WELCOME TO THE MELBOURNE FOOTBALL CLUB - BEN NEWTON

Featured Replies

A couple of Draft profiles from Bigfooty at the time by Knightmare and Snoop Dog

#40 (Sydney) Ben Newton (WA)

Height: 184cm, Weight: 78kg, DOB: 08/08/1992

Recruited from: South Fremantle

Style: Luke Hodge

Range: 35-57

Why: Damaging player by hand and by foot. Strong mark. Pace is ok without being great. Seems to be able to play some inside and outside. Sometimes seems to lack some awareness and can get caught. Also has had some injury problems but the talent is there.

# 24 Geelong - Ben Newton (South Fremantle / 182cm / 78kg)

Ben is an AIS graduate, Colts team of year member in 09 and is a capt of his Colts side. Many wont have seen him because he played very little Champs football due to injury (appendicitis) earlier in the year. I think he will need a year or two to develop but there is certainly a lot of development left in him. Not afraid to run and carry and his left foot is a weapon. Gets great penetration with it so becomes one of those 70m players which are incredibly important in breaking down zones in the modern game. Also ticks a few other boxes insomuch as he can take a contested mark, will collect his own footy and can use it very well by hands in traffic. If I had one knock on the kid it would be that he can get caught. Am unsure whether he is just trying to get to his left side or whether he lacks awareness / vision. In some ways kind of reminds me of Nick Suban or Heath Black for those a bit older so certainly a very exciting prospect. From all reports a lovely kid and will present really well to clubs. I wouldnt be at all surprised if Ben goes a little higher come draft day and hence I would have a draft range from 17 - 35.

For some reason I have the "R-O-T-H Newton" jingle stuck in my head now.

Thanks for that.

I was having a brilliantly ear-worm free day...

The other Newton is Juice, how do we call the new variety?

Bert.

Let us all hope that this is another in a long strong of shrewd recruiting moves for Roos, in the vain of Kennedy, Richards, Mumford and McGlynn, et al.

Is the "2017 Norm Smith Medalist" pushing our luck?

Isaac?

yep...no probs!! She'll be apples !!! :)

He was offered a contract??

Of one year. Having played 4 games in 4 years due to injury and form.

The writing was on the wall for him that he was always going to be purely a depth player. That Port midfield is so hard to break into.

How about "Juicier"? - can't you just imagine Macavaney pronouncing "Juicier", like he does "Special"!

Yes but he wasn't "released". He was an uncontracted player that was offered a contract.

Great signing

...until he has a bad game and he becomes a total loser.

Mate.

He was out of contract. PA put a contract in front of him. He chose to chase opportunity elsewhere, was delisted and made his way to Melbourne as a free agent, years ago he would have gone to us in the PSD.

He was a required player by PA, but chose to leave.

I am making no judgements on this bloke's value as a player, only stating the facts according to PA and Newton's manager.

I don't disagree with any of what you've written above. Not really sure what we're arguing about?

If Port valued him enough to offer a contract, good enough for me.

The more grunt the better.

Another go at the team suggested by JW, bearing in mind our two draft picks may be ready to go.

Dunn Frost Jetta

Lumumba Mcdonald Garland

Vince Tyson Watts

McCartin Dawes Howe

Garlett Hogan Kent

Foll: Gawn, Jones, Viney

Interchange: Brayshaw, Newton, Salem, Toumpas

Emergencies: Cross, JKH, Stretch

The above assumes that both Salem and Toumpas have a strong pre-season, but it grieves me to think that Cross, JKH and Stretch may not be automatic selections, plus that Jamar, Pederson, Mitchie, Bail and co-captain Grimesmay also be squeezed out by some of the new blood.

I must say I would have Grimes before Kent, maybe swapping Dunn into the forward pocket and put grimes down back, otherwise, like this side particularly with Brayshaw and Mccartin in. Mccartin and hogan could be anything, and frees up Howe to be his destructive self. Exciting line up.

Edited by Dees2014

6 defenders - 2 talls, 2 mediums, 2 smalls

1 wing/half back - (Lumumba)

2 rucks (or 1 ruck/1fwd/ruck)

2 tall forwards

Maybe 4 other forwards - Howe, Garlett, Kent, JKH, Salem or Bail (the sub as well as some midfield rotations in this group)

Leaves room for 7 midfielders

3 centre square: Jones, Tyson, Vince

Bench - Viney

Tagger - Cross

2 more spots for Newton OR Brayshaw, Watts, Matt Jones, Michie, Toumpas, Riley, McKenzie, Barry, Evans, Stretch

Well there should at least be competition for spots and if we have a good run with injury then Casey wont be short on ball winning players. If Lumumba plays off one wing with some time at half back and we get some rotations from the forwards then there's 1 genuine wing spot that probably doesn't suit Newton. I think we will all be hoping for Watts to make it his own or Toumpas, with Matt Jones the fall back. The other spot will come down to a versatile mid who can play forward, wing, in the centre etc. Newton's in with a shot if he has a good preseason as he does seem reasonably versatile.

Grimes will get a game.

The co-captain will not play at Casey.

Fin.

Stop that!!

I like the deess

And there's at least as much chance of one of these becoming A-grade as there is of Lever or Laverde or Duggan etc.

Except that we'll find out 2-3 years earlier.

Newton is a very good clearance player, alot like Michie is well worth giving more opportunity at senior level to see how he goes

Sir Isaac?:blink: Or Bert? :):)

Sorry -- got to remember to read the entire thread before posting ...

MFC should offer the kid a 2 year contract. Bypass our pick 53, and select him in PSD # 2. Solid, left footer, 22yo, ready to go. He was very unlucky not to make Port's finals team. Emergency on 5-6 times in last half of 2014.

Bazinga !!!!!

Newton is a very good acquisition... ready to play.

  • AFLW REPORT: Richmond

A glorious sunny afternoon with a typically strong Casey Fields breeze favouring the city end greeted this round four clash of the undefeated Narrm against the winless Tigers. Pre-match, the teams entered the ground through the Deearmy’s inclusive banner—"Narrm Football Weaving Communities Together and then Warumungu/Yawuru woman and Fox Boundary Rider, Megan Waters, gave the official acknowledgement of country. Any concerns that Collingwood’s strategy of last week to discombobulate the Dees would be replicated by Ryan Ferguson and his Tigers evaporated in the second quarter when Richmond failed to use the wind advantage and Narrm scored three unanswered goals.

  • CASEY: Frankston

The late-season run of Casey wins was broken in their first semifinal against Frankston in a heartbreaking end at Kinetic Stadium on Saturday night that in many respects reflected their entire season. When they were bad, they committed all of the football transgressions, including poor disposal, indiscipline, an inability to exert pressure, and some terrible decision-making, as exemplified by the period in the game when they conceded nine unanswered goals from early in the second quarter until halfway through the third term. You rarely win when you do this.

  • AFLW PREVIEW: Richmond

Round four kicks off early Saturday afternoon at Casey Fields, as the mighty Narrm host the winless Richmond Tigers in the second week of Indigenous Round celebrations. With ideal footy conditions forecast—20 degrees, overcast skies, and a gentle breeze — expect a fast-paced contest. Narrm enters with momentum and a dangerous forward line, while Richmond is still searching for its first win. With key injuries on both sides and pride on the line, this clash promises plenty.

  • AFLW REPORT: Collingwood

Expectations of a comfortable win for Narrm at Victoria Park quickly evaporated as the match turned into a tense nail-biter. After a confident start by the Demons, the Pies piled on pressure and forced red and blue supporters to hold their collective breath until after the final siren. In a frenetic, physical contest, it was Captain Kate’s clutch last quarter goal and a missed shot from Collingwood’s Grace Campbell after the siren which sealed a thrilling 4-point win. Finally, Narrm supporters could breathe easy.

  • CASEY: Williamstown

The Casey Demons issued a strong statement to the remaining teams in the VFL race with a thumping 76-point victory in their Elimination Final against Williamstown. This was the sixth consecutive win for the Demons, who stormed into the finals from a long way back with scalps including two of the teams still in flag contention. Senior Coach Taylor Whitford would have been delighted with the manner in which his team opened its finals campaign with high impact after securing the lead early in the game when Jai Culley delivered a precise pass to a lead from Noah Yze, who scored his first of seven straight goals for the day. Yze kicked his second on the quarter time siren, by which time the Demons were already in control. The youngster repeated the dose in the second term as the Seagulls were reduced to mere

Narrm time isn’t a standard concept—it’s the time within the traditional lands of Narrm, the Woiwurrung name for Melbourne. Indigenous Round runs for rounds 3 and 4 and is a powerful platform to recognise the contributions of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in sport, community, and Australian culture. This week, suburban footy returns to the infamous Victoria Park as the mighty Narrm take on the Collingwood Magpies at 1:05pm Narrm time, Sunday 31 August. Come along if you can.
