinia Park with the Suns.

Good point. His leadership qualities were also questioned. Not any more. Few players move club and have their reputation enhanced. He is one

Handy player and I hope he stays. Love his extraordinary high marking. Imagine we would do quite ok in a trade situation and of course he has to put it together on the field and not get seriously injured to secure a solid deal for himself. Frawley taught us all a good lesson last year and I'll be stuffed if I'm going to get my knickers in a tangle again this year. No one is really indispensable ( Refer Ablett/Franklin) and you can trade quite well around things in need.

well every year we have lost someone to free agency. I know he isnt one but still it will be a shame to lose him. I hope he doesnt request a trade. Im sick of players leaving.

The good ones, you mean? Because there's been no shortage of players leaving each year since Roos came in to clean the place up. :roos:

Almost every player that's left has been turned into a win. We got Vince for Sylvia, that's just hilarious.

Plus the eternally-disinterested Frawley has been replaced by the highly promising Frost, and we got Brayshaw from pick 3. All wins in my eyes. Howe leaving would mean getting a decent young midfielder via trade that achieves far more than just great speccies.

To be fair I think Howe has shown more than that. I thought he did a pretty good job down back, rarely beaten one on one, took some terrific intercept grabs and he is an above average field kick (although he is prone to the odd mistake.) I see what you're saying but I think he brings more to the club than just a good speccie these days.

Like the club wanting to get discussions underway early. Now allows for some healthy bidding from any suitors. Also allows a whole season for ongoing list analysis ( holes that will need to be filled) plus plenty of time for club to get a potential plan "b" co-ordinated in need. Jeremy calling the shots, but seems fair for everyone. Reckon our club thinking on trading and recruiting has come along way over the past few years. Flush things out nice and early and give yourself time to get in the drivers seat.

True I was being overly simplistic. He's proven to be a great defender, but there's been persistent rumours he doesn't like Roos' disciplined approach to his style, moving him to the backline and making him a stringent defender. His intercept marking has been sensational though so it's been a great move on Roosy's part.

It would be interesting to see the poll results of whether people would've jumped (sorry, bad pun) at pick 6 for Howe last year. It seemed to be on the table at the last minute from GWS. Would've meant nabbing Lever or Cockatoo in the draft, both equally promising in my eyes.

I rate Howe as a valuable asset both on and off-field. Anyone who still thinks he's just a speccy specialist must have been watching him recently with their eyes closed. His marking is a weapon no doubt but his skills overall are excellent, one of the better field kicks we have, and when he was beaten down back it was usually due to being outsmarted which was to be expected. He is a player on the up and whilst unfortunate that his pre-season has been interrupted, I expect his improvement to continue this season wherever Roos decides to play him.

He's also a ripping fella who is clearly a positive influence around the club. Supporters love him. Kids especially love him.

All that said, I think a vast majority would be taking Pick 6 for him, if it was actually on offer. Here's hoping his value continues to climb.

He's just put off contract negotiations, according to The Age.

http://www.theage.com.au/afl/demons-highflyer-jeremy-howe-puts-off-contract-negotiations-20150305-13wepe.html

For the many highlights he provides, he doesn't actually do much on the field besides that. If we were offered pick 6/7, i'd jump at it. Throw in Grimes and Bail whilst we're at it (though that may lower the pick we get back).

He's a great bargaining chip because I think other clubs rate him more highly than his output dictates.

He is basically a flanker who can't run through the middle so if we can get a mid back in a trade (particularly one of GWS out of contract mids) I would do it in a heartbeat.

Not that Howe is one of my more favorite players, but if we lose him, i think supporters could become a little disillusioned with the AFL. Especially if he ends up at the Hawks or the Cats, who lets face it, don't really need him to continue to make finals. I think that it is less to do with Howe and more to do with the principle of it.

Howe wouldn't get a run with the Hawks.

They can't have been too numerous - he finished 6th in the b&f

Matt Jones and Dean Terlich finished top 5 the year before. In case you hadn't realised we've been really [censored] for almost 10 years. B&F placings are hardly relevant in that context.

Must stay.

Potential to be the best HBF in the AFL.

Potential to be the best HFF in the AFL

Flankers who can't run through the middle are useless in today's game.

Don't underrate the marketing value of this guy. Howey sells tickets and memberships. Period.

He can also play a bit.

Sign him up.

You know what sells tickets and memberships? Winning games. What had a bigger effect Howe winning mark of the year a couple of years ago or losing by 100+ to Sydney in the same game?

Posted

Jeremy Howe does not sell tickets to games. Liam Jurrah did, Alan Jacovich did and to some limited extent, Mitch Clark did.

Had a reasonable year across the half backline last year, not great though. Certainly should try and keep him, but if we can work him into a trade for Sheil or Treloar, it's a no brainer really.

It seems you can't mention the marketability of a player without people leaping to point out that winning games is more important. Of course it's more important. One doesn't cancel out the other.

He does run through the middle.....he has great pace and ball carry.

Don't be literal...HBF is purely a position that exists on the whiteboard so that Fox Footy can present League Teams.

If he pissfarts around in the first six or so rounds with or without excuses and still fobs off re-signing then I am going to make up my mind pretty quickly of his likely intentions.

"Just want to see the direction the club is going "

I wouldn't say he's 100% gone, but when was a last time a player pushed talks off to the end of the year, then re-signed when the time came? I know Travis Cloke did it, but can't remember any other instances.

If he was hell-bent on staying, he would be open to negotiations during the season. This tells me an offer is already on the table, probably big $$$ from GWS.

It will be a shame to lose him, but he's expendable and we'll get something good in return.

Sylvia Saint your last sentence I confidently agree with. Roos, Taylor and Viney have the runs on the board that say they will get the best deal done for us should Howe not stay.

I just don't think a player who can take a speccy is really that marketable. Farmer & Robbo were because they could kick bags of goals as well but seeing a speccy a couple of times a game is great at the time but overall I don't think it has an effect on bums in seats.

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the sweltering heat to bring you their Preseason Training observations from Gosch's Paddock on Monday morning. SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to

BEST OF THE REST by Meggs

Meggs' Review of Melbourne's AFLW Season 9 ... Congratulations first off to the North Melbourne Kangaroos on winning the 2024 AFLW Premiership. Roos Coach Darren Crocker has assembled a team chock-full of competitive and highly skilful players who outclassed the Brisbane Lions in the Grand Final to remain undefeated throughout Season 9. A huge achievement in what was a dominant season by North. For Melbourne fans, the season was unfortunately one of frustration and disappointment
