kelly is more like a cotchin in his ability to move smoothly through traffic; he's very smooth. bastinac is more a battering ram.

kelly, dunstan, sheed, and aish are the top-line mids in this draft from all reports, with scharenberg the wildcard who may appeal to some clubs more than others because of his versatility - i don't like him for us, for instance, as he's more finish than he is engine-room.

alex mcdonald will also go top 10, as should billings and kade koladjshnij, you would think.

plus there's boyd, who some club will trade to secure with gws.

i know the story is that it's a thin draft this year, but the top line talent looks seriously strong.

Why isn't Sheed listed for WA. Is he injured?

Aish looks good and is classy but I really like Dunstan. Strong, loves the contest, reads the ball at the stoppages so well. At the last 2 stoppages of the 3rd (centre bounce and throw in) he read the ball better than his opponent and got the releasing handpass to win the clearance.

Side note: 3Q scores SA 10.6.66 to WA 8.4.52

Final score SA 11.9.75 to WA 10.5.65.

Would like to know what others at the game thought but I thought that Aish was only running one way in the last quarter. Wasnt impressed with most of his efforts in the last at all. Dunstan was solid in the last after copping a whack in the guts. Really liked Todd McKay and Campbell Combe in the guts, Scharenberg is top 10 not top 3 IMO. For WA I liked Marsh, Lim and Johnson while Cripps (think it was him, no 17) did well from what I saw.

I was more watching the SA players as Dom Sheed was out.

Now to country v metro

It's hard to judge on one game dd, but aish is coming back from a shoulder injury and has missed a bit of footy. He is a class player. He might be this years version of rich/selwood/heppell who is rated very highly early on, but slips because of injury leading into the draft. I think he is on talent/skill he potentially is the most talented in this draft. Did you happen to see much of Reynolds for sa? I missed the early game.

Jack billings really turning it on for metro!

Nothing I saw today convinced me not to take Sheed,30 disposals and 4 goals last week.He has a ready made body and an elite kick on both sides and runs all day.

Today,Dunstan,Aish and Kelly didn't do much but I like the look of Battersby,he looks ready to go and has elite disposal with 84% eff. for the champs.

So it's Sheed for me but this time last year I said we have to get this Ollie Wines kid,so what do I know?

Really like Dunstan. Whilst Aish had the class he was a bit and out of the game which is to be expected when he's just starting his season really and getting tagged.

I really liked Sean Lemmens as a half back flanker for SA. Thought his ball use was clean. But without watching much you really only see the players you become familiar with. It's hard to tell who's done what defending and running off the ball etc.

I'd take Billings any day.

Reads the play well and kicks beautifully.

Outside midfielder that can play forward and deadly kick.

Didn't notice reynolds sorry.

Watching vm for Kelly and Billings, must say that if we are looking to pick a classy outside player I would be taking billings over kelly and aish.

As I type away Billings is kicking goal 3... really tearing it up.

Kelly is everywhere but not really impacting.

Im watching vc for Zak Jones and Matt Crouch. Jones had a really nice bit of play over on my wing where he won the contested ball, broke 2 tackles and kicked into the corridor lace out which lead to a scoring shot. But thats about all he has done so far.

Jack7 I would say at the moment I would be leaning towards either Sheed or Dunstan for pick 2. Although Billings is trying hard to change my mind.

I would also be looking at Combe or McKay from SA later in the draft maybe in the 40's, Combe would be a steal that low.

Shows that you make decisions based on how they play in one game and don't take other things into account- growth, development etc.

Cheers db, but if you missed last week Kelly was the absolute dominant player by far for metro. He probably kept them in arms reach of SA as billings, McDonald were all quiet.

Expect Matt crouch to really firm into top 8 calculations. He is one of those team orientated players who really hits the ball hard. Good skills too.

GD I saw only the afl page highlights last week and from all accounts kelly was bog but billings, iirc, was also named in the best for vm.

I like him but I when I think that we will have no2/3, im asking myself is he worth that and at the moment I would say no at pick 2 or 3 but yes at pick 6. Just my view on it.

Crouch is one I really liked last year and if Hogan wasnt on the table I feel we might have had a crack in the MD with him or kelly.

Time for Q3.

Had to leave at 3QT but vm were taking control.

Taking out of today plus what ive seen at tac games and on the computer, I think that if we have pick 2 or 3 (or both with a priority) there are 5 players been talked about as possible at those selections but personally there are only 3 in my book: Dunstan, Sheed and Billings in that order now but that may change with the tac cup, wafl and sanfl colts/seniors all still with plenty left in the season and finals.

One of my mates who is involved with the U18's reckons that Lloyd Perris from NSW/ACT is an absolute gun as well, so if anyone is going tomorrow keep an eye out for him.

You'd take Kelly every day of the week over Billings.

Nah, it's a close call.

Billings came in underdone, he couldn't really run through the midfield.

It's a tough call between Kelly, Billings, Sheed, Aish and Scharenberg as far as the mids go.

Dunstan doesn't have the class or smarts of any of those players - barring perhaps Scharenberg, that is debatable.

Posters are locked in on Dunstan just because he has a mature body, but in reality, Kelly and Sheed offer more as mids.

This would be a good page to archive for trotting out this time next year and then could see who was right and what number picks the players who are playing well and standing out in 2014.

There is always some no 7 to 10 pick who plays like a top 2

Dees were contemplating taking Kelly in mini draft last yr.

I would expect them to grab him this year if available.

We need true midfielders, not flankers.

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
