GM Football Operations - Steven Icke?

Recommended Posts

Clearly we're looking to appoint a GM of Football Operations. What about Steven Icke? Former Bluey Truscott winner, GM of Ops at Freo and Carlton. Now GM of High Performance for Basketball Australia. Eventually fell out with Ratten at Carlton and left the club, but was highly regarded as a very good operator in league circles over many years. Could be a very worthy candidate?

Yeah Donald McDonald could be an option. He'd be used to running things on a shoestring budget and I like they way North have made smart recruiting and list development decisions under Scott. Also don't seem to have a problem maintaining players or any other dramas. I'd say Brad Scott is one of the better supported young coaches as well for a guy who hasn't done anything - compared to Brendan McCartney, Scott Watters, Neeld, Bluey McKenna ect who have all been doubted.

Nothing wrong with Icke either although you'd like to clarify whatever troubles he and Ratten had to make sure he's not an overstepper. Surely he wouldn't have a lot of confidence he could have a long career in Basketball Australia, they have a track record as good as ours you'd think.

Don't mind the left field option of Peter Schwab, by all accounts his downfall at the Hawks was caused by him having to much trust in his players, which was abused in the end. Could be good with the players and the media allowing the coach to be firm if the playing group start taking liberties.

The reverend would also be another option as would Balmy but don't think heaven and earth would move him!

Whoever it is from the sounds of things we have identified him and just need to sort out some internal positions such as current Footy Manager, funny that has been missed by all media out lets, if we are appointing someone for the role GM Footy Operations, to me the current Footy Manager is gone.

It was always going to be move one when Jackson came out and said we needed some more experienced heads in the FD and around the club.

So why Icke? Yes he is ex Melbourne? But gm of footy operations is extremely important. Were freo and Carlton that great under his tenure?

Same question for Jnr McDonald. Model citizen but can he coach ? I have no idea.

I'm not pushing for Icke, it would be Peter Schwab for me but I'm pretty sure Jackson will have his own short list. My suggestion of Peter Schwab is more about the type of person we need in this role, someone who understands football, experienced administrator, has good connections at the AFL, experience with the media, from a successful club and highly regarded.

Schwab for me as well. Watched him on Open Mike and thought straight away that if we are going to appoint somebody in a "Neil Balme" type position Schwab would be perfect with his experience as a player, coach and AFL employee.

Schwabby was my old footy coach at school, great person.

The fact that you listed Bluey winner tells me plenty. This is a typical case of trying to find the best Melbourne candidate instead of the best candidate.

Yes that open mike was very interesting. seems like a very honest character, but even that was tested when Mike brought up the Barry Hall decision which enabled him to play in the grand final. no way was that in play and low impact.

I'm sure a large contingent here will not approve of Peter Schwab being a part of our club due to the fact he's Cam's cousin.

Nothing to do with anything, I didn't want CS at the club but would love to have Peter. Very different characters and different experiences.

That would be a stupid reason.

And if it didn't work out for some reason Caro could just rehash her old bitter stories "it is all due to Schwab"!!

Obviously very true - I was referring to those fickle CS haters that wouldn't want anyone with the surname 'Schwab' to be at the club again.

His qualifications come first. He has very good credentials and was well regarded throughout a long tenure. The fact that he was hand picked by Dick Pratt to come to Carlton with Greg Swann says something. That he played for the MFC is a pleasant coincidence - it may mean that he has some genuine care and affection for the place. That to me isn't a bad thing.

Caro on Sports Today intimating the latest whispers that the Reverand could be the man, but they were just that.

I like this idea a lot, he gets a very good wrap regarding his current role, is well respected by the AFL, is at a successful club, and is definitively a favourite son in many ways. If he is the right person for the job and not just because he has a Melbourne connection, it could assist in bridging the gap between old and new administrations and help bring supporters back on side who are disenchanted with the current football department but loved the good old days. These are only bonuses, if indeed he is the right man for the job.

    GALLANT by KC from Casey

The world “gallant” is not one that is readily acceptable to losing teams in our game of football so when it was used in the context of the Casey Demons’ loss to Sandringham in yesterday’s match at Casey Fields, it left a bitter taste in the mouth.  The Demons went into the game against the St Kilda affiliated Zebras with the advantage of playing on their home turf (not that this has been a major asset in 2024) and with very little else going in their favour. The Saints have close to a full

    MEANWHILE by Whispering Jack

… meanwhile, at about the same time that Narrm was putting its feet on the accelerator to obliterate the long-suffering Euro-Yroke combination, I heard someone mention in passing that Kuwarna was leading Waalitj Marawar by a whopping 46 to 1 halfway through the second quarter of their game over in Adelaide. “What is football coming to?” I asked myself.  In front of my eyes, the Demons were smashing it through the midfield, forcing turnovers and getting the footy to their forwards who w

HEAVEN OR HELL by The Oracle

Clashes between Melbourne and St Kilda are often described as battles between the forces of heaven and hell. However, based on recent performances, it’s hard to get excited about the forthcoming match between these two sides. It would be fair to say that, at the moment, both of these teams are in the doldrums. The Demons have become the competition’s slow starters while the Saints are not only slow to begin, they’re not doing much of a job finishing off their games either. About the only th
