what a joke!

No doubt there are not too many bikkies in the bin after the Non-Tanking Fine and Old Flash's (VFL) salary are taken care of.

Look to an upgrade ("elevation") when it becomes free at mid-season.

Are you implying our club is restricting Magner's ability to ply his trade through a lack of funds? Surely that would be something Magner would want to take up with the players association?

For those wanting Magner promoted, you're out of luck (me included) - just tweeted:

"Neeld: we're not going to elevate a rookie for this week. It will be a weekly thing that we'll review."

Absolutely disgraceful. What sort of message does this send Magnar? He has done everything right to be selected, the opportunity to promote finally arrives, we lose our two captain mid-fielders and then this? Casey have a bye............ FFS.

Are we tanking?

What is the logical explanation? This is so bizarre I feel that the club needs to make a better explanation than "we will review it each week".

More crazy decisions by Neeld.

There can be no other reason. It simply does not make any sense to not elevate Magner.

If there was no restriction upon his selection he would have been in the team well before this.

Balmy stuff.

Mate if you are right, and finances are so short we can't pay someone to be promoted we are truly in a death role.

Surely there is some other explanation. If the club was not intending to promote someone they would not have put Grimes onto the long term list.

Posted

Well it certainly wouldn't be Clisby or Stark (and probably not Couch).

Probably they don't want to 'waste' Magner against Rich, Freo, Hawks and Pies when (after the break) they can have him for free against St Kilda and The Dogs.

I endorse the announcement Neeld and the coaching panel should not rush into promotion of Magner. We have an option of automatically promoting a rookie half-year and if Magner was judged to be our saviour in 2013 then they would of elevated him after last season. Taking our time, it lets Neeld get a better appreciation of Clisby and the other two in case one of these is more strategically advantageous in the short term.

Agree. The only hiccup in that though is that Casey have a bye this week, so getting a better appreciation of Clisby etc. will have to be put on hold for another week.

As for the rest of the discussion, we'll have at least two outs: Grimes and Trengove. Dawes comes in, which could leave only one place. Surely we'd start to look at trying for some kind of consistency, there were a few new/young players in against Carlton (Viney, Kent, Strauss), it's just not ideal to keep throwing the team around with 4 or 5 changes each week.

They may feel that they want a bit more experience against a young side, so Rodan or Davey would be the obvious choice. I'd also take Jetta over Magner, better defensively and better disposal. Or even Toumpas, from all reports, he has (re)found his mojo somewhat over the last couple of weeks at Casey and he's not just a throw it onto the boot player. Would also be a perfect opportunity for him to learn from the little master. Finally, Blease was also good last week in the VFL, and is probably in contention, we could use a bit of zip around the forward line.

Still, we'll soon see.

You'd expect guys like Toumpas and Viney to be able to hold their own a little bit more against a team like Gold coast with so many young players, it may be that Neeld just wants to back the young blokes in,

for me Magner has demanded consideration at the very least and i don't see why Grimes would go on the long term injury list if not to promote a rookie.

I know we seem to say it every week, but that has to be one of the worst MFC teams I've ever seen...

I wonder what Jack Fitzpatrick has to do get picked even for the extended interchange?

Posted

Jetta's suspension is up, right? Disappointing he isn't playing, I think he brings a lot of effort and hardness to the team.

That is one sh*t line up.

Where is poor Fitzpatrick? Kid works his butt off and still no game?

Fitzy on fire in the VFL and cant even get named on our bench yet James Sellar is.

Toumpas? Would have thought it was a good chance to run with players around his own age this week.

Jetta? Fitzy? Magner elevation? WTF is going on at our club?!!

Not possible to just stop and think before posting? Jesus C indeed:

"we're well aware that Gold Coast will play three tall forwards, so that's why Davis and James Sellar are in the squad."

I think Fitzpatrick wasn't considered due his age/injuries. Dawes is an experienced player coming of an injured start the season but because he has that experience they're happy to throw him in.

Where as Fitzpatrick who has played 1 more game than Dawes in the VFL they're wanting to get a few more games into before giving him a game, although with no Casey game this week that doesn't help him at all.

If it was me I would have played hime, I know they want this Dawes/Clark combo who are yet to play together but Dawes/Fitzpatrick have done alright as combo in the VFL.

tell me more about the four superstars you have named. This Toumpas bloke is 18 and has done naught at Casey right?

Why do the ins have to be superstars? Jetta was looking good before suspenion, no Casey game this week, why shouldn't he be picked? Fitzy has showed a million times better form at Casey than Sellar. Toumpas has been ok for Casey, should have gone head to head against guys a similar age to him and gained some confidence. Grimes and Trengove out so we bring in Rodan?!

I know you have a Neeld boner, but these are staggering decisions.

THE ACCIDENTAL DEMONS by The Oracle

In the space of eight days, the Melbourne Football Club’s plans for the coming year were turned upside down by two season-ending injuries to players who were contending strongly for places in its opening round match against the GWS Giants. Shane McAdam was first player to go down with injury when he ruptured an Achilles tendon at Friday afternoon training, a week before the cut-off date for the AFL’s pre-season supplemental selection period (“SSP”). McAdam was beginning to get some real mom

RETURN TO NORMAL by Whispering Jack

One of my prized possessions is a framed, autographed guernsey bearing the number 31 worn by my childhood hero, Melbourne’s champion six time premiership player Ronald Dale Barassi who passed away on 16 September 2023, aged 87. The former captain who went on to a successful coaching career, mainly with other clubs, came back to the fold in his later years as a staunch Demon supporter who often sat across the way from me in the Northern Stand of the MCG cheering on the team. Barassi died the
