2015 AFL National Draft prospects: The next batch

Featured Replies

GWS had a couple of picks 2 in Kelly and O Rourke

Neither were seen as aggressive kids, both talented but O'Rourke was always seen as an introvert and Kelly a skilled player.

I have doubts on O'Rourke but I think Kelly will be ok.

I think going a light frame with this draft is too risky. We don't need the nice icing players. We need ones who can get in and win bloody clearances against teams like St Kilda.

Just answered my own question with Google. Looks like he would need a bit of time to develop but could be a handy utility. Worth a look if he slips to 3rd round?

I wouldn't be so concerned with the light frame but would definitely want a competitive, aggressive player...

No invite for Jake Lovett to the combine?

Good. Although he doesn't sound as though he is the type that would dominate a combine.

I hope we are keeping Lovett on the down low, I'd rather take a punt on Lovett - than stick with M.Jones, Bail or McKenzie.

Agree. You know what you get with Jones, Bail and McKenzie and it is not very much. At Least with Lovett he is an unknown quantity.

How can you make that staggering comment if you haven't even watched him play. Doesn't even dominate TAC level.. i will be very surprised if we rookie him. Go for the best available talent.

No one with any idea described either of those 2 as aggressive.

Would love to see a quote too.

No reports had them as aggressive, you just made that up.

Yes they did. I looked it up again before u posted that and found several that did. Do your research before posting accusations mate

I'm actually struggling to find anything that describes Parish as aggressive. If he isn't aggresive then we may as well toss him in the same basket as Toumpas Watts and Cook

He doesn't look aggressive. He looks clean, not dissimilar to Toumpas, good on the outside.

Great skills. Well balanced kid. They mentioned in the nationals Parish was a contested player - but I haven't seen it.

I prefer Balic, but I might just be bias towards kids who play basketball.

hird he's useless KDA, out all night playin up, eating too much, & into a good time. ;)

not upto AFL footy with his attitude.

A skillful line breaker would be very handy

Harley Bennell can smash the lines.

I don't think being aggressive is a pre-requisite, but being competitive is.

Parish is a competitor...Jimmy and Jack are not.[/quote

They were all bloody competitive.

If they weren't competitive they wouldn't even be drafted

Stingrays are by far the best team this year and not surprising with 8 combine invites. I've been down to Dandy as much as I can this year and Lovett is showing a bit. Started well and got his vic country selection but injuries didn't help. He's been working his way back and trying hard to compete in a very tallented side. When the top end is out (like this weekend) he shone and got plenty of it (20+ I believe). Probably not a bad thing for us he's in such a good side - means we won't pay a top dollar. At the moment seems like an early third round in a weak draft, will fall because of lack of exposure, and probably cost us 4th+5th. Worth a look because he plays hard - doesn't mind the inside work, but is getting a lot of handball recieves link up work. I'd be penciling him in as a dee but don't expect at 2016 debut.

Parish is a competitor...Jimmy and Jack are not.

I think with this club, that its time we overreacted Re our soft club nature, & swung too far the other way for a while at least. recruiting more aggressive types than we ever have before.

lets get too many aggressive types; not just competitors, & try to shift the public perception of this club & of its support base..

Let us be the aggressors, the bullies, & let us be the ones dishing it out for a few years, at least.

I'd like us to totally shift the nice guys image, from this club, & let us get some more breadth in our support base demographic.

Balic. We need his skills.

ok but what does he offer differntly watts and toumpas?

ok but what does he offer differntly watts and toumpas?

Fair comment, cleaner inside of a contest than either.

That is a reasonable start. All 3 are elite users of the football.

Toumpas tends to panic a bit atm, I would argue that Balic has better composure.

In saying that, I'm not locked in on Balic, I just prefer him to Parish, I don't think it's a strong field of mids this year.

It would be ideal to take a tall first up, then draft a mid with our second pick - hopefully Gresham or Lovell.

  • REPORT: St. Kilda

Hands up if you thought, like me, at half-time in yesterday’s game at TIO Traeger Park, Alice Springs that Melbourne’s disposal around the ground and, in particular, its kicking inaccuracy in front of the goals couldn’t get any worse. Well, it did. And what’s even more damning for the Melbourne Football Club is that the game against St Kilda and its resurgence from the bottomless pit of its miserable start to the season wasn’t just lost through poor conversion for goal but rather in the 15 minutes when the entire team went into a slumber and was mugged by the out-of-form Saints. Their six goals two behinds (one goal less than the Demons managed for the whole game) weaved a path of destruction from which they were unable to recover. Ross Lyon’s astute use of pressure to contain the situation once they had asserted their grip on the game, and Melbourne’s self-destructive wastefulness, assured that outcome. The old adage about the insanity of repeatedly doing something and expecting a different result, was out there. Two years ago, the score line in Melbourne’s loss to the Giants at this same ground was 5 goals 15 behinds - a ratio of one goal per four scoring shots - was perfectly replicated with yesterday’s 7 goals 21 behinds.
This has been going on for a while and opens up a number of questions. I’ll put forward a few that come to mind from this performance. The obvious first question is whether the club can find a suitable coach to instruct players on proper kicking techniques or is this a skill that can no longer be developed at this stage of the development of our playing group? Another concern is the team's ability to counter an opponent's dominance during a run on as exemplified by the Saints in the first quarter. Did the Demons underestimate their opponents, considering St Kilda's goals during this period were scored by relatively unknown forwards? Furthermore, given the modest attendance of 6,721 at TIO Traeger Park and the team's poor past performances at this venue, is it prudent to prioritize financial gain over potentially sacrificing valuable premiership points by relinquishing home ground advantage, notwithstanding the cultural significance of the team's connection to the Red Centre?
