Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

AFL NATIONAL DRAFT - Pick 9

What

Freeman at pick 9 is hilarious, the kid can't kick.

He looks like a poor mans Liam Picken.

Wow

That is literally one of the more ridiculous posts I have seen on here

and that is saying something.

Just from the fun of closely watching the videos, and yes, we know that means 3/5ths of fa, I can't split Freeman and Salem. Freeman is unique with his pace and decent endurance, not to mention he's also good inside, and Salem screams quality to me. Smart, good decisions, a bit more outside, but tough and a brilliant left foot kick. I suppose I'm a bit more excited as to what Freeman could become. A quicker better version of Shuey.

Those two and Lennon.

Let's hope they're 200 + game champions so we don't have the chance to get it wrong, again..

3 minutes of selective footage is hardly conclusive but Freeman hits about 1 target in that whole set so there is a concern there I reckon.

On the plus side a few of those disposals he has to get it on the boot under great pressure and he's very quick to do so.

That's the bit that worries me about Freeman, and again on selective viewing. He doesn't seem to have an awareness of other options and they are there for the exceptional talent, and that's what we are looking for with this pick. When I see footage of Tyson I see this awareness and it's what will make him a very good get. The really good mids see the game in slow motion (Tyson does), Freeman on limited viewing doesn't seem to.

You are wrong.. 6 minute footage I saw he had 18 of his kicks hit targets and that includes goals. I didn't count the handballs but a lot of them aswell hit targets.

Majority of his disposal are hitting their targets.

Seriously some of you are over exaggerating about his disposal. Its only a minor decencies that will get ironed out once in the AFL system like Nathan Jones. In fact Jones was far worse then this.

Patrick Dangerfield, Aaron Davey, Nathan Jones, Luke Shuey all had questionable disposal when was drafted.

Nothing to worry about.

True.

And there's more footage there now than when I last watched too.

Kicks:

Target = 13, Goals = 4

Contest/turnover = 9

Inconclusive video = 3

Handballs

Target = 6

He looked a lot better than I first thought and the extended footage just confirmed his electrifying breakaway pace.

He will be fine mate, I trust our development now with Roos and Stone in charge.. He will be an absolute beauty!

I see Lennon less as a mid, so I'd prefer not.

I think I get seduced because I see him as being very alike to Steve Johnson, and because I would hate to see him playing for Collingwood.

You're probably right that Freeman and Salem suit us better.

Looks like Kolodjasnij won't last, and Scharenberg is unlikely to get past Brisbane.

It's a bit like walking in to a cake shop (I love cakes) and being told you can only choose one; no matter what, you will always look at the plate next to you and wonder if you made the right choice.

I just wish we had picks 6, 7, 8 & 9.

Which will be a pure bred midfielder, imo, ergo not Lennon.

We have to select a mid. Will select a mid. I have no idea about which mid they'll pick but you mentioned Salem and Freeman. Did you also say Salem is a left footer? I'm wondering if they are both there at 9 and the club is 50/50 if being a left footer might sway us to Salem. I reckon left footers have a small advantage as when they have the ball opposition players often instinctively cover the right side and they get a bit more space.

Along with mids we really need players with a grade kicking skills so i'm sure that will come in to the mix. Is Salem considered a good kick?

I wouldn't count Lennon out, he has the attributes to make a very good mid. Some of the current top mids where not what you would call pure bred mids in junior years.

He might not ever have the engine (to be a true mid), but he sure looks a good player.

Yeah, I thought his disposal was fine too. I like that he seems able to deliver long (and to goal easily from 50m), medium & short with equal effectiveness. Also that the delivery to him was pretty poor on a number of occasions - they just put it out in space somewhere around him and relied on him to do the rest.

The only minor quibble was that he tends to chip his short kicks rather than spear them low and hard like Flash. But very few U18's do that anyway.

He's definitely got the hang of kicking into space for a teammate to run onto, and kicking to the side of a contest that gives his teammate the advantage. Which immediately puts him ahead of most of our best 22 of 2013.

    MELBOURNE BUSINESS by The Oracle

In days of old, this week’s Thursday night AFL match up between the Demons and the Blues would be framed on the basis of the need to redress the fact that Carlton “stole” last year’s semi final away from Melbourne and with it, their hopes for the premiership.  A hot gospelling coach might point out to his charges that they were the better team on the night in all facets and that poor kicking for goal and a couple of lapses at the death cost them what was rightfully theirs. Moreover, now was

UNDER THE PUMP by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons have been left languishing near the bottom of the VFL table after suffering a 32-point defeat at the hands of stand alone club Williamstown at Casey Fields on Sunday. The Demons suffered a major setback before the game even started when AFL listed players Ben Brown, Marty Hore and Josh Schache were withdrawn from the selected side. Only Schache was confirmed as an injury replacement, the other two held over as possible injury replacements for Melbourne’s Thursday night fixt

THE MEANING OF FOOTY by Whispering Jack

Throughout history various philosophers have grappled with the meaning of life. Aristotle, Aquinas, Kant, Nietzsche, Schopenhauer and a multitude of authors of diverse religious texts all tried. As society became more complex, the question became attached to specific endeavours in life even including sporting pursuits where such questions arose among our game’s commentariat as, “what is the meaning of football”? Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin must be tired of dealing with such a dilemma but,

LEADERS OF THE PACK by The Oracle

I was asked to write a preview of this week’s Round 8 match between Melbourne and Geelong. The two clubs have a history that goes right back to the time when the game was starting to become an organised sport but it’s the present that makes the task of previewing this contest so interesting. Both clubs recently reached the pinnacle of the competition winning premiership flags in 2021 and 2022 respectively, but before the start of this season, many good judges felt their time had passed - n
