Two main reasons why Hawthorn won (or more aptly, Fremantle lost):

1. Bad kicking for goal. Enough said on the kicking, but in the first half the main problem was the places they were taking the shots from. Too many shots were taken from 40-60 metres out, and with that early squally wind that was stupid. Hawthorn's goals came from close range (or Gunston, who almost never misses).

2. Subbing Clarke off. Bailey was always going to be taken off so they were probably planning on it, but in the fourth quarter when Fremantle went forward, there was just nothing there for them. Pavlich was the only forward. It let Lake play loose and he continued to mark their inside 50s. Clarke was doing his job, nothing special but he was providing Sandilands with support. In the fourth the two ruckmen should have alternated between ruck and FF to man up Lake and provide a target. Massive mistake from Lyon, I think.

In the end, Hawthorn was clearly the best side this year and deserved the flag. Hopefully they go away now.

I thought they would take Clarke off but you are right it probably wasn't a great move. Early in the game Clarke was a liability forward and Hawthorn easily ran the ball out but later in the game Clarke started to come into his own and as they say he wasn't going to get any shorter, his height could have given them an advantage.

Not sure about that Dan. The Big Pav and The Monster are getting on/injuries. Difficult guys to replace.

True they will have holes to fill. I do really rate their young talent. They have some scary young and mid career footballers.

A lot of teams lose GF's and come up the next year and a lot of teams win them at their first attempt, you just have to take your chances when you get a shot.

I thought in this game it would make a difference and it did. If the game was played again I would tip freo.

True. Their midfield is pretty handy but up forward ,except for flashes of Pav ,they looked ordinary. I wonder where they might be looking for one in the next year or two? Reckon we might be on notice.

One of a very few unbiased comments.

The hawks win this if had been played on the moon.

Just too good the rest is sour grapes!

Really? No thought then of what may have happened (on planet earth) if Freo had managed to kick straight early on?

As much as I'm not fond of Hawthorn, they were the best throughout the year and I'd much prefer to watch their style of footy than Freo's, so it was a good thing that Freo didn't win and set the style for the next 10 years. What sort of grapes is that I wonder?

Let me preface this with the fact that I had a vested interest in Freo....

...but

the umpring here was the worst that I can remember on GF day.

The Buddy "50 m" and the Roughhead free goal, just kill you in a low scoring granny.

Also, the AFL were petrified about showcasing a stoppage-fest. So they put pressure on the umpires pre-game to get it flowing and pay frees etc. They rushed the Freo-boys especially when they took a mark....it was ridiculous.

I thought they let it go too much times but there you go people view things in different ways.

I also thought that although Freo missed some shots early that the Hawks were well on top in general play. I think they won the game fair and square.

...and I thought it was a very average game of football.

I had some doubts about the umpiring too. I thought they were far too keen on paying holding the ball, I suspect because they were told not to let Fremantle's overly defensive game ruin the GF.

    CROSSROADS by The Oracle

Melbourne stands at the crossroads.  Sunday’s game against the West Coast Eagles who have not met the Demons at the MCG in more than ten years, is a make or break for the club’s finals aspirations.  That proposition is self-evident since every other team the club will be opposed to over the next eight weeks of footy is a prospective 2024 finalist. To add to this perspective is the fact that while the Demons are now in twelfth position on the AFL table, they are only a game and a half b

    DELUGE by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons overcame their inaccuracy and the wet inhospitable conditions to overrun the lowly Northern Bullants at Genis Steel Oval in Cramer Street, Preston on Saturday. It was an eerie feeling entering the ground that in the past hosted many VFA/VFL greats of the past including the legendary Roy Cazaly. The cold and drizzly rain and the sparse crowd were enough to make one want to escape to the nearby Preston Market and hang out there for the afternoon. In the event, the fans

    INSANITY by Whispering Jack

Somehow, the Melbourne Football Club managed it twice in the course of a week. Coach Simon Goodwin admitted it in his press conference after the loss against the Brisbane Lions in a game where his team held a four goal lead in the third term:   "In reality we went a bit safe. Big occasion, a lot of young players playing. We probably just went into our shell a bit. "There's a bit to unpack in that last quarter … whether we go into our shells a bit late in the game."   Well
