Thoughts?

We cannot afford to to let this talent slip.

Is generally an immaculate shot for goal.

Is getting better by the week since his round 3 omission

Had a solid night v Saints

Was a dangerous target at times.

Showed some hunger for the contest, a few pressure at acts

Has earned 3 brownlow votes v essendon as loose defender.

Jack Watts is Melbourne.

Jack watts is class.

Jack Watts will be the central figure in our revival next year and beyond

There are not many clubs that have a spare $600k in their salary cap so I doubt he will get that sort of an offer elsewhere, however I think we should offer him a three year contract around the $400 - $450k mark; he will be good under the right coach and with a bit of senior player guidance.

I was thinking that he is worth maybe $70,000 per year.

I never seen him consistently going anything worth much more then that for the MFC.

Yes to three year contract. I'd go with $400-450,000 though.

That Figure is a bit high....Put some incentives in there...Make him earn it

Jack needs to challenge himself..as a kid he never had to do that playing sport.

Give him a big first year with incentive based second and third years so it becomes a front ended contract if he's playing poorly or just a decent and fair contract if he's playing well.

Take out the number 1 draft pick and what do we have.

Pro's:
Speed, skill, bit of bonus height, moves well in traffic

Con's

Not hard enough at the contest yet or tackling

Not a great overhead mark very much a leading into space player

Defensive game needs work

Has struggled to hold down a position in the team long term

Now the number 1 pick represents talent and also has an off field significance if he was to go. So I'm not one to say you can completely disregard that so it is worth something but we have to be objective. In terms of what we gave up he owes us more than we owe him but at the same time he didn't ask to go number 1 pick specifically or he certainly didn't demand it. The other thing to consider is we have Clarke, Dawes, Howe and Hogan whilst our midfield is weak. We also have to pay Frawley, Garland and McDonald (and Pedersen - shudders). We can't overspend on talls or third tall types. I'd hate for us to get to a position where we have a big name FA who will represent value to us and not having the cash ie. Essendon with Goddard who didn't come cheap but was certainly worth the coin for the dons at that time.

give him whatever he wants. In order to be a premiership side you need all-australian type talent, at the MFC at present we have about 5 players capable of that and he is one of them

he showed in one game today what he is capable of as an inside 50 target

ive always backed the judgement of our coaches, but based on today they seem like a pack of cretins for ever taking watts out of the Inside 50 arc

he's just spent 62 games on the half back flank and now he's where he was always supposed to be, at the position he was drafted at... staggering

I know its biased, wishful thinking.. but Clark, Dawes, Hogan, Watts and Howe isn't that the friggin dreamteam of forward setups or what?

Jack Watts will be better than Naitaniu when we get Roos or Choco

3 year deal for sure. But as others have said. somewhere in the area of 400-450K instead.

We are in no position to lose talent like Watts. That said, we we need a coach to get him to the next level and beyond

Jack Watts will be better than Naitaniu when we get Roos or Choco

And I though you were going to be our new coach LOL

Madness.

I'd rather offer Hogan 600k over three than Watts.

. If you think we will keep Hogan by offering him $600k over three years then you are the mad one!

So we are going to have Hogan, Dawes, Watts and Clark all in our forward line if fit? Way to build a balanced list.

We need midfielders, small forwards and decent half-bank flankers with laser like kicks.

How does it tie in with the rest of the salaries, future salaries and so on?

You can't really work out what is reasonable to pay one player when you don't know what the rest of the players are getting.

I use the other club theory. Example 1- equalisation : Geelongs star players agreed to $500k to keep the list together. I'm guessing that may have been relaxed in order to keep Taylor, plus Scarlett, Harley , Ling , Ablett are no longer there.

Example 2 - marque player: Hawks reportedly have offered Buddy a mill per year , plus must be paying good money for Cyril, Roughy, Hodge, Mitchell. Next bracket Sewell , Lewis ect. Then recruits like Hale and Lake sign for less to play finals.

These figures are speculation, we have Mitch on 700k, Dawes on 500k, Davey coming off a 500k contract. Even if we only pay 92.5% of the cap who are we paying the money to? I thought the 3 Jacks had their contracts front loaded so to avoid problems with out supposed superstar list?? Has Watts already taken home big coin and the next contract is to be more modest?.

We need to develop Watts to play on ball. His versatility to play in a number of positions and generate play is crucial for us moving forward. If he keeps building his intensity and agro he will be a fantastic player.

Omg he was drafted as a forward how about we stop with the crap of trying to develop him in every position and leav him as a forward!

  • PREVIEW: Hawthorn

Hawthorn and Melbourne. Two teams with impressive form from last week but with seasons that are travelling on different trajectories meet in Saturday’s twilight game for what could well be the most intriguing contest of the AFL’s penultimate round. Sadly, the game has been relegated to that unappealing time slot in the weekend when Melburnians are typically preoccupied with activities other than football. It falls between the morning's shopping, afternoon sport and recreation, and Saturday night fever. A time usually reserved for relatively insignificant events but this one is not a nothingburger for either of the clubs or their fans.

  • REPORT: Western Bulldogs

The next coach of the Melbourne Football Club faces the challenge of teaching his players how to win games against all comers. At times during this tumultuous season, that task has seemed daunting, made more so in light of the surprise news last week of the sacking of premiership coach Simon Goodwin. However, there were also some positive signs from yesterday’s match against the Western Bulldogs that the challenge may not be as difficult as one might think. The two sides presented a genuine football spectacle, featuring pulsating competitive play with eight lead changes throughout the afternoon, in a display befitting a finals match. The result could have gone either way and in the end, it came down to which team could produce the most desperate of acts to provide a winning result. It was the Bulldogs who had their season on the line that won out by a six point margin that fitted the game and the effort of both sides.

  • CASEY: Brisbane

The rain had been falling heavily in south east Queensland when the match began at Springfield, west of Brisbane. The teams exchanged early goals and then the Casey Demons proceeded like a house on fire in the penultimate game of the VFL season against a strong opponent in the Brisbane Lions. Sparked by strong play around the ground by seasoned players in Charlie Spargo and Jack Billings, a strong effort from Bailey Laurie and promising work from youngsters in Kynan Brown and  Koltyn Tholstrup, the Demons with multiple goal kickers firing, raced to a 27 point lead late in the opening stanza. A highlight was a wonderful goal from Laurie who brilliantly sidestepped two opponents and kicked beautifully from 45 metres out.
