It doesn't matter who we play, or where we play in round 1 (except for maybe the Saints at the G). Given we finished 2nd last this year, we'd be odds on to lose to our round 1 match anyway.

At least we get a home game.

Stop your whinging!

Hey come on, it's that magical time of the year between the trade and draft periods where there is nothing worth talking about.

Got to complain about something!

There was a time when the Suns at the G was a given, no so now although whilst we'll have our work cut out, we are a chance.

We played the Suns once this year and went down by only 8 points.

To think that we're going to be no chance against them next year is rubbish.

Agree - we were finishing well until that terrible free kick was paid to Ablett....worst decision ever.

The suns don't even have a coach!!!

Often it takes time for a team to implement a new coach's game plan.

We are playing a home game on a Saturday Afternoon against a fellow bottom 8 side from last year who have to travel interstate.

Ablett is a year older, and therefore more susceptible to arthritis.

Unless we want to individually pick who we play against (patients of the the blind pygmy retirement village, or a St Kilda side who can only play rookies, supplemented by players carrying a injury); what's not to like about this.

It also gives us a good measure of where we are at after a pre-season of "training the house down"

Suns at the G in round 1

I like it

Great test for our midfield to see if they've made strides

Brayshaw vs O'Meara will be a great matchup :)

Round 1 V's Gold Coast. Saturday afternoon at the G. Traditional time. Warm autumn day.

What's not to like?

And unlike 2012, 2013 and 2014 when we went into round 1 as favourites, we'll actually go in underdogs and with no expectation.

The result is not so important as the performance. I can handle a loss against a side that will play finals next year, but if we put in repeat of the 2012 round 1 schemozzle, it will be a long, long year.

We're at home what a great result.

Totally agree, it will be endeavour that counts. A real test for us as we will have an almost new forward line for game 1. Dawes out, Frawley gone, Hogan (I hope) first game, Garlett new. Others who played forward weren't permanently there.

Will be interested to hear Saty and others training reports to know how our forward line is shaping up.

Given the new forward line, if we win round 1 it will be a fab result for us.

Being a game on a Sat afternoon @ the G will hopefully bring all the Dee's supporters out in force, especially if Hogan lines up. A game really worth going to

Jesus.....We havn't even drafted Brayshaw and you have him playing in the midfield in his first game?....Talk about pressure on a young kid.....

If they play their full phalanx of talls we are going to be stretched.

Their midfield is superb.

Be interesting to see how the new coach deploys baby judas coming off that shoulder knack. Rumours abound that the injury was severe?

Angus Brayshaw eats pressure for breakfast

Disagree, this attitude has been ok for the last few years, but we need to win and we need to win R1. Its vital.

GREAT NEWS! Looks like we will get the ANZAC Eve game vs Richmond:

"Richmond and Melbourne also appear to have been successful in their joint push to play each other on the eve of Anzac Day, with the Tigers hosting what both clubs hope will become a regular fixture on the night of April 24. Next year that game falls on a Friday night". http://www.theage.com.au/afl/afl-news/tigers-to-play-14-home-and-away-games-at-mcg-in-2015-20141023-11at1h.html

Would love to see Eddie's face as he vigourously fought this suggestion!!

Would expect us to host in alternate years. Really excited for our club on getting this fixture going!

Yes that's great news about Anzac day eve but would be nice if we were to host it.

That's 50,000 of gate proceeds going all to Richmond.

Beggers can't be choosers...

We will be training the house down as usual, exhibiting wonderful ball skills, structure, effort and endurance

And thennnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn we actually have to play and compete Training well is nothing if you cannot transfer it to game day

Being a joint push you'd expect that either proceeds would split a la ess coll on Anzac day or looking at a long term set up of reverse the home team each year. Either way all good. I'm actually quite stunned that Collingwood "allow" us to host QB every year with them as the away team - you would think that being a long term relationship that some sort of joint marketing and dispersion of proceeds would be the norm.

So after a few years in the Friday Night wilderness we will be getting a Friday Night fixture again, lets make this count and try and lock it in as an annual event, would be nice to have two big days a year. Small steps

Anzac Eve

QB

and at least 3 Home games at the G against any of Essendon, Richmond, Carlton and Hawks wouldn't hurt

  • PREVIEW: West Coast

Saturday’s election night game in Perth between the West Coast Eagles and Melbourne represents 18th vs 15th which makes it a tough decision as to which party to favour. The Eagles have yet to break the ice under their new coach in Andrew McQualter who is the second understudy in a row to confront Demon Coach Simon Goodwin who was also winless until a fortnight ago. On that basis, many punters might be considering to go with the donkey vote but I’ve been assigned with the task of helping readers to come to a considered opinion on this matter of vital importance across the nation. It was almost a year ago that I wrote a preview here of the Demons’ away game against the Eagles (under the name William from Waalitj because it was Indigenous Round).  I issued a warning that it was a danger game, based on my local knowledge that the home team were no longer easybeats and that they possessed a wunderkind generational player in Harley Reid who was capable of producing stellar performances playing among men a decade and more older than he.  At the time, the Eagles already had two wins off the back of a couple of the young man’s masterclasses and they had recently given the Bombers a scare straight after their Anzac Day blockbuster draw against the then reigning premiers.

  • NON-MFC: Round 08

Round 08 of the 2025 AFL Season kicks off on Thursday with a must-win game for the Bombers to stay in touch with the top eight, while the struggling Roos seek a morale-boosting upset. Friday sees the Saints desperate for a win as well if they are to stay in finals contention and their opponents the Dockers will be eager to crack in to the Top 8 with a win on the road. Saturday kicks off with a pivotal clash for both sides asthe Bulldogs look to solidify their top-eight spot, while Port seeks to shake their pretender tag. Then the Crows will be looking to steady their topsy turvy season against a resurgent Blues looking to make it 4 wins on the trot. On Election Night a Blockbuster will see the ladder-leading Pies take on the Cats, who are keen to bounce back after a narrow loss. On Sunday the Sydney Derby promises fireworks as the Giants aim to cement their top-eight status, while the Swans fight to keep their season alive. The Hawks, celebrating their centenary, will be looking to easily account for the Tigers who are desperate to halt their slide. The Round concludes on Sunday Night with a top end of the table QClash with significant ladder implications; both Queensland teams are in scintillating form. Who are you tipping this week and what are the best results for the Demons?

The Demons hit the road in Round 8, heading to Perth to face the West Coast Eagles at Optus Stadium. With momentum building, the Dees will be aiming for a third straight victory to keep their season revival on course. Who comes in and who goes out?

  • REPORT: Richmond

The fans who turned up to the MCG for Melbourne’s Anzac Day Eve clash against Richmond would have been disappointed if they turned up to see a great spectacle. As much as this was a night for the 71,635 in attendance to commemorate heroes of the nation’s past wars, it was also a time for the Melbourne Football Club to consolidate upon its first win after a horrific start to the 2025 season. On this basis, despite the fact that it was an uninspiring and dour struggle for most of its 100 minutes, the night will be one for the fans to remember. They certainly got value out of the pre match activity honouring those who fought for their country. The MCG and the lights of the city as backdrop was made for nights such as these and, in my view, we received a more inspirational ceremony of Anzac culture than others both here and elsewhere around the country.

  • CASEY: Richmond

The match up of teams competing in our great Aussie game at its second highest level is a rarity for a work day Thursday morning but the blustery conditions that met the players at a windswept Casey Fields was something far more commonplace. They turned the opening stanza between the Casey Demons and a somewhat depleted Richmond VFL into a mess of fumbling unforced errors, spilt marks and wasted opportunities for both sides but they did set up a significant win for the home team which is exactly what transpired on this Anzac Day round opener. Casey opened up strong against the breeze with the first goal to Aidan Johnson, the Tigers quickly responded and the game degenerated into a defensive slog and the teams were level when the first siren sounded.
