Goodwin's Law?

Cant say im overly excited by this.

In Roos I trust

2 premierships, 5 times all australian, club captain as player, then 4 years at Essendon with the last under the close mentoring of Thompson. Pretty good CV for me.

I don't understand why people would have issue.

I know mad essendon supporters who claim to have inside info that Simon told the club his intentions to move on today, apparently impressed at his final interview and has entered negotiations

Please no more apprentices

All the best coaches were new coaches once. I'd rather take a shot at the next great coach - with all the risks that includes - than take on proven middle of the road coaches like Voss or Ratten. These names are the only really viable alternative to the new coaches; the best in the business don't tend to move around a lot.

I know you're afraid of getting another Neeld. We all are. We could get another Neeld, but we could also get another Ken Hinkley, or another Neale Daniher. I'm pretty comfortable with that. Unless we get really lucky and Alastair Clarkson feels like a change of scenery, it's a new coach for me.

I think it's just the unknown factor and that he's not one of the candidates we had earmarked.

I'm happy with his credentials. He just needs to make a name for himself. Very happy with the coaches he's played under, worked under and will work under.

As long as Roos stays on in some overseeing capacity after his coaching contract is up, they can hire Elmo for all I care.

I agree, and I expect that's the plan. The new coach - be it Goodwin or someone else - will also have two years having been involved heavily in the decision making and learning about the players, he won't be coming in cold like a coach from the outside. That pre-existing relationship has to be of massive benefit. This was how Roos became coach of Sydney in the first place, and Longmire seems to be going okay as third generation in-house coach. Sydney haven't hired their senior coach from outside their own system since Eade in 1995.

I'd been really uncomfortable with this successor idea mostly out of fear of losing Roos, but as things start to take shape I can really see the merit in it and find myself at ease with the idea.

If Roosy has another 4 win season we'll start calling for his head anyway.

Goodwin might get the full time gig earlier than he thinks.

confirmed goodwin is our next coach.

Essendon are bleeding. Thompson says his up there with Hinkley as far as new coaches go.

Roosy could win zero games next year and one would call for sacking.

Every single person employed or volunteering for the club would be blamed before anyone points at Roos

I'm just not doing humour very well at the moment.

Sorry.

Confirmed by whom?

'Bring the good gear'...

Honestly, I don't care if he wins but if he can't get us going after Roos leaves he will have a torrid time as we will turn on him quicker than the laxative effect of the 'good gear' he was on...

That's the problem/risk/issue with the next coach - he needs to be able to withstand some pressure. Roos being around the club in an advisory capacity will help but won't shield that person entirely.

Goodwin would be on the back foot immediately.

People like Wilson and Barrett will now ask some tough questions to him, and about him, surrounding his involvement in the doping.

Usually, the MFC baulk at the hard choice from a PR point of view so this is unusual.

Again, it's welcome if he wins in 2017 and beyond, but the leash won't be long.

Not sure if the players would take a 3/4 time spray seriously from Elmo....... :)

Haha, nah they'd bring in snuffalufacus for that

Confirmed, Snuffleupagus is considering his contract status but is extremely disappointed his name was incorrectly spelt on DL.

Heard we've made a big play for Bert. Exquisite left footer with burst speed and a hard edge. Ernie is beside himself

Who the [censored] is Goodwin?

Someone Malcontent Turnbull tried to set up when he was, briefly, opposition leader??

Can't be worse than Neeld can it?

Too soon?

probably was never "too soon "

Apart from being around the whole Essendon saga his pedigree is perfect.

How bout Michael Voss though?

  • PREVIEW: Essendon

Not long ago, the narrative surrounding Melbourne was steeped in pessimism. There was some concern among the pundits (and even some fans) that the club would arrive at the AFL’s Gather Round still winless, vulnerable to a familiar adversary in the Essendon Football Club, and facing significant scrutiny from an ever-critical media on a national stage. Things have changed.

  • REPORT: Gold Coast

Steven King astutely identified the issues that had plagued the Melbourne Football Club over the past two and a half seasons when he auditioned for the newly created coaching role. The side that had claimed the 2021 premiership had become stodgy, slow-paced, and hesitant to take the initiative.
