and you dont think this has ANYTHING to do with picking the WRONG BLOODY players ??

Theres a chance that a couple in recent draftings might go the distance but look back to the fwits in charge and the sterling job they did.

Quite possibly they picked in JW a player who had cruised through footy but had no real appetite for the big game

OK so what pick would Watts have gone at if we didn't take him? What about Cale Morton? They went exactly where they were supposed to it had nothing to do with our selection process. That's a simple fact that I have mentioned at least 50 times over the years and not one of you blokes has ever even tried refuting it cos it is irrefutable. You can't blame our recruitment it is another failure of logic.

I often find myself in disagreement with C&B, but here he is spot on. I can't recall many selections we made which at the time were controversial. (Hindsight not permitted.) Maybe a bit of arguing around the edges but nothing jaw dropping. Clearly development is a big part of the picture, maybe mixed with a bit of bad luck in taking players who were also popular with other clubs but who turned out to be duds.

Players like Morton showed real promise.

All these high picks have potential to absolutely dominate in the AFL, yet they arent developed properly.

It's the lack of resources and developing potential that we have had, not bad picks.

Strauss, Blease and Cook are three that come to mind.

All three were thought to a round or two too early.

Quite likely young'un. I'm even older than you.

But I bet you could find several such cases at every club. If I'm right (memory too faint to be sure) then clearly something different was happening at MFC.

well we did have a choice with JW didnt we. Yes its that old chestnut. its one I used to ignore but ignore I can no more. One attacks the game with ferocity another wants to hold the hand of the new coach !!

You wont get all the selections right, no one does but by god we got a hell of a lot of them wrong.. Or would you say we got them right ??

nope I can only pay Cook on that, so that's 1 out of 45.. in any case the bloke never played a game.. that's some real bad luck there isn't it, or would have another club got him on the park?

again, you need to apply logic. In 45 swings of the bat you have to connect every now and then.

you seriously reckon both Strauss and Blease have upheld the value of their picks

I'm not saying we got them either right or wrong. I'm saying the end resultant spudfest has nought,to very little, to do with the selections process

As I said your memory is slipping.

OK go ahead and substantiate your claim then instead of just saying it and claiming it is gospel.

'A round or two' you say, so show me some evidence that the general consensus was that Blease and strauss should have gone in the mid 30s or even as low as 50. Kidding yourself.

C and B we are never going to agree on this one.

I am from the "crap selection" group and you are from the "our selection was ok we just can't develop them " group.

So there is nothing to be gained by insulting each other.

We are were we are and hopefully a new board and FD we cure the problem over the next three years.

Blease was drafted in where expected. Some had him going to Collingwood just around our pick.

Strauss was drafted a head of expected. BP at the time talked about his exceptional kicking off half back making him an important cog in a future team. Still could be. He's a great kick, just needs the other aspects of his game, it's not completely out of this world.

Cook was a round early. Howe was a bolt from the blue but not completely unexpected.

Gysberts some had as a second rounder, not sure many had top 12.

Either way Prendergast was a bad recruited out of his depth and our development was even worse.

Not to argue for its own sake but thats akin to saying a yield is not beholden upon the quality of the seed. All else the same..weather etc.. good seed returns more than poor quality or so /so. Arguably theres is some effect of nurturing thereafter but if we assume, and for the most part I cant see why not , that all the players were similarly treated, either with contempt, misunderstanding or other, then it still comes down to the player in the first place.

It is an area i think we are taking strides in. Still not there , but vastly improved . Our idea of what is a football player seems to have matured ( still much room for improvement however

Really interested to see where Roos plays Watts, has the assets to play many roles.

He will need to run much harder than he currently does to play that role well, but i agree, if Roos gets him able to run hard enough and he likes the role he would be extremely damaging on a win

Let's just say you are right about Strauss, Cook and Gysberts and they all should have gone 5/10/15 picks later. That doesn't even change anything.. because surely we should be getting some success stories from the second round anyway. Other clubs do this. See what I mean? Whatever way you look at it we are still scoring at close to zero percent strike rate after several years of above-average quality picks. This is being discussed cos GNF said JW is entitled to consider leaving because we haven't provided a club that is of league standard and I have to agree with him. I really hate to say it but you know there has to be a feeling amongst current players and future draftees that Melbourne is NOT the club you want to get drafted to. Not if you have dreams of being an a-grader anyway.

its the only position I think he can realisticaly grow into and its perfectly suited to his abilites...except for the tank...That can be grown. He IS a very good reader of the play.

Yeah, i think if i was coach, and looking at our list i am pretty happy that's not the case, i'd probably play him as a high half forward/ wingman,

Clark Dawes and Hogan would be having wet dreams over Toumpas and Watts having the ball in their hands and passing it into them, both amazing users of the ball.

First you have to get the ball D26

that is our major problem

No it isn't. Our problem is that we can't accrue long chains of uncontested possession; that's why our possession count is so low every week, and our "goals from turnovers" stat is usually in the -60 points range. If we could clean this up, we'd be a ten goal better side.

    CROSSROADS by The Oracle

Melbourne stands at the crossroads.  Sunday’s game against the West Coast Eagles who have not met the Demons at the MCG in more than ten years, is a make or break for the club’s finals aspirations.  That proposition is self-evident since every other team the club will be opposed to over the next eight weeks of footy is a prospective 2024 finalist. To add to this perspective is the fact that while the Demons are now in twelfth position on the AFL table, they are only a game and a half b

    DELUGE by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons overcame their inaccuracy and the wet inhospitable conditions to overrun the lowly Northern Bullants at Genis Steel Oval in Cramer Street, Preston on Saturday. It was an eerie feeling entering the ground that in the past hosted many VFA/VFL greats of the past including the legendary Roy Cazaly. The cold and drizzly rain and the sparse crowd were enough to make one want to escape to the nearby Preston Market and hang out there for the afternoon. In the event, the fans

    INSANITY by Whispering Jack

Somehow, the Melbourne Football Club managed it twice in the course of a week. Coach Simon Goodwin admitted it in his press conference after the loss against the Brisbane Lions in a game where his team held a four goal lead in the third term:   "In reality we went a bit safe. Big occasion, a lot of young players playing. We probably just went into our shell a bit. "There's a bit to unpack in that last quarter … whether we go into our shells a bit late in the game."   Well

    UNBACKABLE by The Oracle

They’re billing the Brisbane Lions as a sleeping giant — the best team outside the top eight —and based on their form this month they’re a definite contender for September AFL action. Which is not exactly the best of news if you happen to be Melbourne, the visiting team this week up at the Gabba.  Even though they are placed ahead of their opponent on the AFL table, and they managed to stave off defeat in their last round victory over North Melbourne, this week’s visitors to the Sunshi
