Melbourne asks for draft assistance

Featured Replies

What's this bs Evans has come out with now? Players have to basically die before a PP will be awarded? Making it up as they go.

It's not a matter of if we deserve. I'm sick of the club bloody asking for hand outs ever other week.

Get your shite together and make the club stand up without asking for charity.

Go to my post 207 and let me know what you think about it.

Just on SEN I heard something about the PP. I caught the back-end of the report so I didn't hear who made the statement, but what I did hear was, "...said it will be unlikely that Melbourne will be granted a priority pick." It was a serious report, not some [censored] journalist making the statement, so I can only assume it was an AFL official.

I think the club is obliged to ask for one, but considering the number of top 10 picks we have, the compensation we're going to get for Frawley, not to mention the cap space we have, I don't think the AFL will give us one.

EDIT: Wow, F-L-O-G is censored?

Barrett says "Forget Handouts Try Fighting".

I have changed my mind on PP's, I agree.

We should start fighting. Below is what I would start fighting for.

An equal draw so everyone shares equally friday nights and the better days and times and the worst days and times.

An end to club's Academies. This year and next the Swans will get 2 boys rated top 5 for a pick 20 in each year.

A direction from the AFL that quality FA's must come to us and other lowly clubs if we offer similar money to the top clubs.

An end to Salary cap benefits of some clubs like the Swans COLA and Carlton's Judd Visy deal.

An end to the avoidance by some clubs of playing at Skilled Stadium.

An end to AFL arrangements that deny clubs like Melbourne, access to players like the American, recently allowed to go only to Collingwood, because we didn't have the money to go to the USA to interview him.

A reduction in the salaries of the executives of the AFL which can lead to more money for the clubs. There will be no problem in replacing them if they decide to leave.

An end to the list benefits of club's like GC and GWS of more players on their list.

An end to working parties of the AFL dominated by Eddie and his selected mates.

Need I go on?

Yes lets start fighting for our fair chance to improve on a level playing field and we can forget the PP.

Given Evans is now telling the media we won't get one, perhaps we should adopt the Barrett method and fight. I would start mentioning the above and more in press conferences to get it all out there. We now have several of the media heavyweights behind us.

If we are to not get a PP so be it, but we need to fight for an even playing field. The rigged competition together with our incompetence in drafting has combined to put us in this position.

Sad, very sad, that we need to ask but that is what it is.

If they deny us again then the whole concept must be scrapped.

It was AFL Operations Manager Mark Evans saying a PP was unlikely because the rule was kept really to deal with some sort of player tragedy scenario? Huh, they make it up as the go. The wording of the rule makes no such reference. Then what is a player tragedy? A death such as Troy Broadbridge or if a player wrecks his knee in a match? Does Mitch C qualify? If the tragedy happens after the draft how do you give a club access to a priority pick? Evans is making it up as he goes.

As the Executive advises the so called independent AFL Commission of Drones you can pencil in a big No.

Edited by Earl Hood

Jackson needs to arrange a meet with Gil...one on one and lay it out. Bypass that corrupt maggot Evans.

So Gil want us to have a chance at being competitive..Yes or No

Basically all agreed on afl 360 that we need one, hoping if we got one a handshake deal with the saints occured ensuring they get mccartin

I think the loss of Mitch Clark needs to be factored in. His departure was due to exceptional circumstances and as such should be covered by the spirit of the rule.

From Patrick Smith:

Melbourne are being rebuilt by AFL goodwill and money. Roos and Jackson will be dragged back inevitably by the previous rancid culture of the club. It is beholden on the AFL and its league clubs that the Demons are not shackled to their past altogether but given a key to a better future. Melbourne need and warrant a priority pick.

I must have missed something. Have they all backed us getting a PP?

Yes

emma quayle doesn't think we 'deserve' one, and her reasoning as to why we won't get one:

Crucially, any recommendation put to the commission would look long and hard at what Melbourne has the opportunity to do in the next three or four years, not what it has failed to do in the three or four just gone. Hogan, Viney, Dom Tyson, Christian Salem, Jimmy Toumpas, Jay Kennedy-Harris have only just started out and should be on a big upswing. Nathan Jones, Jeremy Howe, Jack Trengove, Jack Grimes, Colin Garland, Jack Watts, Neville Jetta, Chris Dawes and others are all good enough to be part of a team that wins a lot more games for some time yet. The Demons have the No. 2 pick in this year's draft, and probably No. 3, too, if Frawley goes. Whether they trade those picks or keep them, they have the chance to use them well.

Should, thanks Emma but will they. We're going back to the crystal ball again like last year and look what happened. The pick is not based on what might happen, it's about what the cold hard evidence tells us. We're no good.

I have doubts about JKH. Toumpas and Salem have shown very little to date. The other players named have shown to date they are not good enough to be part of a team that wins a lot more games.

The Frawley pick if it happens has nothing to do with it.

Just a poor article Emma.

You can add Jurrah to the equation as well, if we are talking tragedy scenarios. We took a big gamble to give indigenous player from a remote community a chance to show what talent is out there. It ultimately failed due to tragic split in Jurrah's community and extended family. Jurrah and Clark gone in tragic circumstances that would put a hole in most Clubs lists!

We lost 2 exceptional footballers to exceptional circumstances in Claek and Jurrah

this requires exceptional assistance, but the AFL are too clueless to see that

If we had those 2 fellas running around wed have 10 wins this year

This is where the accusations of overreaction come into play.

If you remove the GWS game and convert a couple of those losses under a goal into wins, would we even be having this debate? I would suggest not.

Saying you have doubts about JKH who is a first year player that has undeniably shown promise is a sign that the justifications for this are getting totally out of whack.

Some faith needs to be placed in Roos' ability to develop the names that Quayle reels off. And despite this nightmare end to the season, the middle segment showed that the group is coachable. They just feel vulnerable at present with their careers on the line. I'm not defending that as a mindset, but it's a reality.

Yes, we're bad, but we've seen light at the end of the tunnel at different stages this season. I know it's tough, really tough, but more patience is required.

Unless I am mistaken, taking Jurrah cost us Rockliff who was training with us.

We lost Jurrah Clark and Bartram for nothing. 3 of our best 22.

Maybe Emma should see how many of those listed made the U22 sqiad.

A curious position I thought for Emma. Not sure she really gets it to be honest. Problem with many a journo's scribblings, and I rate hers is that its an observation from outside a club. She may not fully comprehend the mechanisms by which a club works.

Maybe she should stick to young talent observations. She suddenly out of her depth

They shouldnt harp on about equalisation when its always the same teams at the top. If they want to keep the competition looking the same every year then the crowds will bore pretty quickly. This years ladder isnt much different to last years and will probably the same again next year. Same [censored] different year.

What about if Richmond were awake that day we beat them?

What if Carlton kicked straight?

What if Essendon put us away in one of the worst halves (the first) of football under Roos?

What if Adelaide had Walker?

What if...

What if we are historically bad and the rule to help the league in this scenario needs to be applied?

I hope the bus to Casey doesn’t roll this weekend…

If you remove a couple of those close losses and add 5 goals to some of our losses to better teams, would we even be having this argument (would it not just be a dead certainty)? A spade is a spade. We have improved on our shizen 2013, but are no better than we were in 2012 and still are a long way off the form of our 2011 side.

As you say, JKH is a first year player who has shown undeniable promise, but he is a long way off cementing himself as a regular AFL player, he has shown signs, but until he cements himself it’s fair to doubt that he will make it.

I have faith in Roos to develop those names, unfortunately I have just as much faith that John Longmire can develop the likes of Membrey, Hannebery, Mitchell, Cunningham, Z.Jones, Bird, Rohan, Reid, Parker, B.Jack, Lloyd and the addition of two top 10 rated academy players over the next 2 years.

Not only does one of the top teams have significantly better senior players, it has significantly better ‘development’ players as well. Add to that GWS and GC. When those teams smash us now with depeleted sides, younger lists and more talent it is hard to see us challenging for a flag in the next 10-15 years, let alone winning one.

Thanks 'rpfc', saved me having to post this, couldn't have said it better.

We may have had a lot of draft picks but we are not alone. The issue for us is that a good deal of them haven't worked out and the pool of talent is diminished because of the xpansion clubs.

We have not been able to replace those picks with talent. So we are getting killed twice. Once because the pool was bare to begin with, twice because we can't replenish.

  • AFLW PREVIEW: Port Adelaide

The undefeated Demons venture across the continent to the spiritual home of the Port Adelaide Football Club on Saturday afternoon for the inaugural match for premiership points between these long-historied clubs. Alberton Oval will however, be a ground familiar to our players following a practice match there last year. We lost both the game and Liv Purcell, who missed 7 home and away matches after suffering facial fractures in the dying moments of the game.

  • AFLW REPORT: Richmond

A glorious sunny afternoon with a typically strong Casey Fields breeze favouring the city end greeted this round four clash of the undefeated Narrm against the winless Tigers. Pre-match, the teams entered the ground through the Deearmy’s inclusive banner—"Narrm Football Weaving Communities Together and then Warumungu/Yawuru woman and Fox Boundary Rider, Megan Waters, gave the official acknowledgement of country. Any concerns that Collingwood’s strategy of last week to discombobulate the Dees would be replicated by Ryan Ferguson and his Tigers evaporated in the second quarter when Richmond failed to use the wind advantage and Narrm scored three unanswered goals.

  • CASEY: Frankston

The late-season run of Casey wins was broken in their first semifinal against Frankston in a heartbreaking end at Kinetic Stadium on Saturday night that in many respects reflected their entire season. When they were bad, they committed all of the football transgressions, including poor disposal, indiscipline, an inability to exert pressure, and some terrible decision-making, as exemplified by the period in the game when they conceded nine unanswered goals from early in the second quarter until halfway through the third term. You rarely win when you do this.

  • AFLW PREVIEW: Richmond

Round four kicks off early Saturday afternoon at Casey Fields, as the mighty Narrm host the winless Richmond Tigers in the second week of Indigenous Round celebrations. With ideal footy conditions forecast—20 degrees, overcast skies, and a gentle breeze — expect a fast-paced contest. Narrm enters with momentum and a dangerous forward line, while Richmond is still searching for its first win. With key injuries on both sides and pride on the line, this clash promises plenty.

  • AFLW REPORT: Collingwood

Expectations of a comfortable win for Narrm at Victoria Park quickly evaporated as the match turned into a tense nail-biter. After a confident start by the Demons, the Pies piled on pressure and forced red and blue supporters to hold their collective breath until after the final siren. In a frenetic, physical contest, it was Captain Kate’s clutch last quarter goal and a missed shot from Collingwood’s Grace Campbell after the siren which sealed a thrilling 4-point win. Finally, Narrm supporters could breathe easy.
