Nobody is talking about pick 53 that we also received in the trade for Frost. I know that we can use it to upgrade Jetta however surely we can use later picks for that rather than waste it. There is no reason that there may not be good players left at 53 and/or are we planning to use pick 2 in the pre-season draft [i.e. by grabbing Tutt ahead of Carlton]?

Grabbing him for Casey?

It would be nice to see Casey win a premiership this year! There are four Casey players already training with Melbourne, they have secured a fulltime coach tfor next year and hopefully we will have a better run of injuries, giving them access to more players!

He was being flippant, CBD...

Using ND53 will mean delisting TWO contracted players and rookie-ing them.

I think the club will summon the gumption to do this to one player but the issue with using ND53 as opposed to Rookie Draft 2 is about 15 live picks.

The club only has to give a 1 year contract for the kid at RD2 as opposed to ND53 and that might be incentive enough (with the contracts issue) to take one of those in the mix at ND53 at RD2.

Correct me if I am wrong. Don't we still have to delist someone to use Pick 40?

In Jetta, Lamumba, Garlett, Newton, Frost, Stretch, Pick 2, Pick 3

Out Nicho, Clark, Byrnes, Blease, Strauss, Clisby, Frawley, Tapscott

Thats 8 in and 8 out.

I'd be all for putting Trenners onto the rookie list for a year or one of McKenzie or Evans to use Pick 40. Remembering that we have recommitted to Harmes and King and likely Tapscott which means we only have one live rookie spot let.

No you're not missing anything, right on the dot, I reckon delist Evans or Trengove and re-draft them as rookies.

I don't think Tapscott will be on any list for the MFC for 2015.

I think they will want to have at least one RD selection.

Perhaps they feel Harmes and King are the kids to keep developing and Tapscott and Evans are ones to do a 'Jetta' but I think they would want to target someone with RD2.

I don't see why Neville Jetta, who is clearly a best 22 player and has busted a nut to get there, should be the one to pay for the club's seemingly sloppy list management.

I hate getting busted

I reckon that Roos in a nutshell (sorry Nut) was exceptional at recruiting mature players, exceptional at getting the best out of them but unsuccessful developing youth.

apology accepted,,,,

2003 is a bust but it was for most clubs - terrible draft year.

2004 Grundy - good get.

2005 bust but for Jack

2006 but but for Nick Smith.

2002 McVeigh at 5 was a good pick and Malcheski very good obviously

With picks after 30 BP got us Jetta (our NS?), McDonald (our Grundy), Bail, Gawn, Fitzpatrick, Howe.

Barry only had 4 years and the period above is 5. It all depends on how our later picks turn out but on face value it would appear Jetta, McDonald and Howe will have long careers and Bail, Gawn and Fitzpatrick (not as likely) have a good chance with Gawn being the best of the rest.

It's not so different IMO. Sydney's picks to about 30, other than McVeigh were all busts really although it is a small sample and shows how far ahead of the time Roos was with his trading over that period.

Looking at that you'd have to say Roos should leave the drafting to Taylor and Viney. His input should be limited to - we need mids of x type, followed by....etc'

By all means let him work his magic with the trading but stay the hell away from the draft (in the nicest possible way).

Incidentally, Richmond has delisted contracted player Matt Arnot but intends to re-list him as a rookie - Tiger midfielder cut but may receive second chance. I await evidence of Tiger supporters agonising over this development. Nor do I hear any complaining from Hawks supporters over reports that contracted player Sam Grimley might go the same way.

Add the saints with Schneider and the dons with Aylett.

My mail all along is that we want to do the same with a player on our list it's just getting the player to agree. The player is within their rights to ask for the cash and to be delisted outright instead of re rookied.

If that is the case then it's likely the player will be delisted and paid out.

Back on pick 40, one of the players who might be in contention is over ager Nathan Drummond who has an interesting background and heritage ~ AFL hopeful has more than football heritage

His draft combine results are superb. 5th in the 3km time trial, 3rd in the beep test, equal 4th in the kicking test, equal 1st in the clean hands test, equal 3rd in the goalkicking test, equal 8th in the 20m sprints, 2nd in the repeat sprints, equal 2nd in the standing vertical jump and 5th in the running vertical jump.

Whether that equates to him being a successful player at the highest level is another thing but my goodness those results are impressive.

Roos stated that he is merely a consultant and leaves the final decisions to the recruiting team. Whilst I am not entirely sure I believe that, taking Roos at face value maybe this exactly the same stance he took at the Swans as well.

Probably better that he does. I doubt he'll make it back from the rookie list, and he could probably make better coin as a lower grade foootballer in some of the country leagues.

And he could have been drafted with the very last pick in the Rookie draft last year.

Blind Freddie could see he was a talent last year - God knows what these recruiters do with their time. Trying to figure out what is wrong about players rather than trusting their instincts. It seems like recruiting has become too business like and systemized and they are constantly trying cover themselves against risk. If other clubs don't like a player then it's like an infection that spreads through the entire recruiting fraternity. You'd think they could pay someone to tell them that. If Peter Wright slips out of the the top 10 that will be another example of it - What a joke.

Firstly, if he was downgraded to a rookie i presume it would be at his contracted $ amount

I dont know what the rookie earns next year but it is going up to $57K in 2016. I would presume Evans would be on $100K. (I would assume all players on the senior list and are not 1st or 2nd year draftees are on $100K plus).

Do country leagues pay $100K a year to play footy ?

No but if he was delisted he would receive next years money regardless of whether he is on the rookie list or not. This means he would be able to be paid to play elsewhere, and still receive payments from MFC.

So say we delist Evans, Mckenzie or Trengove, then who can we pick up at 40? I really like the look of Ed Langdon and Oscar McDonald down back.

THAT WAS THE YEAR THAT WAS: 2024

Whichever way you look at it, the Melbourne Football Club’s 2024 season can only be characterized as the year of its fall from grace. Whispering Jack looks back at the season from hell that was. After its 2021 benchmark premiership triumph, the men’s team still managed top four finishes in the next two seasons but straight sets finals losses consigned them to sixth place in both years. The big fall came in 2024 with a collapse into the bottom six and a 14th placing. At Casey, the 2022 VFL p
