So we should go for hard nuts in the first round like we did with Sylvia and McLean at picks 3 and 5? How well did that work out?

And one game does not a champion make. Luke Tapscott was just about BOG in his first game playing off HBF while Jobe Watson and Gary Ablett Jr took years to develop, with the former nearly delisted by Essendon.

Can we just agree on one thing? Every player is different.

olisik's been around a few years now and I *still* can't decide whether he's a troll or just stupid. If he's a troll, he's an excellent one.

Guys can we refrain from the childish bully comments and keep this discussion about Dunstan?

Some of the comments in this thread are extremely offensive

If we took Dunstan at pick 9 the entire footy world would have thought Pendo was back,

i'm happy to say i think Salem will be a better player very quickly, but that's just my opinion

One main reason which I am not big on spending 4+ years on development is because players can get up and leave after 8. We may as well get 8 solid years out of players rather then 4 development uears and 4 exceptional years only to have the player poached.

Are you that clown Chris from Camberwell who rings up SEN with outlandish claims of doom???

If your not find him and sit together at the footy you will be perfect company for each other

Pennant, thank you for making me laugh out loud at my desk at my, no so pleasant at the moment, workplace....brilliant

Most players will recodnise the investment you're putting into them and want to repay the faith i think,

also Dunstan is from SA Salem is from Vic

Loved Luke Dunstan right from the start. I do wish we had picked him up but I am just as happy with Salem.

People may have laughed but look who just got rising star nomination in thyre first game.

Watts is a good example, took him until his 6th season for it to click. 5 years of development and he is free to walk at end of his current contract.

Trengove is in his 5th year.

And this attitude will keep us a cellar dweller for years to come. We will lose players - all clubs do. But you have got to back this new regime in to bring stability and success and a culture of players wanting to stick around to taste success.( please lord, be in my lifetime). You draft players who you consider the best pick for the club over an extended period. Just because one pick is ready to go right now as opposed to another requiring a year or two to develop should not cloud your thinking. And the thought of losing a player after 8 years !!

For once you've posted something worth thinking about. But I think the evidence doesn't back up the argument. Since free agency came in how many players who were able to leave actually did so? If there was mass movement of players under free agency, I think your point has some validity. Perhaps that will happen in the future, but right now with most players choosing to remain with their club, I think your concern is unfounded.

If Trengove comes good now I guarantee at the 8 year mark Martin would have been better value over the whole 8 year period.

Pretty much any MFC player who could have moved has so far except Dunn

Trengove is in his 5th year.

And Rhys Palmer won the rising star in his first year. The only point you are making is some players take longer to develop than others - some skyrocket early and fizzle out or never develop further and yes, some players that are project players that will require time to develop never develop at all.

To base a recruiting strategy on not picking players that require some time is flawed in the extreme - in general you would then never pick a ruckman or big KP as they take more time to mature ( there are exceptions)

Why is everyone comparing a kid who has played ONE game of football to a kid who hasn't had a run yet and screaming that we made the wrong choice? How the hell would anyone know anything yet?

Surely this is a conversation that can wait till both kids have 70-80 games under their belt

there is no guarantee Martin would have been any good if he was developed by our previous football department, and on the same not Trengove could have been killing it at the tigers

I am not sure of your point ?

Both Trengove and Martin were ready to go in their first year.

If you are suggesting we should have picked Martin over Trengove then I am happy to be pointed to the post where you suggested that , where ANYONE suggested that before that draft. Trengove and Scully were the two best selections at draft time in the land - daylight - then Martin.

That it hasn't played out that way is unfortunate - I would go as far as saying as Scully has been the worst of the three.

Scully has been one of the more disappointing number 1 picks i have seen

Moloney - was restricted - we didn't match the offer and couldn't get him out the door quick enough

Rivers - from all reports, the club didnt try too hard to keep him either

The only one the club tried to keep was Sylvia.

I thought Watts was until last weekend. Now I think Kreuzer is.

I was thinking a bit more broadly than the data from just one club...

Moloney - was restricted - we didn't match the offer and couldn't get him out the door quick enough

Rivers - from all reports, the club didnt try too hard to keep him either

The only one the club tried to keep was Sylvia.

...and Nutbeam has adequately addressed MFC, anyway.

its the demonland way.

harp on this topic after dunstan does anything noteworthy and harp again when salem is in the magoos.

and then you harp some more until there is more than 100 pages and 15 threads on the topic.

mix in a bit of jack watts, stir it with pederson/dunn and you have demonland.

and hopefully you get a sacked coach in there somewhere and youve got everything needed to hit the keyboard .

There were a number of Demonland Trackwatchers at Gosch's Paddock this morning to bring you their observations from Preseason Training. KEV MARTIN'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS They were going hard at each other. The sims were in two 15 minute blocks. The second block finished a few minutes early, they gathered and had another 7 minutes at it. I think they were asked to compete, as they would play against an opposition. There was plenty of niggle, between some of them. At the end o

Better late than never … and quite frankly, there’s very little to report other than that training took place at Casey Fields this morning, that Tracc was there nursing his rib injury and that some photographs are on the club’s social media including this one of Clarrie in Raging Bull stance that gives rise for confidence. The other news is that the club has a new train on player in 185cm Dandenong Stingrays midfielder Noah Hibbins-Hargreaves (love the hyphenated name which is just so fitti

Welcome back to Demonland for those like me who have been on vacation. I’m posting this with some trepidation because of a certain amount of uncertainty surrounding the return of preseason training in 2025 after a flurry of weddings including those of our coach, one of our superstar players and a former premiership champion player and bloke, not to mention the recent mysterious incident that occurred on the Mornington Peninsula.  I believe that the team reassembles this morning at Casey Fie

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the sweltering heat to bring you their Preseason Training observations from Gosch's Paddock on Monday morning. SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to

A few new faces joined our veteran Demonland Trackwatchers on a beautiful morning out at Gosch's Paddock for another Preseason Training Session. BLWNBA'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I arrived at around 1015 and the squad was already out on the track. The rehab group consisted of XL, McAdam, Melksham, Spargo and Sestan.
