Just heard the news this bloke just got delisted by the crows. Crow fans are seriously not happy this kid has been cut.

A lot of people were very surprised that he got overlooked in the draft as he had a very good under 18s for SA last year and was playing senior footy aswell.

For people that don't know him he is 178cm tall and weighs 78kg. He was rated last year as having the best kick as noted by his 86% disposal effiancy which shows his cleanness and poise with the ball. And inside ball winner who loves the hard stuff. Not only is he a big time inside midfielder but he can also play out side or even on a half back flank as is his ability to hit targets by foot.

The way he plays just screams Sam Mitchell and I would love for the Dees to atleast consider him a rookie or worse DFA. Had a pretty good year this year in the SANFL hence to the dismay of a lot of crow supporters.

At one stage rated as a serious top 15 player of the draft. Would add some inside and outside grunt for us.

A good write up on him pre draft last year http://www.scpaige.com.au/draftess-in-focus-james-battersby/

32 Sydney (via Carlton and Richmond) - James Battersby (SA – Mid/Def)
Height: 177cm, Weight: 78kg, DOB: 7/11/1995
Recruited from: Sturt
Style:
Player comparison:
Range: 20-rookie
Profile: He is a real link up and run and carry type off a midfielder or back flank but a high production guy who finds plenty of it and uses it well. Battersby is one of the elite users of the footy in this draft class by hand and foot and he’s someone you want the ball in the hands of as that real precision kick. He has real composure to him just making the right decision every time even when under pressure and has excellent vision allowing him to see targets other may not and hitting his target up seamlessly. Battersby is one of the few players in this draft who can really use the footy on either side by hand and foot. Battersby through the midfield has shown that he can win the footy both inside the contest as well as prove an effective outside accumulator. He’s also shown off a back flank that he reads the ball exceptionally well and can be an both an effective 1v1 and intercept mark. Battersby has played strong footy through the u18 champs but he has also played some strong senior footy back in SA which will please the recruiters showing that he perform against the best young players in the country and against stronger more mature bodies.

dd is he Magner good in that he's good in the seconds but can't step up consistently in the seniors? Edited by DemonOX

Was a big fan in his draft year, definitely worth a look. Surprised he didn't get a look in at the Crows.

Lovely foot skills and makes good decisions. Reminded me of Sam Colquhuon, except he could win his own ball.

Kicks low & hard & accurately over distances like Strauss, but wins his own ball and is much better under pressure and one-on-one.

So what's the problem with him? Why does he seem so good yet hasn't gone on with it so far?

He wasn't on their rookie list for long. Something is definitely up here. He either isn't an AFL quality prospect, or the crows have hit the panic button and broomed out one too many.

It all depends on how our cards fall on draft day. 2&3 will be used for best available, 40 on a need, 42 on Stretch and 53 on Jetta. If 2 of those 3 live picks are not mids, Roos and co will go bargain basement shopping for a mid for the rookie list. Batters might be an option.

I suspect it is a byproduct of the Crows having a crack inside the first two rounds of the draft for the first time after their breach of salary cap penalties.

I presume that the rules for the Crows are the same as ours and that they could have carried him on the Rookie list for another year. This would not impact their draft or primary list. The first thing I would be doing would be to find out why they didn't.

Overlooked in the draft.

Chopped from the rookie list when it seems he played some seriously good games of footy for a rookie in his first year.

Has to be:
1. He doesn't want to be a rookie and wants a main list spot with another club or to get paid more to play state league footy

OR

2. He has some attribute that will stop him ever playing AFL footy

- Size - doubt it, 178cm isn't that short

- Speed - again, doesn't seem too slow

- Kicking - no way

- Physicality - doubt it

- Attitude/Work ethic - this could be the one

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the sweltering heat to bring you their Preseason Training observations from Gosch's Paddock on Monday morning. SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to

Lever was also on restricted duties and appeared to be in runners.  The main group was doing end-to-end transition work in a simulated match situation. Ball mov

WAYNE WUSSELL'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS Rehab: Lever, Spargo, McAdam, Lindsay, Brown Sinnema is excellent by foot and has a decent vertical leap. Windsor is training with the Defenders. Windsor's run won't be lost playing off half back. In 19 games in 2024 he kicked 8 goals as a winger. I see him getting shots at g

BEST OF THE REST by Meggs

Meggs' Review of Melbourne's AFLW Season 9 ... Congratulations first off to the North Melbourne Kangaroos on winning the 2024 AFLW Premiership. Roos Coach Darren Crocker has assembled a team chock-full of competitive and highly skilful players who outclassed the Brisbane Lions in the Grand Final to remain undefeated throughout Season 9. A huge achievement in what was a dominant season by North. For Melbourne fans, the season was unfortunately one of frustration and disappointment
