Jesse Hogan Injury Update?

Featured Replies

There goes our Scully compo.

You do realise that Hogan's career is not over? Or do you think Dr Barrett is onto something?

He's injured, deal with it.

Haha can't believe people still ambulance chasers like him and Hutchy seriously. Their job is to drum up controversy by talking [censored] most of the time. Would believe something written by an anonymous poster on here before a believed a word of [censored] that dribbled from his pie-hole.

Who wrote that article weeks back about us being in a world of pain re. tall forwards?

Dawes came back for round 4, is it not possible that they are putting a line through Hogan until further notice?

Maybe some time at home, a few weeks of being monitored in a casual environment, and the stress fractures ease...

The demands of AFL football really do weigh these kids down a few kg, not great when your back is struggling aswell.

Firstly, say what you want about Barrett (I can't stand the guy) but he got it right originally on this story and I'm going to guess he's bang on again here. The lack of update this week from the club and the stagnant 4-5 week return date makes me think this.

I very much doubt it's career threatening, but he is OOC end of next year. You can bet the WA clubs will be all over him. That makes me more worried.

FFS just watched it who started this thread, Dazzeldavey try listening to things in context and not sensationalising things. It is what we all criticise the media for

Talk about a play on words, discussion about meeting next week due to lack of responding to current treatment.

Barrett - Jesse Hogan has not responded to initial treatment and right now there is significant on when he will be able to play football again

Garry then interjects with "what again at all" or this year

Barrett is not committal and just says again.

Barrett then goes on about speaking with Mahoney and a time frame of being hoping he will be back in the next month, but there is serious doubt on that being the case

He then asks Dawes who (as I said earlier) talks about the club not rushing him back even if that means him not playing this year(although Dawes says he does not believe that will be the case) because the club sees him as a 10 year player.

That is where it ends

On both occasions, he's quoted club officials in his stories, Josh Mahoney on this occasion.

Why pretend that he's making it up?

I think he uses hyperbole to drum up controversy, just as the Gonzo claims. He takes a fact and then embellishes to the point of absolute fabrication. Did Mahoney insinuate that Hogan would never play again? Or was that just Barrett?

Funny how the members get told nothing about Hogan, and find out through alternate means in the media. This footy club still has along way to go in terms of doing the right thing by it's members.

Not surprised really that nothing has been mentioned on the melbournefc.com.au website (the last place to look if you want to know all things MFC).

Looking at it from another angle, surely putting a long-term contract in front of Jesse would show huge support from the MFC, as well as a big vote of confidence, given that he is yet to play a game for us. Hell even get in touch with Mitch to see if he wants to continue to be his mentor.

Big risk in doing so, but Jesse is so young, if he commits long-term to the club, he will have heaps of time on his side to get it right.

AF (good initials those)

Bad choice of word in "again" by Barrett but went off on a tangent when Gary said what ever again

PSP please stop being a panic merchant

I'd be pretty devastated if Hogan refused to re-sign with us and demanded to go home, considering it seems like season 2014 is a write off.

If he has fractured vertabrae, he will not be anywhere near a game this year.

In short

  • Barrett is sensationalising regarding "serious doubt to when he will be able to play again"
  • Dawes thinks he will be a star and recovery doesn't have a specific frame but not going to rush anything (could very well be this month, the next - who knows - long term priorities)
  • Barrett thinks there will be a meeting... doesn't know which week, or with who, but there will be a meeting (insightful)
  • Barrett still has an ugly baby face

Barrett: "Thank you Gaz, um, talking about a young Melbourne player then in Christian Salem, but there has been a significant set back to another young Melbourne gun [*checks iPad because its too hard to remember 2 names*], by the name of Jesse Hogan.

We know that he is yet to make his AFL début because of stress fractures in his back and what we can tell you tonight is those stress fractures have not responded to the initial rehab program set by down for him by the footy club [*TV in the background showing Hogan stretching his back several times*] and that right now there is serious doubt to when he will be able to play football again. The club today has confirmed to us...

Lyon: [*interjects*] "What, again at all or again this year?"

Barrett: "Again this yea- well he hasn't even played a game as you know and there is serious doubt to when he will be able to play - [*doesn't really answer GL's question and continues to read the Teleprompter which begs the question as to why he has the dicky iPad - it doesn't make him look anymore important than the joke he is*] the club Gaz has confirmed to us today that he has had a set back in what Josh Mahoney, the head of football, said is that the club is compiling all information relating to the stress fracture in his back, there's going to be a meeting this week, or early next week [*good use of not saying a concrete date or week*] with Hogan [*you'd hope so...*] and all other key play-[*stutters*]-people to work out what the next steps are.

I mean Mahoney did say he wanted, expected, or hoped [*which is it?*] Hogan would be back in the side next month but we can tell you that there is serious doubt when that may be the case.

Mahoney did add what they are doing with Hogan is they are committed to what is best for him. We'll just ask Chris while we are talking about Hogan, its obviously tough what he is going through [*why didn't you just wait to ask Hawkins... he could tell you from first hand experience*]

Dawes: "Yeah definitely, I think you know the frustration for him being a young bloke with a lot of hype around him and the fact that we need key forwards out there that will be the most frustrating thing for him but, ah, I think the club has said and they're going to take what I think is the right approach which is not worry about him playing this season - although I think he will he could well play in a month - they'll worry about a young key position bloke who's going to be a star for 10 years and they'll wont rush him. Particularly with a back injury, there's no point trying to rush him back risking further damage"

[*Fin*]

The chance of Freo or WC finishing below us next year is very miniscule. So we should tell him that we will just re-draft him. He isn't a free-agent, so doesn't have anywhere near as much control over where he goes.

Except there's zero point in keeping a disgruntled player on your list. Admittedly Hogan has very little bargaining power (especially having not played a game), so IF he wants to go his only hope is an agreeable trade. He won't risk the PSD because he'd end up back with us.

We would not give him up lightly though, and Freo/WC would bend over backwards to make the deal worth our while. This kid is a ten-year untapped superstar.

Remember he has not played a game yet.

You could just as easily say he is a guy with a very bad back problem who may never play.

The longer he goes on without playing with his teammates, the longer the delay in him building up any meaningful association with the club and the greater the likelihood of him heading west once his contract finishes. Might sound alarmist but it's an uncomfortable truth as I see it.

Him not playing this season would be a disaster in terms of trying to keep him here. Not to mention in terms of the season itself.

So he plays in 2015 having Roos as his coach and builds a rapport and relationship with his teammates.

He kicks 50 goals in his debut year and signs on for 3 more.

Easy.

Hope you are right.

I think we may have to accept that he might not play this year. Frustrating for him more than us.

As far as leaving goes, I heard he really likes Melbourne the place, likes his team mates and I would presume his Coach. If we end up paying him for not playing this year, I would approach his management at the end of the year or earlier and attempt to extend his contract beyond next year. He appears a decent kid and I think morally he may feel that it is not unreasonable, given we will have paid him for 2 years already and not got one AFL game from him. If he refused to do that, I then think we would be in trouble with him staying beyond 2015.

Again I find myself agreeing with you Redleg you have put the case well

If you are feeling antsy about this, it is your own fault for not accepting the moment he became a Demon that he would either suffer a career-ending injury before he played a game, or would leave on a 10-year $15M deal to the west after 2 years and become the greatest player of all time.

Sorry, what exactly is it you think we found out from DB?

He quoted Mahoney as saying he "hopes" Hogan will be back within a month.

Other than that, it's all vague sensationalism.

FFS, think!

Leaving aside last night and Db I remember you saying many positive things about Clark's return Machsy.

Hmm that did turn out so well.

  • PREVIEW: Essendon

As the focus of the AFL moves exclusively to South Australia for Gather Round, the question is raised as to what are we going to get from the  Melbourne Football Club this weekend? Will it be a repeat of the slop fest of the last three weeks that have seen the team score a measly 174 points and concede 310 or will a return to the City of Churches and the scene where they performed at their best in 2024 act as a wakeup call and bring them out of their early season reverie?
Or will the sleepy Dees treat their fans to a reenactment of their lazy effort from the first Gather Round of two years ago when they allowed the Bombers to trample all over them on a soggy and wet Adelaide Oval? The two examples from above tell us how fickle form can be in football. Last year, a committed group of players turned up in Adelaide with a businesslike mindset. They had a plan, went in confidently and hard for the football and kicked winning scores against both home teams in a difficult environment for visitors. And they repeated that sort of effort later in the season when they played Essendon at the MCG. Unfortunately, performances like these went against the grain of what Melbourne has been producing from virtually midway through 2024 and extending right through to the present day. This is a game between two clubs who have faltered over the past couple of years because their disposal efficiency is appalling. Neither of them can hit the side of a barn door but history tells us that every once in a while such teams have their lucky days or come up against an opponent in even worse shape and hence, one of them will come up trumps in this match.

  • PREGAME: Essendon

Facing the very real and daunting prospect of starting the season with five straight losses, the Demons head to South Australia for the annual Gather Round, where they’ll take on the Bombers in search of their first win of the year. Who comes in, and who comes out?

  • NON-MFC: Round 05

Gather Round is here, kicking off with a Thursday night blockbuster as Adelaide faces Geelong. The Crows will be out for redemption after a controversial loss last week. Saturday starts with the Magpies taking on the Swans. Collingwood will be eager to cement their spot in the top eight, while Sydney is hot on their heels. In the Barossa Valley, two rising sides go head-to-head in a fascinating battle to prove they're the real deal. Later, Carlton and West Coast face off at Adelaide Oval, both desperate to notch their first win of the season. The action then shifts to Norwood, where the undefeated Lions will aim to keep their streak alive against the Bulldogs. Sunday’s games begin in the Barossa with Richmond up against Fremantle. In Norwood, the Saints will be looking to take a scalp when they come up against the Giants. The round concludes with a fiery rematch of last year's semi-final, as the Hawks seek revenge for their narrow loss to Port Adelaide. Who are you tipping this week and what are the best results for the Demons besides us winning?

  • CASEY: Geelong

There was a time in the second quarter of the game at the Cattery on Friday afternoon when the Casey Demons threatened to take the game apart against the Cats. The Demons had been well on top early but were struggling to convert their ascendancy over the ground until Tom Fullarton’s burst of three goals in the space of eight minutes on the way to a five goal haul and his best game for the club since arriving from Brisbane at the end of 2023. He was leading, marking and otherwise giving his opponents a merry dance as Casey grabbed a three goal lead in the blink of an eye. Fullarton has now kicked ten goals in Casey’s three matches and, with Melbourne’s forward conversion woes, he is definitely in with a chance to get his first game with the club in next week’s Gather Round in Adelaide. Despite the tall forward’s efforts - he finished with 19 disposals and eight marks and had four hit outs as back up to Will Verrall in the second half - it wasn’t enough as Geelong reigned in the lead through persistent attacks and eventually clawed their way to the lead early in the last and held it till they achieved the end aim of victory.

  • REPORT: Geelong

I was disappointed to hear Goody say at his post match presser after the team’s 39 point defeat against Geelong that "we're getting high quality entry, just poor execution" because Melbourne’s problems extend far beyond that after its 0 - 4 start to the 2025 football season. There are clearly problems with poor execution, some of which were evident well before the current season and were in play when the Demons met the Cats in early May last year and beat them in a near top-of-the-table clash that saw both sides sitting comfortably in the top four after round eight. Since that game, the Demons’ performances have been positively Third World with only five wins in 19 games with a no longer majestic midfield and a dysfunctional forward line that has become too easy for opposing coaches to counter. This is an area of their game that is currently being played out as if they were all completely panic-stricken.

  • NON-MFC: Round 04

Round 4 kicks off with a blockbuster on Thursday night as traditional rivals Collingwood and Carlton clash at the MCG, with the Magpies looking to assert themselves as early-season contenders and the Blues seeking their first win of the season. Saturday opens with Gold Coast hosting Adelaide, a key test for the Suns as they aim to back up their big win last week, while the Crows will be looking to keep their perfect record intact. Reigning wooden spooners Richmond have the daunting task of facing reigning premiers Brisbane at the ‘G and the Lions will be eager to reaffirm their premiership credentials after a patchy start. Saturday night sees North Melbourne take on Sydney at Marvel Stadium, with the Swans looking to build on their first win of the season last week against a rebuilding Roos outfit. Sunday’s action begins with GWS hosting West Coast at ENGIE Stadium, a game that could get ugly very early for the visitors. Port Adelaide vs St Kilda at Adelaide Oval looms as a interesting clash, with both clubs form being very hard to read. The round wraps up with Fremantle taking on the Western Bulldogs at Optus Stadium in what could be a fierce contest between two sides with top-eight ambitions. Who are you tipping this week and what are the best results for the Demons besides us winning?
