The demands of AFL football really do weigh these kids down a few kg, not great when your back is struggling aswell.

Firstly, say what you want about Barrett (I can't stand the guy) but he got it right originally on this story and I'm going to guess he's bang on again here. The lack of update this week from the club and the stagnant 4-5 week return date makes me think this.

I very much doubt it's career threatening, but he is OOC end of next year. You can bet the WA clubs will be all over him. That makes me more worried.

Barrett then goes on about speaking with Mahoney and a time frame of being hoping he will be back in the next month, but there is serious doubt on that being the case

He then asks Dawes who (as I said earlier) talks about the club not rushing him back even if that means him not playing this year(although Dawes says he does not believe that will be the case) because the club sees him as a 10 year player.

I think he uses hyperbole to drum up controversy, just as the Gonzo claims. He takes a fact and then embellishes to the point of absolute fabrication. Did Mahoney insinuate that Hogan would never play again? Or was that just Barrett?

Funny how the members get told nothing about Hogan, and find out through alternate means in the media. This footy club still has along way to go in terms of doing the right thing by it's members.

Not surprised really that nothing has been mentioned on the melbournefc.com.au website (the last place to look if you want to know all things MFC).

Looking at it from another angle, surely putting a long-term contract in front of Jesse would show huge support from the MFC, as well as a big vote of confidence, given that he is yet to play a game for us. Hell even get in touch with Mitch to see if he wants to continue to be his mentor.

Big risk in doing so, but Jesse is so young, if he commits long-term to the club, he will have heaps of time on his side to get it right.

I'd be pretty devastated if Hogan refused to re-sign with us and demanded to go home, considering it seems like season 2014 is a write off.

If he has fractured vertabrae, he will not be anywhere near a game this year.

The chance of Freo or WC finishing below us next year is very miniscule. So we should tell him that we will just re-draft him. He isn't a free-agent, so doesn't have anywhere near as much control over where he goes.

Except there's zero point in keeping a disgruntled player on your list. Admittedly Hogan has very little bargaining power (especially having not played a game), so IF he wants to go his only hope is an agreeable trade. He won't risk the PSD because he'd end up back with us.

You could just as easily say he is a guy with a very bad back problem who may never play.

The longer he goes on without playing with his teammates, the longer the delay in him building up any meaningful association with the club and the greater the likelihood of him heading west once his contract finishes. Might sound alarmist but it's an uncomfortable truth as I see it.

As far as leaving goes, I heard he really likes Melbourne the place, likes his team mates and I would presume his Coach. If we end up paying him for not playing this year, I would approach his management at the end of the year or earlier and attempt to extend his contract beyond next year. He appears a decent kid and I think morally he may feel that it is not unreasonable, given we will have paid him for 2 years already and not got one AFL game from him. If he refused to do that, I then think we would be in trouble with him staying beyond 2015.

If you are feeling antsy about this, it is your own fault for not accepting the moment he became a Demon that he would either suffer a career-ending injury before he played a game, or would leave on a 10-year $15M deal to the west after 2 years and become the greatest player of all time.

    As the focus of the AFL moves exclusively to South Australia for Gather Round, the question is raised as to what are we going to get from the  Melbourne Football Club this weekend? Will it be a repeat of the slop fest of the last three weeks that have seen the team score a measly 174 points and concede 310 or will a return to the City of Churches and the scene where they performed at their best in 2024 act as a wakeup call and bring them out of their early season reverie? 
    Or will the sleepy Dees treat their fans to a reenactment of their lazy effort from the first Gather Round of two years ago when they allowed the Bombers to trample all over them on a soggy and wet Adelaide Oval? The two examples from above tell us how fickle form can be in football. Last year, a committed group of players turned up in Adelaide with a businesslike mindset. They had a plan, went in confidently and hard for the football and kicked winning scores against both home teams in a difficult environment for visitors. And they repeated that sort of effort later in the season when they played Essendon at the MCG. Unfortunately, performances like these went against the grain of what Melbourne has been producing from virtually midway through 2024 and extending right through to the present day. This is a game between two clubs who have faltered over the past couple of years because their disposal efficiency is appalling. Neither of them can hit the side of a barn door but history tells us that every once in a while such teams have their lucky days or come up against an opponent in even worse shape and hence, one of them will come up trumps in this match.

    There was a time in the second quarter of the game at the Cattery on Friday afternoon when the Casey Demons threatened to take the game apart against the Cats. The Demons had been well on top early but were struggling to convert their ascendancy over the ground until Tom Fullarton’s burst of three goals in the space of eight minutes on the way to a five goal haul and his best game for the club since arriving from Brisbane at the end of 2023. He was leading, marking and otherwise giving his opponents a merry dance as Casey grabbed a three goal lead in the blink of an eye. Fullarton has now kicked ten goals in Casey’s three matches and, with Melbourne’s forward conversion woes, he is definitely in with a chance to get his first game with the club in next week’s Gather Round in Adelaide. Despite the tall forward’s efforts - he finished with 19 disposals and eight marks and had four hit outs as back up to Will Verrall in the second half - it wasn’t enough as Geelong reigned in the lead through persistent attacks and eventually clawed their way to the lead early in the last and held it till they achieved the end aim of victory.

    I was disappointed to hear Goody say at his post match presser after the team’s 39 point defeat against Geelong that "we're getting high quality entry, just poor execution" because Melbourne’s problems extend far beyond that after its 0 - 4 start to the 2025 football season. There are clearly problems with poor execution, some of which were evident well before the current season and were in play when the Demons met the Cats in early May last year and beat them in a near top-of-the-table clash that saw both sides sitting comfortably in the top four after round eight. Since that game, the Demons’ performances have been positively Third World with only five wins in 19 games with a no longer majestic midfield and a dysfunctional forward line that has become too easy for opposing coaches to counter. This is an area of their game that is currently being played out as if they were all completely panic-stricken.
