Young midfielders/small forwards not getting game time

I have been wanting to bring this player to discussion for a while, is 27/28 next year.

Hardened player, and with all the youth of GC would have to be approaching the outer. (i know injuries have hampered him this year and last)

I know its another Neeld type quick fix, but if we can get him on the cheap + couple early round mids, it would be great for our club

I believe he is also in the last of 3 year contract

Thoughts?

Would be a good get, this guy can play. Injuries have been a problem though. He is a bit better than a quick fix.

Would be happy with banfield, has all the attributes but no consistency it appears. He and Clark tore us a new one 2 or 3 years ago.

At one point North really rated Anthony didn't they? what happened there?

He turns it over by foot to much, that why he is playing Vfl

Very happy for Stark and Clisby to stay on the rookie list, maybe even Clisby get promoted if he can get over his injuries and be a possible inclusion as a rookie upgrade. Barry, Kent, Taggert all promising kids. Tynan isn't up to it I've seen enough of him. Blease I'd listen to any offers for because whilst he's talented it's a struggle for him to show it.

I don't want to turn this into a delisting thread but at this stage:

Tynan, Spencer, Davey, Macdonald, at least 1 of Pedo/Sellar, Nicholson, Rodan, Gillies, Davis, Bail, Couch ®.

That's 10 delistings. Upgrade Magner. Add Hogan.. Keep Stark and Clisby on the rookie list.

Now these days you get a choice between 38-40 senior list and 4-6 rookies. So I'd be looking for 6-7 more additions to the senior list and 3-4 for the rookie list. We can't fill that many spots purely out of the draft the talent most likely wont be there so we should look for a couple more mature players added in. I don't want to fill the list with list cloggers but we need to add some more mature agers/recycled talent in some ways. I see Liam Anthony as a massive upgrade on Dan Nicholson.

If you look at Sam Dwyer from Coll via Port Melb and look at Chris Cain who everyone says is the next Sam Dwyer you could add him and replace Roh Bail. I'm sure there is a mature or out of a game defender with more promise than Sellar, Davis and Gillies.

No chance Bail will be delisted, is one of our better contested possession players.

Rodan, Macdonald, Gillies, Couch Nicholson can go, Pedo signed a 3 yr deal so he's not going anywhere.

Tynan & Spencer will be kept and Sellar most likely get a 1 yr deal as well as Davey.

haha that's what I was going to say!

How can people think that one of the worst teams of a generation can be improved with 4 delistings come end of the year. This team needs a huge turnover. You just need to look at Terlich, Jones and Viney being 3 of our best players that the talent we have aren't much good!

Controversy...

Swap 2 to GWS for Dylan Shiel

Swap 20 to Suns for Dion Prestia

Swap 38 to Hawks for Shane Savage or Mitch Hallahan

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

X – Sellar, J Macd, Davis, Gillies, Davey, Bail, Spencer, Rodan, Watts to Freo for pick 12 (-9)

ADD:

- Hogan to main list

- Free agent

- Draft: 12, 54, 73 (Magner)

- Psd 2

Viv Michie very highly rated at Freo and has been playing top quality football at WAFL level, is coming back from bad injury and they have nursed him back slowly( in a similar way to Taggert by us) so highly do they rate him

I know they do and so do I. But what this thread is about is picking up young good players who may wish to leave. The 2 most popular reasons afl players in that category leave are lack of opportunity and to go home. Throw in cash and we become somewhat desirable. Plus a nice draft pick to Freo.

He might be highly rated but everyone has a price.

I look at Maric, Houli and Grigg that ended up at Richmond because they were unhappy with lack of opportunity and have flourished.

I like your thinking, possibly could get Savage or Hallahan for a bit lower, but if we have to over pay slightly, then lets do it.

Also we would need to recruit a ruckman and dome defenders in the draft as i count 4, 5 if you include watts gone. which leaves us pretty shallow.

Anyone think we are a chance to have a look at M.Brown at West coast?

i hope not. He seems to struggle without a winning midfield.

I'd keep the faith that we can fix McDonalds disposal and keep either Pedo or Sellar for depth and reload through one of our draft picks.

Yes for what I have seen of Mitch brown he doesn't seem like a top line player and hence gets replaced by Schofield, McKenzie and Glass as west coasts best defenders. We won't have millions of draft picks up our sleeve so I'd rather keep the defenders we have and focus on the midfield

Fair enough, but youve just delisted 5 defenders.... that leaves us with 1 in the VFL

Leaves us with Frawley, McDonald, Pedersen, Dunn, Watts, Garland and draft a young tall defender (that's 7 guys for 4 spots) plus if there is a horror run with injuries you could use Howe, Hogan or even Fitzpatrick in defense for a short period as a teaching exercise.

Not sure why you'd keep Davis, Joel Mac, Gillies or Sellar (if you can't get rid of Pedo and have to keep Sellar) based purely on depth in a team that's along way from depth really being a major concern. I'd much rather use the 3 extra list spots to develop midfielders.

You said Watts should be traded. Howe playing defense is very bad decision IMO. I agree with the sentiment, but i reckon we focus on the midfield first and fore most.

I've thought many a time about Watts getting traded but haven't actually mentioned it in this thread if I recall correctly. Why would you have a problem playing Howe in defense? I'm talking about as a stop gap if there were enough injuries to Frawley, McDonald, Pedo, Garland, Watts, Dunn + a draft pick, so I'm saying 3 or so injuries at least just to that group of players. I'm not talking as a long term move. He is also Neeld's favouirite loose man in the backline as he gets to contests and can impact them on the ground or in the air. With Hogan, Dawes, Clark he is destined to play high forward/wing in my mind anyway.

The idea is about focusing on the midfield. In order to do that we need to turn over excessive players on our list. Gillies, Joel Mac and Davis haven't provided us with anything this year and have limited potential IMO so therefore turn them over and replace them with midfielders. Maybe get a 190cm midfielder/defender who can start in the backline group and move into the midfield. Bit like Jackson Thurlow at Geelong.

Bird, Banfield, Colyer and Guthrie. All decent youngish players with something to offer us.

Bird would walk into our midfield and hopefully bring knowledge, culture and work ethic with him. Good in traffic, decent size, decent skills. At 24 he is coming into his prime and has many years of footy ahead.

Banfield would take the small forward role from Byrnes and Davey. He suffered injuries and has not been confident upon return through the QAFL. Been unable to push Zorko out this year so would could pinch him.

Colyer would give us a pacey midfielder/half forward. He's good around stoppages and can tear forward and kick goals.

Guthrie would walk in as our best small defender. We haven't had a decent one since Whelan and Bartram. At present Garland plays on small even though he is bigger. This guy would suit us perfectly.

If we landed this 4 our list instantly improves in lacking areas. Midfield, small forward, small defender. Key forwards and backs are set, we need to work on the midfield and smalls at both ends. Throw in Dale Thomas as a free agent into our midfield and I think we'd push finals next year!

My mistake, someone else said for Watts to be traded, I apologise. Howe has an X factor down forward that creates mismatches for opposition defenders and because of that I would much rather see him down forward. Howe can go back I agree, but I personally would rather him as that HFF type.

Yes, agreed. I will take a look at any of the types of defender come midfield types in this years draft.

Guthrie is settled at Geelong, getting a regular game and seems now in their best 22. There's not much reason for him to leave.

Bird wont move, Banfield is speed with nothing else, Guthrie wont be an option. Colyer a possible as is Savage who amazes me never gets a game at Hawthorn except as sub. We should focus on building a midfield with elite youth, gamble on some promising mature age i.e.: Matt Jones and attempt to land a mature A grader to help Nate Jones. Dal Santo is where I would be looking. Easier said than done though.

Where's the leverage on Dal Santo besides cash? I mean the saints won't cut him and at the saints he gets to play with Montagna, Steven, Armitage, Ross and with us it would be mainly Jones. He's less chance of getting tagged at the saints I'd say.

Banfield I think is worth a rookie nothing more. Just to have something different on our list and a bit of speed at training wouldn't hurt.

If there's another Matt Jones I'd take him otherwise a third round pick for Colyer/Savage or some of the others mentioned probably isn't a bad investment.

    THE BLOW by Whispering Jack

Narrm’s finals prospects took a crushing blow after the team’s insipid performance at Optus Stadium against a confident Waaljit Marawar in the first of its Doug Nicholls Round outings for 2024.  I use the description “crushing blow” advisedly because, although the season is not yet at it’s halfway mark, the Demons have now failed abysmally in two of their games against teams currently occupying bottom eight places on the ladder.  The manner in which these losing games were played out w

HALF FULL by KC from Casey

It was a case of the Casey Demons going into a game with a glass half full in their match up against the Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields on Saturday. As the list of injured and unavailable AFL and VFL listed players continues to grow and with Melbourne taking all three emergencies to Perth for the weekend on a “just in case” basis, its little brother was always destined to struggle. Casey was left with only eight AFL listed players from who to select their team but only two - an out-of-form

They are definitely better than they were then.   Young Harley has already proven his worth with some stellar performances for a first year kid playing among men. He’s taken hangers, k

OVER YET? by KC from Casey

The Friday evening rush hour clash of two of the VFL’s 2024 minnows, Carlton and the Casey Demons was excruciatingly painful to watch, even if it was for the most part a close encounter. I suppose that since the game had to produce a result (a tie would have done the game some justice), the four points that went to Casey with the win, were fully justified because they went to the best team. In that respect, my opinion is based on the fact that the Blues were a lopsided combination that had
