We must trade pick 2

Our only strength is in the bigs and so if we want an underperforming midfielder from another club (performing one's won't want to leave) or a second round draft pick, then we will have to trade a big. I agree though Fitzy may need to be kept because who really knows if Clark will play again and Dawes doesn't like doing ruck work and realistically Hogan and Watts are a bit small to be the back up ruckman.

If Spencer is kept, then we can afford to lose either Jamar or Gawn, but both are contracted for next year - so I suspect we will end up not trading any bigs and just delisting about nine players.

Back to point of topic, which is superfluous anyway.

What gun midfielder from another club would want to head to Melbourne?

Our best bet is to take James Aish with pick 2 - his game against Sturt two weeks ago won me over on him.

It would be great if a couple of quality running types were still around for our next pick - approx 20 - Blake Acres is a smooth mover or happy to take punt on Dale Garlett if he's still around.

Then at pick 38 approx, we should go for someone like Chris Cain, who would add run and carry to our midfield.

After that it doesn't really matter as its all guesswork from there.

I don't think that is entirely true. A lot of young mids can start having a decent impact in their 2nd years. It is the Key position players that generally take 4-6 years to come on. I agree we need to bring in some ready to go mids but it would be very stupid to trade away a top pick for someone who isn't worth it. In the end if we get a situation like Judd wanting to go home then we should try but if it's someone like a Bernie Vince or a Taylor Adams I'd rather hold onto the pick and look for other sides fringe mids with our lower picks. Remember a lot of other sides fringe mids would walk into our midfield so they will still help from the get go while we develop our young kids. When the Tigers were in the same sort of hole we are in they didn't trade away a top pick they brought in Houli and Grigg cheap and they are both now mainstays in their side.

The idea is ok but in principle, it sounds good. Let's get some good mids into the club and trade some picks for them. The practice is a whole different thing...who are these mids that we can get? and don't name Griffen, Dangerfield, Fyfe etc. these type of players are not available.

We could get nqr's or pensioners, neither type are worth a high pick.

The issue we have had at the club is the inability to develop players. So for our club it has taken longer tan some clubs to get these young guys up and running, perhaps that can change, perhaps its the players we selected, im not sure.

Im undecided what picks i would trade given the decision, it would obviously depend on the available mature mids.

I think particularly a club like freo may trade a mid. Your right, it would be harder to pick up a Griffen, who i think given the right deal - is still getable. The dogs need fwds and youth.

But fyfe is prob not gettable, However Mzungu perhaps, freo has a few quality mids that havnt snagged big names yet.

I would imagine a top pick wouldnt be required for some of these guys.

Hanley is another player we could target - bris

And although i dont know if i want any of them, i imagine collingwood is struggling to pay all their players the desired wages- due to paying cloke a s*** load. A pies mid such as a thomas is gettable if we wanted him.

Cooney is another, somewhat attractive but has a degenerative knee.

There are quality players out there, its not going to be a jobey wan kenobi or a sammy mitchel but we prob wont have to give up a top pick either.

The trouble with players like Mzungu is that it's hard to know how well they would play outside the Freo system. Some players work well in their environment and not at other clubs.

Griffen I don't think is gettable at all, he will step up as their skipper next season.

Thomas has the work rate and ability we require and I would see him as a target, given he is fit and able to remain fit although there are some doubts about that. Whether he would be interested in us is another matter.

Anyone who wants us to trade early picks for the best on offer because we cant afford to wait for kids to develop should watch Wingard and Crouch carve it up in the Showdown today and wonder if they would want to miss out on the similar if we got the pick right.

We are not a charity case, if we give up any picks, they'd want to be for a Crouch, Wingard or Wines type players.

Players get home sick, we should be asking questions to any young talent.

There is our problem, we got it wrong nearly all of the time.

I agree though, if we get it right there are good kids coming through.

Undecided on the question of trading pick 2. The possibility of a PP may induce a trade. Worth remembering that many draft watchers have said that apart from Boyd, the draft is not strong this year, particulary given that Martin (GC) and Hogan are out of the equation. There is sure to be a good mid at pick 2, but would they be a stand out? Not sure.

We need to back ourselves to get it right.

Prendergast is gone and despite peoples argument over Toumpas vs Wines, don't really see a lot wrong with the players we took in the draft last year. And I am not talking about the older senior players. Also impressed with Matt Jones & Clisby

We must keep pick 2

Look at this CHad Wingard kid from Port

19 years old and this season is averaging 22 touches and has booted 35 goals already. A high pick that has a quiet rookie season and has exploded.

Nothing, but Ill back in Roos, Choco or Eade to get our player development right as they have all done it before with distinction.

Jack, you are a drop kick with no brain. How did Ollie play today numb nuts? Why not compare his stats to the Toump over the last month. If you bothered to do any homework you would see that there is nothing in it. Toump is more damaging with ball in hand. Still want Ollie d$$k h@@d????

Our chat is done, ciao wacker.

Did you read my post correctly or just see what you wanted to see. Prendergast is no longer part of our recruiting so I am talking about all those drafted in 2012.

But feel free to tell me based on all those who have yet to play a full season your saying we got it wrong with Toumpas, Kent, Clisby, Terlich, Hogan, Viney, Jones.

Way to early to call on all of these players, none of these boys are our problem!

PSD, don't waste your time with this [censored]. He will go on about how all those boys are "spuds" and "girls". Clisby, Terlich, Viney and Jones are gong to be 10/15 year players for us. Hogan = Gun!! Toump and Kent, with a good pre season will prove to be brilliant running ball users.

Ollie had 7 tackles today, our highest on the weekend was 4.

Wines represents hard work and having a crack, not sitting on the outside and looking pretty hitting a target every now and then.

The MFC is desperately in need of these players.

Ollie Vs Toumpas? Seriously, not even a comparison and never was.

Don't insult Ollie Wines, for christs sake.

You can read [censored]! Any one can tackle and "have a crack" as you so eloquently put it. I'm not insulting Ollie, just pointing out that his last month of numbers are no better than the Toump's. Toump is playing in a lesser side for now and not on ball where you would expect to get more of it. Wines is struggling still! Even in a good team with all that class around him. It's not meant to be denigrating of him, just stating facts that his numbers are no better. Class always wins out in the end. At the end of a player's career, we always remember the classy players, not the ones that "have a crack". The ones that change games with moments of brilliance, not by head butting opponents. Port were very lucky to get Wines, but we were luckier IMO. Develop and they/we will prosper.

Is that you Barry P?

"Class always wins out in the end".

That basically says to me you have absolute no idea about football or even what it takes to succeed in sports in general.

So, I have nothing more to add, you are completely ignorant.

LEADERS OF THE PACK by The Oracle

I was asked to write a preview of this week’s Round 8 match between Melbourne and Geelong. The two clubs have a history that goes right back to the time when the game was starting to become an organised sport but it’s the present that makes the task of previewing this contest so interesting. Both clubs recently reached the pinnacle of the competition winning premiership flags in 2021 and 2022 respectively, but before the start of this season, many good judges felt their time had passed - n

Demonland Trackwatcher Kev Martin was on hand at Gosch's Paddock for Monday's training session and made the following observations. About 38 to 40  players down at training.  BBB walking laps.  Charlie Spargo still in rehab, doing short run throughs.  Christian Salem has full kit on and doing individual work with a trainer. He is is starting to get into some sprints. I cannot see Andy Moniz-Wakefield out there. Jack Viney and Kade Chandler have broken away from the

    DISCO INFERNO by Whispering Jack

Two weeks ago, when the curtain came down on Melbourne’s game against the Brisbane Lions, the team trudged off the MCG looking tired and despondent at the end of a tough run of games played in quick succession. In the days that followed, the fans wanted answers about their team’s lamentable performance that night and foremost among their concerns was whether the loss was a one off result of fatigue or was it due to other factor(s) of far greater consequence.  As it turns out, the answer to

TIGERS PUNT CASEY by KC from Casey

The afternoon atmosphere at the Swinburne Centre was somewhat surreal as the game between Richmond VFL and the Casey Demons unfolded on what was really a normal work day for most Melburnians. The Yarra Park precinct marched to the rhythm of city life, the trains rolled by, pedestrians walked by with their dogs and the traffic on Punt Road and Brunton Avenue swirled past while inside the arena, a football battle ensued. And what a battle it was? The Tigers came in with a record of two wins f
