Gus does make every single touch count, but his presence on the field is much, much more than that. It's his pressure acts like chasing and tackling, his desperation, gut running and fearlessness and his never-say die attitude and will to get to the next contest, that make him such a standout. His leadership is also starting to show through. I clearly remember early in the season, Jonesy pointing out where he should stand at stoppages. Now it's Gus directing traffic as often as not. He is an absolute gem, and is learning so quickly.

I have observed his development over the past few months.

It started slow because he wasn't sure where he was in the team.

It didn't take long for him to become a leader and say come with me.

He is showing the nouse and leadership our midfield has lacked for years.

All in the hands of an 18yo. effing amazing.

I know who he reminds me of--- a young Keith Greig.

On the run especially. Same kicking style too. Gives it everything

I'm not big on the Keith Greig comparison. In his 11 games to date Angus has shown he will be a far more physical than Keith ever was.

Greig was a classic outside winger, Brayshaw is possibly better inside than out, but looks like he will be equally at home doing either

Also I will never forgive Keith for being a very poor man's Robbie but somehow ending up with two brownlows.

Hogan had me excited at the start of the year but I'm just beside myself with Brayshaw.

Brayshaw and Hoges will have every other club scrambling to put together monster deals, as these young blokes have already shown they have what it takes to rip the competition apart.

If Petracca is as good as Brayshaw, we might finally be able to stop looking at other clubs lists, thinking, "why not us"

. . . this strange thing where I have to keep reminding myself that he isn’t one of our father-sons. There’s something almost destined or dynastic about Gus being at the Dees, like he’s been part of the fabric forever and there’s absolutely no question that he or Viney would ever go elsewhere. Maybe it’s because of his AIS stint with us and the sense that he was always our genuine first choice pick. Maybe I’m channeling the future. Or maybe he’s just a kid with ten games to his name who seems to actually give a stuff and the Geelong game has softened my brain?

I think Brayshaw stood out before the draft as that ready made player. I thought he was a safer bet than McCartin and Petracca IMO.

McCartin was a relatively secure pick for a forward, Petracca logical high quality draft - with that X factor and upside that list managers look for, but still some risk attached.

Brayshaw was exactly as you see now, quality kid, rounded game, dual sided player, contested ball winner, on field leader, he ticked all the boxes.

I will never understand why guys like Wines, Martin, Brayshaw, Selwood, get overlooked for forwards, or X factor types. There is no way in a hell I'd of taken McCartin before Brayshaw, that was a mistake by St Kilda, while the debate was ongoing about Petracca Vs McCartin, St Kilda ignored the obvious. I think Brayshaw is a future brownlow medal winner, at the very least.

Serial offender of not being able to play on someone taller and heavier than him - amazed we didn't isolate him sooner. That said, we didn't need to so all worked out well.

When Gus was recruited he said he was modelling his game on that of Joel Selwood.

Earlier this week I heard/read several commentators compare his first season and style favourably to Selwood.

I doubt there is a higher compliment that could be paid to Gus.

The other comparison to Selwood's start is he had a few years of 'protection' by senior players getting the taggers, more bumps and thumps.

Because we have Jones, Tyson, Van D and Vince the same start is being afforded Gus.

It is really good that the club has got to the stage where we are 'not throwing new players to the wolves'.

This 'protection' may well help Gus be as good as or an even better player than his poster-player, Selwood.

Bugger the comparisons with Greig, Selwood, Harvey, Pendles and the like. Within two years supporters of other clubs will be using our Gus Brayshaw as the benchmark player for their newly drafted 'guns'. Their hopes will be forlorn!
