Colin Sylvia going ... going ... GONE!

He said he would stay. Another liar.

Are we at a 100% strike rate at losing free agents?

What can we expect as a club that can't afford to pay 100% of its cap.

agree ... free agency makes the stronger clubs STRONGER

Tigers get Chaplin & Knights

Freo gets Pearce & Sylvia

Pies get Lynch and Young

Swans get Franklin

Cats get Rivers

Money and premiership glory as a carrot

more fool you for beleiving him

He heard about Roosy's no d1ckhead policy and knew the jig was up.

He's a high half-forward finisher, but an average midfielder. He's never made a difference to our on-field fortunes and frees up some cap space.

I genuinely wish him well.

Bet his just [censored] off about not being in the DL banner

Stronger? Out of those five teams and their picks, I would suggest that only Buddy is a good pick-up. Chaplain and Knights are foot-soldiers, Pearce & Sylvia flakey, Lynch & Young a bust, Rivers not much more than back-up.

My concern is not that it makes strong clubs stronger but that it makes the weaker clubs weaker.

Rivers leaving us did nothing for Geelong. But it hurt us.

Under the old system they would've given up a 2nd or 3rd (more likely) round pick for Rivers. Now we still could've got that in compensation but they still get their pick. So they haven't lost it.

The old system saw clubs like the saints take a fall after drafting too many mature duds - Peake, Jesse Smith, Andrew Lovett. Which then meant they lost precious draft picks to develop. Now they get those guys for free and still get their draft picks. They double dip and stay at the top. We stay at the bottom and have no priority pick for a jump start up the ladder.

Now in time a free agency market develops. A lot of players are still in contracts that had them avoiding Gold Coast and GWS. That will change soon and more names will become available. But that's not a good thing for the game necessarily.

all you had to say

and compensation ... must be end of round 1 pick (pick 18).

We can then get a young gun such as Billy Hartung or Trent Dumont

How do you get end of Round 1 pick as compensation?

It's highly unlikely.

If Sylvia's chasing a premiership, he might not be offered huge coin (which so far seems the major determinant of compensation picks.)

As RFPC says, we'll likely get a Band 3 or possibly worse - depending on the coin involved.

I wish him well, but he's in for a hell of a shock trying to keep up with Freo's work rate.

sylvia leaving is more likely to be a mid to late 2nd round pick. if it werent for his consistent season it might have been a third round pick.

This is an automated message from the word police.

You have been caught using a word incorrectly.

The word you need is "he's".

If the contraction is too hard for you, write it out in full - "he is".

End message.

Similar career-path to Travis Johnstone, really. High draft pick with bucketloads of talent and high expectations, but ultimately apart from glimpses here and there, he never quite delivered.

Johnstone spent his twilight years in Brisbane without much success while we gained a pick that got us Jack Grimes. Let's hope we can make similar use of the compo pick this time too.

ps. I still hold onto hope that he stays.

10 years in 2nd gear.

Thanks Col.

no. Thanks to our selections of board members for 23d odd years.

On the plus side, it'll be good to see Colin Sylvia reach his potential.

Scully, rivers, McLean, Moloney and now Sylvia. Wow.

You should check the punctuation rules around the use of quotation marks one day. :)

They are all top 10 picks not sure on Rivers......name me a club that has lost so many....

So the AFL fine us for tanking, deny us a priority pick , & yet the premiership Swans have Tippett & Buddy...

I guess thats equalization......WTF!

Yep, an average mid at best. Too many on here have been talking him up because of his size but he doesn't give much in the middle.

I honestly don't think Roos will be overly concerned, spoke all the right words but that was about it.

Free agency only helps clubs in contention and denudes those not.

The AFL scheme gives supporters at the dogs, north and here no hope.
