Players to target at the end of the year

He showed some flashes of his talent, but ultimately only played a few games due to injury, my point is it wasn't like he came in and won the rising star, people were shocked we rated him as high as we did, turns out those people had little idea, O'Rourke might well be the same, highly talented player, injury interrupted first couple of years, Victorian boy wouldn't cost a top 5 pick and could represent great value for money during trade week.

the original comment from JVFP is that we shouldn't offer more than a second rounder, my comment is that other teams will offer far more than that, the Bulldogs are one I know are interested

The Bulldogs won't be giving up their first round pick for him.

I reckon ROK would be good as medium forward that can put on defensive pressure / on-field coach before transitioning to an off-field role. With him dropping off a bit in pace he probably isn't suited to playing as a permanent mid anymore.

Worst comes to worst he plays at Casey and helps the boys develop there, god knows they need some help at Casey.

the thing we still need most, apart from good players, is on-field leadership. We have the off-field happening atmo, & we do have some leaders but most were drafted by us & have learn't from within our weak old culture.

if we are to fully eradicate the old ways, we need to bring in Old Heads who are from great cultures & are strong of mind & will, & mature level headed enough to direct & teach quietly.

Couldn't do better than RO'K imo... And If I had my way I would put him on 2yrs from the start, as a player & assistant.

I sense he'll be able to play a few games for us each of the next 2 seasons. 13 -15 next year would be great, & if he could stretch it out for a further 10, in 2016, that would be fabulous. Not to mention the games he plays as a playing-assistant at Casey as well, with our kids developing down there under the guidance of a great 300 game player & role model.

just sayin...

there possibly are, luckily people with far more knowledge than ether of us on this subject will make the decision, but from having seem Jono play multiple times in person I can tell you he has a fantastic work rate, wins his own ball, has good skills, and is a pretty handy overall player, I am very confident that like Jimmy Toumpas there is a lot more to him than what we have seen so far.

Wouldn't mind O'Rourke, but he hasn't played enough games yet to suit us. Shiel has some fitness & built a body ready to help us now, and Jaksch is the tall swingman we lack, slightly behind that. Jaksch we can get & develop next year like Salem.

I still see Fitzy as a ruck/follower in progress.

I know the swans seconds comp isn't great but he is consistently getting above 30 touches, had 35 touches a few tackles and a goal on the weekend, the pace thing is a real worry, i'd expect him to play as a medium forward and provide leadership, an upgrade on what Byrnes and Rodan were offering

SPR I accept he is picking up plenty of ball , but we have gone beyond what Byrnes and Rodan were offering, Cross, Vince, Dawes, Jamar have that. Jones has brought his leadership to a new level this season as has Dunn.

Viney and Tyson will continue to grow with another preseason under their belt, sorry but for me my mail again is he has dropped off dramatically and it's nothing to do with wanting to bring through a new generation of players if that was the case Mitchell would be playing. The Swans want a flag and if O'Keefe's fitness was fine he would be playing. NEAFL is a shocking standard of footy

Pass from me, when the end comes it comes very quickly. That's MO

If I were a betting man I'd confidently put $s on ROK becoming a Demon next year it's a no-brain er to me.

O'Rourke has good skills, can find the football and moves really well.

I think he'd be a handy addition to MFC, but I wouldn't be giving away an early pick for him.

If GWS could come up with a suitable deal, where we get O'Rourke and a top 10 pick - then they can have our Frawley compo.

If Frawley goes, it leaves us a little weak in KPD stocks. I'd give our first rounder for both Jaksch and Tomlinson. Gives us 2 swing KPD/KPF to work with.

Go after Shiel and have them throw in O'Rourke for good measure in exchange for the Frawley compo pick.

I think Roosy will give serious consideration to offering ROK a one year contract.

I was against it initially but if it may actually be a punt worth taking.

Sadly we need to keep filling the senior leadership void until we have a set of leaders to take the club forward. That is just the product of poor decisons in the past.

If he's getting 30 touches a week in the seconds he can at least still run, and he's obviously twice the player that Byrnes or Rodan were, albeit a depleted version.

Not a great deal to lose imo.

Yep, total no-brainer and very similar to Cross last year.

Even if he only plays a few games, the training standards he and Crossy lead off-field will have a halo effect on the rest of the players, continuing to set the standard for AFL fitness.

Posted

O'Keefe will still play another 2 years, he is a natural footballer who apparently lives a VERY clean lifestyle.

Having guys like Cross and O'Keefe on our list, is our way of teaching kids an AFL way of life - like Ablett does on the GC.

We need to fast track our youth, having older heads around is essential.

not bad.

I think our 1st pick & 2nd Rndr would get us both Shiel & Jaksch in the one deal.

then I think if we trade our compo pick for a player & pick/s, that would be good as well. maybe the Suns come in here? Player-X + P-15ish + say P-29ish ???

yep, just tell that to Fletch, Boomer, Craig Bradley, Micheal Tuck, et al. oh & by the way Jnr MacDonald as well, even after one season of retirement came back at a ripe age for another 13 odd games, which 2 seasons with us would have potentially had him up around 290+ games in red & blue.

& a great leader of men

That's a bit unrealistic, neither Tomlinson or Shiel have shown anything to suggest that their value has dropped since being drafted. Shiel was listed by GWS as a 17 yr old, but was widely touted as a top 5 pick if he hadn't been (plenty suggesting he would have gone no.1) and Tomlinson was pick 9, which would have been pick 10-13ish once you factor in the players who were pre-listed by the giants.

Forget O'Keefe - TOO OLD!! (and more clogging up of the list).

The big clubs are going after Wingard - so have a crack at him - nothing to lose - Demons must take on the big clubs - NOW!!

When GWS interviewed Wingard before that draft he told them he was a South Australian boy and they would regret taking him if they did as he would head home at the first opportunity, which is why he wasn't taken top 3 in that draft, he has confirmed that himself.

there is no chance he leaves Port Adelaide.

Maybe, but if the likes of Jaksch, Shiel and Tomlinson all say that they want to return to Victoria, it may force GWS' hand a little.

It also helps spread the age of their list a little more, whilst they still receive top picks for them.

Because nobody ever changes their mind as they get older, even when a big bag of money is on offer.......Oh wait.

Some players have, sure.

I don't believe Wingard has any interest in going to any other club, and I don't believe any other club will offer so much that Port couldn't match it.

OH FFS

Fletch is still in the best 22 of a Top 8 side as is Boomer

Bradley was in Carltons best half dozen and club captain when he finished up

Tuck best 22 Premiership Captain

Junior was our captain and best 22 moved on to early

The comparisons are so similar to Ryan O'Keefe

Actually got a sneaky bet on Boomer for top 3 in the brownlow, not a bad effort for an old fella

you don't think RO'K could be in the swans best 22, if they weren't trying to hang onto their kids, so as to not lose them. like they lost lamb last year.

you oughta take up drama PsD, you act like it. :)

THE ACCIDENTAL DEMONS by The Oracle

In the space of eight days, the Melbourne Football Club’s plans for the coming year were turned upside down by two season-ending injuries to players who were contending strongly for places in its opening round match against the GWS Giants. Shane McAdam was first player to go down with injury when he ruptured an Achilles tendon at Friday afternoon training, a week before the cut-off date for the AFL’s pre-season supplemental selection period (“SSP”). McAdam was beginning to get some real mom

RETURN TO NORMAL by Whispering Jack

One of my prized possessions is a framed, autographed guernsey bearing the number 31 worn by my childhood hero, Melbourne’s champion six time premiership player Ronald Dale Barassi who passed away on 16 September 2023, aged 87. The former captain who went on to a successful coaching career, mainly with other clubs, came back to the fold in his later years as a staunch Demon supporter who often sat across the way from me in the Northern Stand of the MCG cheering on the team. Barassi died the
