Its a [censored] digrace that we could have had him 6 years ago but chose DEAN BAILEY over him

Makes me sick

I completely deferred to the panel of experts who appointed Bailey in 2007. I had thought Sheedy would've been good for the club at the time, but I figured that panel knew more. On the face of it, Bailey initially presented quite well, even though I hadn't even heard of the guy prior to him applying for the position.

I now think/know the panel got this wrong. Massively wrong - that much is clear. Quite simply, we would not be in this position had the MFC appointed a fired up Sheedy at the time.

I've since heard Sheedy speak at various GWS functions. All extremely impressive.

The guy's a legend - he's a people leader. He has vision. He's a marketer. Sponsors love him, and he is uncompromising on such things as culture. It now sickens me that we missed this opportunity at the time.

It seems to me that he now absolutely hates the MFC and wouldn't agree to be involved with the club.

The only way I expect it'd be possible would be if the AFL organised it, not us.

FFS lets win some games to stop these morons trotting out garbage...

Maybe 10 years ago - I have alot of respect for Neeld and everything he stands for - give the man a chance

Neeld doesn't have to go. They can simply make up a position for Sheedy to be involved (Just like Neil Craig)

Whilst I get the sentiment around getting an experienced big name into the club who has "been there, done that" to give the club hope, I think Barret must have been drunk when he wrote this article.

Kevin Sheedy??

If we brought in Kevin Sheedy as senior coach or some other high profile role and we didnt start winning, the very same same muppets would write about how stupid we were for paying big money to a dinosaur...

FMD i hate the footy media. Theres too much of it, and these days the AFL's own website is full of puff pieces.

Choco coached GWS last year and Leon Cameron is coaching them this year. Sheeds hasn't coached since 2007.

He's been a voice for the new club and done that marketing role brilliantly as you'd expect from him, but he is not their hands on coach.

No thanks.

What I'll always remember from that farcical situation at the end of 2007 was Hutchy tracking down Sheedy after his "interview". I think Sheeds realised then that he didn't have the job but Hutchy asked him "What can you bring to Melbourne?" Sheeds said "They had a good coach (referring to Daniher). This place needs someone who can build a club." Six years on, we are still looking for someone to build a club. To this day I can't fathom why we went for Bailey.

Bailey could be manipulated.

Sheedy could not be. It is that simple sadly.

Yep - the club early had a plan in place and needed someone who agrees with that plan not who was necessarily the best coach. Does anyone here think Sheedy would have tanked for draft picks?

Worst decision ever made. That one is on Gardners head.

We were saying he was 'yesterdays man' back in 2007. He's since created a hard, no-nonsense list at GWS that already show more competitive fight than we ever have.

I would take Sheedy or Mark Williams (ruthless, Premiership Coaches with c**t in them) in any capacity we could get them.

Sheedy could be a $500k a year interchange bench and development coach for all I care.

It is a terrific call by Barrett.

I think its easier to start a team from scratch than turn one with some serious baggage around, especially with all of their draft concessions etc

even essendon knew sheedy was not up to it

Yes Sheedy was almost sacked late 90s because he was 'not up to it' and won the premiership in 2000. Go back further to 1992 they got beaten by 160 points and people thought well that enough, and won the premiership a year later.

Chance to get him first time fell in our lap and we missed it. now we get another chance. don't stuff it up.

We need re-badging, we need an experienced successful coach.

To those who dismiss it because of his nutty comments, tell me how well have we done getting unkown assistants to a club lacking in leadership ?

Correct. At the moment we are so bad we can't even think about putting someone in place who can win us a premiership. If we can get someone who sets cultural standards and makes us a team who is a chance to win each time we take the field it will be a success. Whether Sheedy can do that I'm not sure but I'd be looking at guys like him, Williams, Eade, Clarksom or Ratten. We need an experienced coach who knows what it's like to win a flag either as a player or head coach.

........... To this day I can't fathom why we went for Bailey.

I'm still p1ssed that we didn't get Hardwick.

And remember, if Bailey had had a half decent 1st year coaching (2008), tanking wouldn't have come into it in 2009.

We certainly could do a lot worse than Sheedy, oh wait we already have, Bailey and Neeld.

Lets just adopt clownsuits as team strip. Whole f'n place is a circus.

Again ppl falling for the messiah panacea .

The problems are deeper set. Lets fix them first.

Youd be mad to come to Melbourne until the ship is righted.

I believe we are so mired at present that further massive defeats are inevitable and this will bring things to a head.

There is no doubt that Sheedy will coach Melbourne next year. OF course it is a messiah complex, but that's often been the best practise of the top clubs. It will not happen as a one stop shop fix though. It will happen in conjunction with an AFL-guided rescue package. The package may include the following:

1. Gary Lyon no longer the part-time godfather of the club. It is not a good look for a funnyman compere of a spoof football program to wear two hats, and any new coach would always have to worry about Lyons' opinions and influence.

2. Melbourne may be asked to play a number of their home games at a new boutique stadium such as a vamped up Princes Park. This option ticks off a number of boxes: it is a beautiful ground, is a traditional home of football is served by public transport and would create the 'full house' atmosphere the club desperately needs. Playing in the cavernous MCG is doing nothing for the Dees. Melbourne should not, however give up the G, it is still our home of football and we should play at least five games there, three of which should be reasonably drawing fixtures. If we can play twice in Darwin we can play seven games at Princes Park.

3. The losses of established players have hurt the club but they are not fatal, we do have to stem the impact of free agency and the likelihood that other players will follow the well worn path of Petterd, Thompson, Moloney, Rivers, Scully, McLean etc We stand to gain potentially three elite players next year.

4. Sheedy would have an understudy who could implement match day tactics where necessary.

The Melbourne playing group have to have something to believe in and probably only someone with Sheedy's cache could do it at this stage. We all have our feelings about KS and some of them are probably justified. This time his uncompromising approach would be pushing our cause.

You make a lot of sense Bush demon but I cannot see it happening.

Too many egos on both side to climb over.

I believed at the time he was the man for us.

But it is now ancient history

  • PREVIEW: St. Kilda

The media has performed a complete reversal in its coverage of the Melbourne Football Club over the past month and a half. Having endured intense criticism from all quarters in the press, which continually identified new avenues for scrutiny of every aspect, both on and off the field, and prematurely speculated about the departures of coaches, players, officials, and various employees from a club that lost its first five matches and appeared out of finals contention, the narrative has suddenly shifted to one of unbridled optimism.  The Demons have won five of their last six matches, positioning themselves just one game (and a considerable amount of percentage) outside the top eight at the halfway mark of the season. They still trail the primary contenders and remain far from assured of a finals berth.

  • REPORT: Sydney

A few weeks ago, I visited a fellow Melbourne Football Club supporter in hospital, and our conversation inevitably shifted from his health diagnosis to the well-being of our football team. Like him, Melbourne had faced challenges in recent months, but an intervention - in his case, surgery, and in the team's case, a change in game style - had brought about much improvement.  The team's professionals had altered its game style from a pedestrian and slow-moving approach, which yielded an average of merely 60 points for five winless games, to a faster and more direct style. This shift led to three consecutive wins and a strong competitive effort in the fourth game, albeit with a tired finish against Hawthorn, a strong premiership contender.  As we discussed our team's recent health improvement, I shared my observations on the changes within the team, including the refreshed style, the introduction of new young talent, such as rising stars Caleb Windsor, Harvey Langford, and Xavier Lindsay, and the rebranding of Kozzy Pickett from a small forward to a midfield machine who can still get among the goals. I also highlighted the dominance of captain Max Gawn in the ruck and the resurgence in form in a big way of midfield superstars Christian Petracca and Clayton Oliver.

  • POSTGAME: Sydney

The Demons controlled the contest from the outset, though inaccurate kicking kept the Swans in the game until half time. But after the break, Melbourne put on the jets and blew Sydney away and the demolition job was complete.
