Why do we always play potential midfielders in other positions. We desperatly need midfielders - I know Taggert was drafted as a mid why not just develop them as mids.

Kent and Toumpas were also played upforward - it's fine if they are resting but we need to develop some good midfielders now!

I hope Kent plays some time in the mid tomorrow.

Yep I agree. Guys with more time/maturity like Blease and Strauss it makes sense to play in the midfield at Casey. Same with Toumpas because he's pretty ready. But Kent and Taggert have a while to go so even at VFL need time. I certainly agree with the theory at AFL level that you bring youngsters in through the flanks because they just don't have the fitness base or strong bodies for long period in the middle.

Toumpas also played as a loose man for a while in front of the defence. His kicking was very accurate. I think he is still getting used the physicality of the local game. He went for a bump (in the third I think) where it looked like he had a choice to either go or evade. He put in a tentative but solid bump (I think the Port player had similar thoughts by his actions as well). It probably shows he may not yet have full confidence in what his body can endure.

I thought all the younger guys had decent games. Tynan got up very high to spoil a few times, Davis I thought had a good game. The times I noticed him coming out of defence, he always found a casey player by foot. Toumpas will get better once he has acclimatised and become a little more battle hardened. Blease continually seems to run too far. He gets around his man but then is either on he wrong foot or has run into a cul de sac. I didn't notice Taggert too much, he could have been on the far side of the ground to me most of the time. He did have a good game against Essendon though and I hope he gets a game with Melbourne at some stage this year.

Too bad we don't have a David Rodan that's 4 or 5 years younger. He kicked a great goal after bursting through a pack but also got caught a few times. He tried hard though I thought.

Sellar did ok down back, mixed a few good things with some indifferent patches, and Dawes did ok. I think his role with Melbourne will eventually be a quality foil for Hogan and Clark rather than the main target he was yesterday. At one time he had a go at Blease for trying to kick an impossible goal by screwing the ball along the ground. His message was to keep it simple.

Overall, It was an enjoyable, entertaining match. Port got a few goals early in the last, and the crowd burst into life and helped them home. Casy were obviously without a number of players but tried throughout.

Someone else mentioned Kyle Mathews. I didn't have a "Record" but I believe he was wearing the helmet. What an inspiration. He is courageous and very skilled. Credit to him for coming back from such an injury and playing good footy at this level.

Oh, and thanks to big Maxie and Chip for having a quick kick to kick with my little boy at quarter time. Thankfully they pulled through without injury.

I had a mate go to that game yesterday, he has played a lot of footy and I respect his opinion enormously.

He looked closely at Toumpas and stated there was a lot to be concerned about. He described him as a "waddler." Not enough pace for outside and nowhere tough enough for inside.

He also stated that Dawes could not possibly come in next week ahead of Fitzpatrick.

He thought Clisby has more to work with than Toumpas.

Port Melbourne rarely loses on its home turf at North Port Oval and it took a barnstorming eight goal final term finish against the Casey Scorpions to protect its record and record a narrow three point victory on Saturday.

The result also avenged the Borough's loss from last year at Casey Fields when, as visitors, they led all day only to succumb by 9 points to the fast finishing Scorpions.

Casey was dominant in general play for the first three quarters although it kicked poorly in the early going which was to prove costly in the final analysis. The team took the lead early in the second term with fast improving Nathan Page's second goal and led by 17 points when they hit the sheds at half time.

The hard running Scorpions have been particularly strong in each of their third quarters this year and this week no exception as they increased the lead to four goals at the final break despite some spirited efforts early in the term by the Borough.

With James Magner, Tom Couch and young Jimmy Toumpas amassing plenty of touches in the midfield and Chris Dawes and Jack Fitzpatrick in strong marking form, the visitors looked set to break Port's home ground dominance at last.

Alas, it was not to be as Port Melbourne unleashed a withering final term and took just six and a half minutes in which they scored four goals to wrest away the lead. Casey them regrouped and looked to have secured the game with the next three goals and by the half way mark of the quarter, was back in front by 17 points after David Rodan scored with a great check side goal.

But the Borough just kept going, propelled by strong legs and mature bodies and led by 9 points at the 30 minute mark. A late goal by Dawes and a long shot from Sam Blease that missed its mark saw Casey's undefeated run come to an end by a narrow margin. For the first time in a couple of seasons it was close but no cigar for the Scorps who had a reputation of late of winning all the heart stoppers.

Casey now has a vital home game coming up against the Box Hill Hawks after the bye for the State game and will be keen to emulate Port Melbourne and make its own ground a fortress from hell for visiting sides.

It probably shows a bit more about the rules. Players are not too sure about whether to bump at all now and where possible they now avoid it for risk of missing weeks.

I wanted to watch Davis to see how his disposal was. To me, it looked ok. Re Toumpas, I would rather he spend a few games at Casey, to develop. It;'s obviously too early to make a career judgement, I think he needs to develop a stronger confidence in himself at VFL level befroe moving up again.

You can really make a fool of yourself at times, why don't you ask your contacts in the FD what has been holding Davis back from getting a senior game.

It is not a myth that his kicking has been his weakness, I think his decision making in the games I have seen suffers more from poor execution. The idea is right but the application has been poor. Now if he is getting that side of his game together that is great because I don't think anyone doubts that he has a red hot go and would love to see him bring that to the AFL team.

You can really make a fool of yourself at times, why don't you ask your contacts in the FD what has been holding Davis back from getting a senior game.

It is not a myth that his kicking has been his weakness, I think his decision making in the games I have seen suffers more from poor execution. The idea is right but the application has been poor. Now if he is getting that side of his game together that is great because I don't think anyone doubts that he has a red hot go and would love to see him bring that to the AFL team.

...but you are not making your point mate and come across as an apologist. Disposal is one of the things he needs to work on and I agree with you that doesn't make him a spud, too many write players off as you say.

It appears he is working on things the FD want him to and that is probably why he is still on the list.

It's not an unruth. I went to nearly every casey home game in 2011 & 2012 and am a big fan of Troy's as he competes hard, spoils well and works hard both ways to provide some rebound from defence, but his disposal has been poor. And that's not just my opinion, one former brownlow medalist by the name of Paul Couch who I was standing next to one game made comment of Davis's questionable disposal on more then one occasion.

Granted I haven't seen Troy play this season, but it does sound like his disposal is improving which is great news, because if he can get that right I reckon he does have the tools to make it. But to claim that Davis having poor/has had poor kicking skills is untrue, well that in itself is untrue as he has for the last 2 years.

I just get a bit peeved with some of the heroes on here who do a bit of kick to kick in the park and think "oh that's easy" how come he misses.

Just glad he's finally getting a few minutes in the sun. Has largely flown under the radar and like the rest of you hope he keeps on going forward. Still have hopes that one day he Tommy Mac, Garland and Frawley represent the best backline in the comp. But then again I'm a bit of a dreamer.

Understand where you're coming from Satyriconhome.

Fingers crossed Davis can keep improving as he seems to be, will be good to keep the heat on guys like Chip, Garland & Tommy Mc, I reckon he could have a career if he cleans that part of his game up and see him as a betetr prospect then Sellar or Pedersen. He will need a good year this year that's for sure as I believe he's out of contract at seasons end.
