Every draft is different, and so would your tactics be when you have high picks.

Those of you that 'wouldn't trade a top 5 pick under any circumstances' are naïve.

If you cannot see the transcendent talent at your pick and you think the talent is going to similar ten places down - you trade down and get something for very little on the way.

Like we did with Tyson, Salem, and Hunt for 2 and 22.

If there is a Judd or a Hodge - FCS keep the pick.

If you think there is a Sylvia and group of McLeans - trade it for something, and move down and pick the last of the McLeans.

We need to build a list.

I like this a lot in using pick 2 for Petracca and moving on pick three similar to last year.

I literally know nothing about Petracca other than what I have read and through everyones optimism it makes me want him a lot (its like the positives of pre-season reports all over again!!)

Is it possible to bring up some stats on the TAC comp to compare to other mids over the previous years? I just worry that we are all getting on the same hype as we did with Watts, Scully etc.

He seems to be the definite number 1 mid in the draft this year and a lot of teams would be desperate for him. Because of this we would get a ridiculously better deal trading pick 2 over pick 3.

watch the footage of him. the kids special, and believe it or not; NOT A SKINNY BASKETBALL LOOKING TYPE, although he is a gun basketballer too.

I seriously think we should trade hard to bring in mature developed talent. trade the picks for player 22 -27 years of age. obviously keep some and use them, but we need to bring immediate talent in asap.

My number 1 is Dangerfield. Have met with a close relative of his and he is 100% confident that he will be back in Victoria next year.

Putting pick 2 up for trade does not mean you are giving it away. Nor does it mean you are scared off by our previous mistakes. You see what is available and you evaluate whether it is better than the player you would likely pick up. The Tyson trade is a great example of that.

Anyway for Petracca we would want a Whitfield, Coniglio, Swallow, Wingard, Kelly, Bontempelli, Mccrae, O Meara, Martin, Bennel or Aish as a minimum

It seems reasonably obvious that losing Frawley via free agency will improve a competitors list without a loss of talent/picks on their end.

Melbourne is already struggling against this team and every other team.

If Melbourne's compensation is not the press advertised pick 3 and is in fact an end of round 1 pick (which is actually likely) the other teams improve and talent wise overall Melbourne decreases overnight.

This is the flaw in free agency as it currently stands whereby lower ladder teams talent moves to better performing teams and the lower teams are expected to successfully replace the talent through the speculation of the draft. And guess what happens when they happen to find and develop a good player....free agency.

Avoiding the disaster of compensation being end of round 1 and guaranteeing a pick after Melbourne's first draft pick is simple. Ask for a priority pick (obviously after a loss) and follow that up by saying top end picks are tradable thereby one team won't be farming top draft talent again (which pisses practically everyone in football off) and end result Melbourne get the pick 2 or 3 compo for Frawley, no Priority picks given and Melbourne can rinse and repeat the 2013 trade period.

Out of all of them I know Conigilio is out of contract come next year as well as a number of GWS players and Bontempelli is about to sign a new comtract. It would have to be next year for the majority of them

That's very true and given GWS may not really want or need picks and may be more interested in players where does the trade come from.

I know you're not a Tyson fan but I think that was a good deal for us, doesn't mean we can just find another one. I think he is a special, hope we can find another.

I am a Tyson fan, i just don't like the idea that we should just give up on the draft and development and try to find trades which result in us being better off after another club did the drafting/development already and at the same time giving another club the opportunity to the next potential superstar of the game.

I look at it like a business, if you setup your own business and once it is up and running decide to sell it, you will always be better off then if you decide to buy a business which has already been setup.
