I just feel that the timing of Chips departure and where we're positioned as a club, including the playing list, is perfectly timed.

Go on, M...? How so?

Not having a go, just interested in your line of thinking here.

I flicked over to watch the last 5min of the cross win and I gave a cheeky chuckle when he kicked that ball out on the full that gave them a chance of snatching it. Thanks for the memories and thanks for pick 3!

Don't worry, he made amends by letting Bont win the Bulldogs game with his pathetic "spoiling" attempts.

It's about the management and leadership we now have in place. I can't help but feel that given the reshaping of the list by Roos and the rest of the FD team, the departure of Chip for me is timely and signals the end of the previous mindset of players not prepared to mentally effect the culture change required to transform the club. I still have doubts over Watts and a few others which will probably be delisted but Chip just seemed to be coasting when he should've been driving the change under arguably one of the best coaches in the league.

The fact that we've scored pick 3 as compensation just compounds the strength of this current position as I believe we will really capitalise on it during this off-season.

Im looking forward to our players waving to Chip on their way past as the Hawks slide down ladder.

Hope you're right, mate. I think there'll always be those blokes who are followers rather than leaders. They key, I guess, is having more of the latter types. I agree with you RE: Watts. But if it clicks for him, I think he's a confident enough kid that that'll enable him to take on some leadership responsibility.

I think that's a great example of mindset, if he had already decided that he was on board with the Roos train then he would/should have been one of the guys pushing the improvement and driving the list to achieve more. But instead you could see in his body language throughout the year that he was either already gone or he was waiting for something to change his mind. At no stage during the year did I think (seeing him out on the field) that he was going to be at Melbourne next year. There wasn't the intensity, urgency, or desire you would look for in someone who had bought in.

I also agree that the timing of this is pretty good. We have Tmac coming through as a promising FB, Dunn playing his best year of footy primarily as a defender, Garland playing less than his ability this year so hopefully he can regain some his form, and Pederson becoming a capable swing man. There are also a number of potential stopgap replacements for him on offer this year at the trade table. Roos is no fool, he knew what was going on and structured the team around the likelihood that Chip was gone.

For fear of this turning into another Watts bashing thread, I will only say this:

Watts has all the skills required to be an excellent AFL player but does not have any presence on the field. Feed him a heavily loaded protein diet and throw him in the gym for the next 4 months and leave him forward with Hogan next year.

We probably will play him forward if we secure two mids with 2 and 3.

Interesting listening to Ando on 693 this morning. He is convinced that Pick 3 for Chip is a rort. In effect, a quasi priority pick. Used the old "Buddy only got pick 19" line and the fact that Chip has been outside the top 6 in the B&F for the last 3 years.

I wonder if these sports journos actually watch the footy? He would have seen some of the worst body language from a league footballer in recent memory. Hands on hips staring sideways at the ground tells me Chip didn't want to be at MFC. Next year will be a different story.

A bloke at work was rambling on about how Melbourne should not have received pick 3 for Frawley, I kept saying it wasn't pick 3 it was a "BAND 1" compensation pick... He then proceeds to say how Hawthorn only received pick 19 for buddy. I said they also received a "Band 1" compensation pick.

I also said to him I would be happy to trade places with the Hawks and receive pick 19 for Frawley and also have back to back flags, but alas we finished second last and have nothing... He went quiet.

That's EXACTLY what transpired with me just then with a co-worker.

That's because people don't think. They just let their emotions lead their decision making. If you do that in business, you're [censored].

This is both our Frawley compo and priority pick that we were denied rolled into one.

It is the minimum we deserve in a competition that allows a million dollar player use his "depression" to retire then leave to another club.

I heard Smith and Bartlett on SEN talking about fairness and how Melbourne receiving pick 3 is not fair for other clubs not involved in the Frawley move (for example, the Lions now have pick 5 instead of pick 4).

I couldn't help but chuckle to myself. "Fairness?" They couldn't be serious could they?

Is it fair that the big clubs get the blockbuster matches and the best time slots to increase crowds, membership, sponsorship and ultimately profit for their clubs?

Is it fair that Melbourne play Geelong at Kardinia Park while big clubs play them "away" in Melbourne?

Is it fair that Hawthorn doesn't have to give up anything to poach a key defender in the prime of his career from a bottom club?

Is it fair that Sydney have a COLA?

Was it fair that Melbourne get investigated for tanking and that no other club faces the same investigation despite engaging in the same or similar practices?

Was it fair that GWS and Gold Coast get loaded up with first round picks thereby making it harded for bottom clubs to secure the best young talent?

The list goes on and on. I wish the competition was fair because it would be much better for the MFC. Unfortunately, it's not, and we have to live with that.

For once Melbourne comes out better off as a result of the unfair competition yet we have to hear people whinging and complaining about it without mentioning all the other ways in which we have been dudded under the system.

On SEN this morning Harford was trying to explain to Johnno, former Doggie, how system worked, as he clearly didn't get it. If people are dumb or don't listen, there is not much more you can do.

Probably proof that he signed up with Hawthorn last year. His form this year didn't warrant a Band 1 worthy contract.

Regardless, I'm very happy.

Form is irrelevant.

We should get Brayshaw with 2

If St. Kildare use pick 1 on McCartin, then we keep pick 3 to use on Petracca. Nothing wrong in not trading our high picks and securing the top two kids in this year's draft! Don't forget, whilst they are developing, we still have Vince, Tyson and Jones plus Viney, Salem and Trengove, each with another full pre-season under their belts. Of course, all this is contingent on knowing St Kildar's plans before we do anything.

THAT WAS THE YEAR THAT WAS: 2024

Whichever way you look at it, the Melbourne Football Club’s 2024 season can only be characterized as the year of its fall from grace. Whispering Jack looks back at the season from hell that was. After its 2021 benchmark premiership triumph, the men’s team still managed top four finishes in the next two seasons but straight sets finals losses consigned them to sixth place in both years. The big fall came in 2024 with a collapse into the bottom six and a 14th placing. At Casey, the 2022 VFL p
