Digging for gold - Targetting Under-achievers

Roos at Sydney showed that there are plenty of players looking ordinary that can be helped to thrive in the right environment. Ted Richards and Josh Kennedy are the two that stick out in my mind.

Doesn't mean we need to look at every struggler in the game, but we should at least be on the lookout. You're right in that there's always a risk that they'll be rubbish here if they're rubbish there, doesn't mean we shouldn't look though.

And developing underachievers from outside doesn't mean we can't develop our own at the same time as we have with Neville Jetta. I reckon most of ours are lost causes though.

I think it's a case of targeting players who have talent but for whatever reason can't get a game which is what Sydney have done well.

Not particularly smart bloke, makes dumb decisions, in & outside of footy.

I think meatheads like him don't normally do great things in football.

Like Sylvia, will always have great attributes to play the game, but probably won't put it together mentally.

As for Schroder, he won the cats vfl b&f, but will likely get delisted or traded.

Without name dropping, word from those at the club who should know are that he's a poor handballer and he has a nice kick but it rarely hits a target. Also, winning the b&f is actually seen as negative rather than a positive thing by those blokes, because it means you've simply been playing far too much footy in the 2s, and even consistent form in the 2s hasn't got you elevated because there are serious flaws in your game.

Gawn won the Casey B&F didn't he?

Who are the highly rated juniors that haven't lived up to their promise for whatever reason (not on the MFC list) that can be targetted.

A couple of recent examples would be Dom Tyson and Jared Polec.

Gary Rohan would have been another, his stocks will have risen significantly tonight.

Reading the heading re taegetting under achievers begs the question - hasn't this been our strategy all along?

Billie Smedts would fall into that category I reckon. As would the obvious O'Rourke

NO. my hugely devoted Cat supporting friends think this guy is an absolute stinker. They would love us to take him off their hands. They even call something or someone a "smedt" if they/it are a bit "crrrrrraaaappp"

I reckon Josh Walker could be handy.

Great hands. He is Geelong through and through though.

Watched him in the tac cup years ago. Could not believe he slipped through the ND. I even started a thread here on him.

Shaun McKernan?

I mentioned McKernan in another thread after he was delisted.

Before looking at his statistics, I thought I could remember a season where he kicked a few bags. Clearly I was thinking of somebody else - McKernan would be a no for me.

    TROUBLE by The Oracle

Situated roughly in Australia's geographic centre, Alice Springs has for many years been a troubled town suffering from intermittent crime waves, particularly among its younger residents. There was a time a little while ago when things were so bad that some even doubted the annual AFL game in the town would proceed.  Now, the hope is that this Sunday’s Melbourne vs Fremantle encounter will bring joy to the residents of the town and that through the sport and the example of the participants,

    GALLANT by KC from Casey

The world “gallant” is not one that is readily acceptable to losing teams in our game of football so when it was used in the context of the Casey Demons’ loss to Sandringham in yesterday’s match at Casey Fields, it left a bitter taste in the mouth.  The Demons went into the game against the St Kilda affiliated Zebras with the advantage of playing on their home turf (not that this has been a major asset in 2024) and with very little else going in their favour. The Saints have close to a full
