People with Depression are Not Just “Sad”

Just as cell growth is normal in a person, we call out of control cell growth an illness—we call it cancer. Depression is exactly the same. Depression is when a normal, human emotion gets out of control to the point where it is no longer normal. Considering someone with an illness merely to be “sad” is an insult to that person and minimizes an illness that takes thousands of lives every year.

That is both a poor analogy and a simplistic view of depression. Yet a "moderator" gives it a like. As I inferred above, the stupidity I post is one thing but the ignorance that is posted on this site is quite amazing. FMD - I'm going to watch some mindless television.

C & B is kidding himself if he claims knowledge about mental illness. I do charity work for an organisation that looks after, helps feed, find housing and jobs for those unfortunate enough to suffer depression and other mental illness like schizophrenia. It's only when you witness the hardship such people endure and how lonely some of them are, that you can really appreciate that above all else, the well being of the person is paramount. I'm proud of my club for the way it's dealing with this and the other ordeals besetting us at the moment and in the recent past.

I don't feel let down by Mitch Clark's honest and elegant exit as a Demon who "will always consider myself a Melbourne player and a Melbourne person." Disappointed that we won't see him taking those big grabs or kicking goals for us but far more disappointed for Mitch and the pain of his ordeal.

As for clowns like C & B, he proves only that the buffoon is often the best benchmark against which we can judge civilized human behaviour by comparison with the garbage he's been spouting above.

Any more and he'll be facing a long holiday from this site.

C&B blew off clinical depression, the most severe form of the illness, as being 'sad'. Stupidity and ignorance all round into one. Stupidity may abound from others but your apparent defense of him, even asking us not to attack him, doesn't make one ounce of sense in this instance.

WCE's handling of Cousin's mental health won them both a premiership.

I'm not arguing that Cousins should have walked away from football, obviously the circumstances and personal issues are very different. But I'll take 'facing the problem and setting out to do the right thing for the player's well-being' well ahead of 'pretend nothing is wrong, let it run and hope not too many of our players get hospitalised with overdoses'.

Depression is not a defined term, it's based on the individual. C&B is probably struggling to understand why Mitch, being the successful footballer, good looking popular man etc etc suffers from depression. And yes it is sad, a very sad situation. Trying to understand it will leave you even more confused.

I'm not defending C+B That's his problem.The point I'm trying to make is that debate about such matters (it's not like arguing who is the fastest or can jump the highest) is pointless and should not be encouraged. For all we know C+B might be fighting his own demons. We just Don't know . So rather than misunderstand or hurt - leave it alone.

when Jason Dunstalls eye socket was pushed into his skull from a Demon knee.

What sort of question is that? Of course you can question someone's knowledge on a topic based on what they say about it.

Especially when they say they work to help people who suffer from it.

Has there been any word from the playing group about this? I know it's a delicate situation but just hoping they're holding up ok. This is where the leaders in that club absolutely have to step up and unite the group.

Major depression is a life threatening illness and doesn't correlate with material possessions ir other externals. I think this discussion has gone far enough beyond saying we wish Mitch every happiness for the future

He only gave up Northern Europe ,and he let the Italians give up the south as they had the experience.

And we are back to our regularly scheduled programming of self righteousness, poorly formed opinions and dark and disturbing thoughts that most sane people keep locked away in the deepest, darkest corners of their minds. All we need now is some incorrect spelling, mangled grammar and chaotically structured syntax and Demonland will be back to it's good old self.

Travel to India and observe the beggar children and the human beings living in the slums in their millions. Then talk on here about depression in those on 700,00 dollars per year.

Depression does not necessarily have anything to do with money or social status... it is a mental illness and as such can affect the wealthiest, most comfortably off as much as it can the poor and homeless... in fact, when I was in India, the kids I saw in the slums and the lepers were generally happier than many people I have seen here.
